Chapter 14 - Noah’s First Name

Daniel had hidden the certificate beneath the chapel floor.

He led Ethan and Mara to a loose stone near the altar and lifted a waterproof envelope from the hollow space.

The document inside was not the birth certificate Ethan knew.

Noah Vale had been born Noah Samuel Arden.

Mother: Lily Grace Vale.

Father: blank.

Ethan read it twice.

His name was missing.

Daniel watched him carefully.

“Lily asked me to protect it.”

“Why?”

“She said if Noah’s true parentage became public too soon, Thomas would take him.”

Mara felt sick.

Ethan sat on the chapel steps.

“Noah is not my biological son.”

Daniel did not answer.

The certificate did.

Memories came apart.

Lily’s pregnancy after months of fertility treatment.

Her insistence that some medical records remain private.

Thomas’s unusual interest in the baby.

Vanessa’s arrival in their lives during the final trimester.

Ethan looked at Mara.

“Arden.”

“The surname may have been used as protection,” she said.

“Or because his father was an Arden.”

Celeste had no known sons.

But the network contained hidden identities.

Daniel gave them another letter from Lily.

Ethan opened it.

I wanted to tell you before the crash. Noah was conceived through the clinic after our final treatment failed. The embryo was labeled with our names, but I later discovered the genetic material had been replaced. I do not know who his biological father is. I registered him under Arden because Celeste’s succession protocols would protect any child carrying her verified bloodline markers. Noah tested positive.

Ethan stopped reading.

Mara understood first.

“If Noah carries Celeste’s bloodline…”

“He may be related to me.”

Daniel looked toward the chapel doors.

“Or to Vanessa, through whoever her real parents were.”

The family tree had become a weaponized maze.

Ethan folded the letter.

“He is my son.”

“Yes,” Mara said.

No hesitation.

Biology had started the nightmare, but love still named the child.

A federal call came through.

Two more red sites had been cleared. One missing child was alive under another identity. One had died ten years earlier.

At the coastal facility, agents found records referring to the Winter Child as Subject N.

N.

Noah.

The dates did not fit. The Winter Child was born in 1996.

But Subject N could mean something else.

Then Cole reported a break in the hard drive encryption.

The ISABEL archive contained an audio file recorded by Mara’s mother.

Isabel Bell spoke quickly, as if hiding.

“Celeste delivered twins during the blackout. A girl and a boy. Thomas was told the boy died. I removed the girl. The boy was taken by someone inside the hospital before I could reach him.”

Mara leaned against the chapel wall.

Celeste had twins.

Mara was the girl.

The boy remained unknown.

He would be thirty years old.

Old enough to be Noah’s biological father.

Old enough to control the Arden succession through Noah.

Daniel asked, “Who took him?”

Isabel’s recording continued.

“The boy was marked Winter because the heating failed that night. He survived six hours in the cold room. His blood type is rare. His right shoulder carries a surgical scar.”

Ethan remembered someone with such a scar.

Gerald Pike.

But Gerald was too old.

Dr. Cross’s son, Aaron, had died young.

Cole had a scar on his right shoulder from military service.

Ethan looked at the detective.

Cole’s expression did not change.

Mara noticed.

“How did you get that scar?”

“Afghanistan.”

“Show me.”

Cole did not move.

Agents nearby raised their weapons slightly.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Aaron.”

Cole’s jaw tightened.

“My adoption file is sealed.”

Mara’s voice became a whisper.

“How old are you?”

“Thirty.”

The chapel fell silent.

Cole had led the investigation from the beginning.

He had access to every witness.

Every location.

Every piece of evidence.

He could have manipulated all of it.

Or he could be another victim.

Cole slowly removed his jacket and pulled down his shirt collar.

A surgical scar crossed his right shoulder.

Before anyone could speak, the chapel windows shattered.

A sniper round struck the altar.

Cole threw Mara to the floor.

A second shot hit Daniel.

Ethan dragged him behind a stone pillar.

Outside, an engine roared away.

Cole pressed his hand against Daniel’s wound.

Daniel gasped, “Lily warned me.”

“About what?” Ethan asked.

Daniel’s eyes moved toward Cole.

“The Winter Child was never missing.”

May you like

Blood filled his mouth.

“He was trained.”
