Chapter 8 - Saint Agnes After Midnight

Saint Agnes Hospital rose above the river like a dead city.
Its windows were broken. Ivy crawled across the brick. The main entrance had been sealed with plywood, but a side door stood open when Ethan arrived.
He had ignored Vanessa’s order to come alone.
Detective Cole and a tactical team surrounded the property from a distance. Mara came because the key required her. Gerald, barely stable, remained under guard.
Claire had regained consciousness long enough to say Noah had been taken by a woman wearing a paramedic uniform.
Dr. Cross had been dragged away separately.
Inside the hospital, Ethan smelled damp plaster and old chemicals.
Mara’s flashlight moved over faded children’s murals.
Smiling clouds.
Yellow stars.
Animals marching toward a painted sunrise.
The cheerful images made the darkness worse.
A small speaker crackled in the corridor.
“Welcome home, Mara,” Vanessa said.
Mara stopped.
Ethan raised his weapon, though there was nothing to aim at.
“Where is Noah?”
“Safe. For now.”
“Let him go.”
“Open the vault.”
Lights switched on one by one, leading toward the old maternity wing.
They followed.
The halls were filled with abandoned beds and cabinets. In one room, dozens of infant bracelets hung from the ceiling on strings.
Each bore a name.
Some were crossed out.
Some had two names written over each other.
Mara found her own.
BABY JANE DOE.
Below it, in faded ink:
TRANSFER CANCELED BY I. BELL.
She touched the bracelet but did not remove it.
At the end of the ward stood a steel door engraved with the bell symbol.
There was a slot for the brass key and a glass panel beside it.
Mara inserted the key.
The panel lit up.
PLACE HAND.
She pressed her palm against the glass.
A needle snapped from the frame and pierced her finger.
Ethan pulled her back, but the mechanism had already taken blood.
The door unlocked.
Vanessa’s voice came from inside the vault.
“Thank you.”
Ethan entered first.
The room beyond was much larger than expected. Shelves extended into darkness, filled with ledgers, film reels, tapes, birth certificates, court orders, medical files, and sealed evidence boxes.
A hidden history of stolen identities.
At the center sat Noah on a chair.
His hands were tied loosely, but he was awake.
“Daddy!”
Ethan rushed forward.
A red laser appeared on his chest.
Vanessa stepped from behind the shelves holding a pistol.
She wore black and looked calmer than she had at the dinner.
“Slowly.”
Noah began to cry.
Mara stood near the door.
“Where is Dr. Cross?”
“Useful people do not disappear. They are reassigned.”
“Where is Lily?”
Vanessa smiled at Ethan.
“Always the same question.”
Margaret Vale emerged from the shadows.
Her hands were free.
Ethan stared at his mother.
“Are you with her?”
Margaret looked at Noah.
“I am with whoever keeps him alive.”
Vanessa motioned toward the shelves.
“Find Ledger One.”
Mara searched the labels.
There were hundreds.
“What is in it?”
“The original substitutions. The true names. The bloodlines. Every family that paid to rewrite an heir.”
“And you want it destroyed?”
Vanessa laughed.
“No. I want it published.”
Ethan did not understand.
“You would expose your own crimes.”
“My crimes are small compared to theirs. Senators, judges, hospital boards, dynasties. The Vale family did not create this machine. They merely profited from it.”
Margaret spoke quietly.
“She wants chaos. Markets collapse. trusts freeze. families turn on one another.”
Vanessa’s eyes shone.
“Truth is not chaos.”
“You do not care about truth,” Mara said. “You care about revenge.”
For the first time, Vanessa’s expression cracked.
“My mother was used. Your mother ruined everything. Margaret kept the Vale name. Lily took Ethan. You walked into this house wearing a maid’s uniform and still became the one person Noah trusted.”
She aimed the pistol at Mara.
“You all stole something from me.”
Noah whispered, “You hurt me.”
Vanessa looked at him.
The laser moved.
Ethan stepped between them.
“Take me.”
“I already did. You just never noticed.”
Mara found a black ledger marked ONE.
She lifted it from the shelf.
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
“Bring it here.”
Mara opened the cover.
The first page contained a list of names.
At the top:
CELESTE ARDEN.
Below:
CHILD STATUS: FEMALE.
PLACEMENT STATUS: FAILED.
BIOLOGICAL FATHER: THOMAS VALE.
Ethan’s father.
Vanessa’s mother had been pregnant with Thomas Vale’s child.
Mara turned the page.
A photograph slipped out.
Two newborn girls lay side by side.
One was labeled Vanessa Arden.
The other was labeled Mara Bell.
The date showed they were born on the same night.
Mara stared at Vanessa.
“We are the same age.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Ethan understood before anyone spoke.
Vanessa was not Celeste’s biological daughter.
May you like
The other child was.
Mara.
