Chapter 10 - The Red Ward

Cole ordered two officers to remain with Vanessa and Margaret while the rest descended.

Ethan refused to leave Noah behind until Mara took him.

“You trust me with him?” she asked.

“With my life.”

The words carried more than gratitude. They carried apology.

Mara held Noah against her shoulder while Ethan followed Cole into the hidden level.

The staircase led to a ward preserved beneath the hospital.

Red emergency lights pulsed along the ceiling. Doors lined the corridor, each fitted with a viewing panel.

Behind the first were empty cribs.

Behind the second were medical restraints.

Behind the third were shelves of videotapes labeled with children’s names and dates.

A sound came from the far end.

Cole signaled the team forward.

They found Dr. Cross in a treatment room, pressing both hands against a wound in her thigh. A dead guard lay near the door.

“Children,” she gasped. “Three rooms down.”

Officers continued ahead.

Ethan knelt beside her.

“Where is Lily?”

Dr. Cross gripped his sleeve.

“She was here. Years ago. They moved her.”

“Where?”

“I do not know.”

“You knew she survived.”

Tears filled the doctor’s eyes.

“For three days. Then Celeste showed me footage of Noah in the hospital nursery. She said if I spoke, she would stop his breathing.”

“You let me bury an empty coffin.”

“I tried to keep your son alive.”

Ethan wanted to hate her.

But the red ward was built from choices made under threats. Every survivor carried guilt someone else had designed.

“What were they doing here?”

“Testing attachment transfer. Identity conditioning. If a child could be persuaded that another parent was familiar, guardianship cases became easier.”

The phrase New Mother Training returned to him.

Vanessa had not invented the method.

She inherited it.

Cole called from the corridor.

They found four children between the ages of two and six.

All alive.

All sedated.

Their identities were unknown.

One child had been reported dead in another state.

Another had disappeared during a custody dispute.

The Continuity Program was still operating.

Not as a relic.

As a business.

At the end of the ward, Ethan found a room arranged like his old bedroom from childhood.

Same wallpaper.

Same wooden train.

Same blue curtains.

On the wall hung photographs of him from birth to adulthood.

Someone had tracked him for his entire life.

A television turned on.

Margaret appeared in a prerecorded message.

“Ethan, if you are seeing this, then I failed to contain what your father began.”

He stood alone in the false bedroom.

“Thomas believed family legacies were too important to be left to chance. He funded doctors, lawyers, and judges who could correct inconvenient bloodlines. When he learned Celeste intended to place her child in our home, he did not stop her because of morality. He stopped her because he wanted control.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“I spent thirty years paying, threatening, bargaining, and lying to keep the program from reaching you. I became part of the machine while pretending I was dismantling it.”

She looked away from the camera.

“Lily discovered the truth after Noah’s birth. She planned to expose everything. The crash was arranged by people Thomas once paid. Vanessa took advantage of it, but she did not order it.”

Ethan stepped closer to the screen.

“Who did?”

Margaret answered as if she heard him.

“Your father.”

The video ended.

Thomas Vale had died five years before Lily’s accident.

At least publicly.

Ethan left the room and found Cole.

“My father may be alive.”

Cole did not dismiss the possibility.

Nothing was impossible anymore.

Upstairs, Vanessa sat handcuffed beside the vault. Her shoulder had been bandaged. Margaret was being prepared for transport.

Ethan confronted Vanessa.

“Where is Thomas Vale?”

She smiled weakly.

“You finally asked the right question.”

“Where?”

“He calls himself the Custodian.”

Mara stood nearby with Noah.

The child was asleep again, exhausted beyond fear.

Vanessa looked at him.

“The Custodian does not care who inherits the Vale fortune. He cares that the system survives.”

Cole leaned closer.

“Name. Location.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Lake Ashcroft.”

Gerald had mentioned an estate north of the lake.

Ethan felt the pieces align.

Then Vanessa opened her eyes and looked directly at Mara.

“But he is not waiting for Ethan.”

May you like

She nodded toward the brass key.

“He is waiting for Celeste’s daughter.”
