Chapter 13 - The Seven Names

The seven locations stretched across four states.
An abandoned convent.
A private boarding school.
A coastal psychiatric facility.
A juvenile detention center.
Two sealed foster records.
One cemetery.
Each location corresponded to a child removed from the Red Ward.
The task force divided into teams.
Mara insisted on traveling with Ethan to the nearest site, Saint Orla’s Convent, closed for twenty years but still owned by the Arden Foundation.
They found the building occupied.
Six elderly nuns lived there under a private trust. Their records listed no visitors, no government inspections, and no financial activity beyond regular Arden payments.
Sister Agnes, the oldest, recognized Mara immediately.
“Celeste’s girl.”
Mara no longer reacted to the phrase.
“We are looking for a child brought here from Saint Agnes Hospital.”
Sister Agnes led them to the chapel.
“There were three children,” she said. “One died. One was taken. One grew up here.”
“Name?”
“Daniel.”
A man in his thirties entered from the garden carrying firewood.
He had dark hair, a scar across his chin, and Ethan’s eyes.
Not similar eyes.
The same.
Ethan stared.
Daniel set down the wood.
“You must be Ethan.”
“You know me?”
“I have watched your life in newspapers.”
Mara felt the room tighten.
“Who are your parents?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“According to the first record, Margaret and Thomas Vale.”
Ethan’s pulse hammered.
Thomas had claimed Ethan was Margaret’s biological son.
The ledger had confirmed it.
Unless the ledger lied.
Sister Agnes handed them a sealed envelope.
Inside was a blood test from thirty years earlier.
Daniel was Thomas Vale’s biological son.
The maternal line was listed only as M.V.
Margaret Vale.
Ethan looked at the nun.
“Why was he removed?”
“Thomas ordered it. He believed the infant had a heart defect and would not survive. The Continuity Program replaced him with a healthy child from another ward.”
Mara turned toward Ethan.
That child had been Ethan.
Not switched before leaving the hospital.
Switched successfully.
Dr. Cross had lied.
Again.
Ethan’s identity cracked open.
He was not Margaret’s son.
He was not Thomas’s son.
He was an unknown child raised inside the Vale family.
Daniel was the biological heir.
Sister Agnes continued.
“Margaret discovered the substitution years later. She chose not to reverse it.”
Daniel looked at Ethan without hatred.
“She chose you.”
The words offered no comfort.
Ethan thought of every family portrait, every lesson from Thomas, every cold approval, every expectation attached to the Vale name.
He had spent his life fulfilling a role assigned before he could speak.
“Why did you stay here?” he asked Daniel.
“Because the people who found me said leaving would kill my brother.”
“Me.”
Daniel nodded.
“I believed them.”
Mara opened the Celeste map.
One red location had disappeared.
Saint Orla’s was complete.
Six remained.
Daniel agreed to undergo testing and enter protection. Before leaving, he gave Mara a wooden box.
“A woman brought this last winter. Auburn hair. Scar on her face.”
Lily.
Inside was a letter.
Mara read it aloud.
Daniel is not the Winter Child. The Winter Child was born during the blackout of 1996. No official record exists. Celeste believed the child could legally collapse both the Vale and Arden trusts. Thomas believes the child is dead. He is wrong.
At the bottom, Lily had written:
Mara, do not trust Ethan’s memories of the accident. They were altered.
Ethan took the letter.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel pointed to a small cassette beneath it.
They found an old player in the convent office.
The tape contained Ethan’s voice.
Younger.
Panicked.
“I saw Vanessa at the bridge before the crash. She was not in the ambulance. She was driving the second car.”
Another voice spoke.
Dr. Cross.
“Ethan, listen to me. You are confused. Vanessa came to the hospital later.”
“I saw her.”
“You hit your head.”
“I saw her.”
A sharp click.
Then Dr. Cross said, “Increase the dose.”
The recording ended.
Ethan stared at the machine.
His memory had not failed.
It had been edited.
Vanessa had been at the crash.
And Dr. Cross had helped erase it.
Mara’s phone buzzed.
A new message from an untraceable number.

You found Daniel. Good.
Now ask him why Lily gave him Noah’s original birth certificate.
