Chapter 7 - The House That Never Belonged to Daniel

Daniel stood in the rain while police officers explained that he could not enter the Bennett house.

“This is my legal residence,” he insisted.

One officer examined the ownership documents on his tablet.

“The property company has terminated your occupancy authorization.”

“My wife owns the company.”

“That appears to be correct.”

“She cannot evict me without notice.”

“That may be a civil matter. But the security system lists you as an unauthorized individual.”

Evelyn stood beneath an umbrella, surrounded by suitcases.

“Tell them you paid for this house.”

Daniel said nothing.

He had never paid the mortgage because there was no mortgage.

Claire had told him the property company covered housing as part of her employment compensation.

He had accepted the explanation.

Vanessa stared through the front windows.

“The lights are on.”

Daniel followed her gaze.

A shadow moved behind the upstairs curtain.

Someone was inside.

He told the officers.

They checked the property and found no evidence of forced entry.

The interior appeared empty.

When they left, Evelyn turned on Daniel.

“You made us look like fools.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You are her husband. How could you not know she was rich?”

“She hid it.”

“Because she never trusted you.”

The accusation cut deeply because it was true.

Daniel opened the anonymous message again.

GO TO THE HOSPITAL.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO CLAIRE REALLY IS.

He had gone.

Now he knew less than before.

Nathan had reacted to William Bennett’s death.

The stranger at the hospital had known details.

Claire’s company controlled everything.

And someone had sent Daniel a photograph from inside the house while he stood outside.

A new message arrived.

THE POLICE ARE GONE.

ENTER THROUGH THE BASEMENT.

Daniel looked toward the side of the property.

The basement door was hidden behind a hedge.

Claire rarely used it.

He remembered that the lock was older and separate from the electronic system.

Evelyn noticed his expression.

“What?”

“Take Vanessa and leave.”

“Where?”

“Your house.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“My house was collateral for the business loan you arranged.”

Daniel looked away.

“What business loan?”

“The one you said would be paid through your consulting income.”

Vanessa slowly turned toward him.

“You used Mom’s house?”

“I planned to repay it.”

“With Claire’s money?”

No one spoke.

Daniel had borrowed three hundred thousand dollars against Evelyn’s property.

Most of it had gone into an investment proposed by a man named Adrian Cross.

Adrian claimed he could turn the money into several million through private medical acquisitions.

The investment vanished within weeks.

Daniel never told his family.

He had been using Claire’s accounts to make the loan payments.

With the accounts frozen, the next payment would fail.

Evelyn’s house could be seized.

Evelyn slapped him.

The sound echoed across the driveway.

“You useless idiot.”

Daniel did not react.

He waited until his mother and sister entered a taxi.

Then he walked around the side of the house.

The basement door was unlocked.

Inside, the lights turned on automatically.

The basement smelled like dust and cedar.

Daniel descended slowly.

A laptop waited on a worktable.

Its screen displayed a video call.

A man in his late forties sat inside a dark office.

Daniel recognized him.

Adrian Cross.

“You,” Daniel whispered.

Adrian smiled.

“You finally understand how little you know.”

“You stole my investment.”

“I redirected it.”

“Give it back.”

“It was never yours.”

Daniel approached the laptop.

“Why are you watching Claire?”

“Because Claire possesses an asset far more valuable than money.”

“What asset?”

“A drive.”

Daniel remembered seeing a small black device in Claire’s jewelry safe months earlier.

He had assumed it contained work documents.

“What’s on it?”

“Records capable of destroying people who do not tolerate threats.”

“Where is Claire?”

Adrian’s smile faded.

“She escaped the hospital.”

“Escaped from who?”

“Not your concern.”

“You contacted me.”

“Because you can reach places we cannot.”

Daniel laughed.

“She froze everything. She locked me out.”

“Anger is temporary. Marriage creates habits. Weakness creates openings.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“What do you want?”

“The encrypted drive.”

“And what do I get?”

“Your money restored. Your mother’s house protected. Your access to Claire’s fortune secured.”

Daniel’s breathing slowed.

“How?”

“Bring Claire and the child to us.”

Daniel stepped back.

“You want me to kidnap my wife?”

“I want you to reunite your family.”

Daniel thought about the declined card.

The restaurant customers recording him.

The repossessed SUV.

The police refusing him entry.

Claire’s cold voice.

Now you can take the bus too.

“Where is she?” he asked.

Adrian smiled.

“We are working on that.”

A sound came from the staircase.

Daniel turned.

The basement door slammed shut.

The laptop screen went black.

A woman’s voice spoke from the darkness behind him.

“Daniel Mercer.”

He spun around.

A figure stepped into the light.

May you like

She resembled Claire, but she was older and dangerously thin.

“My name is Margaret Reed,” she said. “And you are going to help me get my daughter back.”
