Chapter 6 - The Grave Without a Body

Anna was taken to a protected hospital under guard.
Her blood tests revealed years of sedatives, hormone treatments, and neurological drugs. She remembered fragments but no complete history. At times she called herself Lily. At other times she screamed that Lily was buried beneath the wrong name.
Ethan returned to the city with one decision.
He would open Lily’s grave.
The court approved the exhumation within forty-eight hours, citing evidence of identity fraud and possible homicide.
The cemetery was closed to the public at sunrise.
Ethan stood beside the grave while workers lifted the coffin. Snow gathered on his shoulders. Mara waited several yards away, holding the brass key.
Noah remained with Claire.
Ethan was grateful. A child should not have to watch adults discover how thoroughly they had failed the dead.
The coffin was moved to a forensic facility.
Inside lay no body.
Only sandbags and a sealed metal box.
Ethan stared through the observation window as the examiner opened it.
The box contained Lily’s wedding ring, a lock of auburn hair, and a memory card.
The memory card held one video.
Lily sat in what appeared to be a hospital basement. Her face was bruised. Her left arm was in a sling. A clock on the wall showed the date two days after her supposed death.
She looked directly at the camera.
“Ethan, if you see this, then they failed to erase everything.”
His knees weakened.
“I survived the crash. A woman in the ambulance injected me. When I woke, Vanessa was beside me.”
Vanessa had been at the hospital with Ethan that night.
Or he had believed she was.
Lily continued.
“She said Noah would die if I tried to leave. She said the accident was not meant to kill me. It was meant to remove me.”
Mara moved closer to the screen.
Lily held up a folded document.
“Celeste Arden created something called the Continuity Program. It began as a way to control inheritance through guardianship, identity substitution, and medical fraud. Vanessa believes she is finishing her mother’s work.”
Lily glanced toward a door.
“I do not know where they will take me. I heard the name Bell. I heard them say Isabel kept the original ledger.”
Mara gripped the edge of the table.
Lily’s voice broke.
“Ethan, do not trust the people closest to you. Not the staff. Not the board. Not even your family.”
The video ended.
Ethan remained still.
His father was dead.
His mother lived in Switzerland.
Claire was with Noah.
Gerald had betrayed him.
Every direction led to someone he loved.
Detective Cole received a call.
The cybercrime unit had partially opened the ISABEL drive.
It contained payment records from the Vale Trust to shell companies owned by the Arden Foundation.
Payments began twenty-eight years ago.
They continued after Celeste’s death.
The most recent transfer had been authorized six days earlier.
By Ethan’s mother.
Margaret Vale.
Ethan called her immediately.
The line was disconnected.
He contacted her estate in Geneva.
The housekeeper said Margaret had left three weeks earlier with a man matching Gerald Pike’s description.
Mara closed her eyes.
“She is involved.”
Ethan thought of his mother holding Noah after Lily’s funeral. Her quiet disapproval when he married Vanessa. Her insistence that Vanessa was “necessary.”
“What if she was trying to protect us?”
“By funding the people hurting your son?”
He looked at her sharply.
Mara did not apologize.
The truth had become too urgent for politeness.
Cole projected the financial records onto the wall.
Each transfer included a code.
Most were strings of numbers.
The latest contained an address.
A warehouse near the river.
They arrived after dark.
The building was empty except for a single chair beneath a hanging light.
On the chair sat Gerald Pike.
His hands were tied.
His mouth was taped.
A device had been strapped to his chest.
Cole shouted for everyone to stay back.
Gerald’s eyes opened.
He shook his head violently.
A speaker crackled overhead.
Vanessa’s voice filled the warehouse.
“Ethan, you have always had a weakness for loyal men.”
A timer on Gerald’s chest began counting down from sixty.
Cole called the bomb squad.
Too far away.
Mara searched the device.
“Do not touch it,” Cole warned.
Gerald made a desperate sound behind the tape.
Ethan moved closer.
The timer reached forty-five.
On the wall behind Gerald, a projector came to life.
Margaret Vale appeared on the screen.
She was alive.
And standing beside Vanessa.

“Choose carefully, son,” Margaret said.
“The man in the chair knows where Lily is.”
