Chapter 5 - The Man in the Hallway

Claire pressed the nurse call button.
Nothing happened.
Lily stirred against her chest.
Nathan removed a compact flashlight from his pocket and moved toward the door.
“Stay behind the bed.”
“Who controls the hospital backup system?”
“Facilities.”
“Could Northstar access it?”
Nathan did not answer.
He tested the door.
Locked.
The hallway remained dark beneath the doorframe.
Then footsteps approached.
Slow.
Measured.
Nathan reached beneath his jacket.
Claire had never seen him carry a weapon, but the movement told her that he did now.
The footsteps stopped outside.
Three soft knocks followed.
Nathan said nothing.
A man’s voice came through the door.
“Claire Bennett?”
She recognized the voice.
Not from recent memory.
From childhood.
Claire closed her eyes, trying to place it.
The man spoke again.
“Your father told me you would eventually open the wrong door.”
Nathan stepped away from the entrance.
“Identify yourself.”
The man laughed quietly.
“You still sound like a lawyer, Nathan.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“You’re dead.”
“Several people have found that rumor convenient.”
Claire’s heartbeat accelerated.
“Who is he?”
Nathan raised one hand, signaling her to remain silent.
The door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Then a thin object slid beneath the door.
A photograph.
Nathan waited before picking it up.
The image showed William Bennett standing beside a younger man outside the old Bennett warehouse.
The younger man wore a silver ring.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a name.
JONAH REED.
Claire remembered him.
Jonah had been William’s closest friend and Bennett Medical Logistics’ first operations director. He disappeared when Claire was thirteen.
William told everyone Jonah had stolen company money and fled the country.
Claire had believed him.
The voice outside belonged to Jonah.
“Claire,” he said, “ask Nathan why his sister was in your father’s car the night he died.”
Nathan turned toward her.
“Do not listen.”
“Was Eleanor in the car?”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Jonah continued.
“Ask him why the passenger-side airbag contained her blood.”
Claire looked at Nathan.
“Did it?”
“This man is manipulating you.”
“Did the airbag contain Eleanor’s blood?”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
The word struck harder than a shout.
Claire felt dizzy.
“You knew?”
“I learned later.”
“You told me he was alone.”
“The police report was altered.”
“By whom?”
“Your father’s enemies.”
Jonah laughed from the hallway.
“Nathan always gives half the truth when the whole truth would destroy him.”
The emergency lights suddenly activated.
Red illumination spilled beneath the door.
Nathan raised the weapon.
The lock clicked.
The door began to open.
A hospital security officer entered first with both hands visible.
Behind him stood Jonah Reed.
He was older than Claire remembered. His hair was silver at the temples, and a scar crossed his right eyebrow. On his hand was William’s ring.
Nathan aimed directly at his chest.
Jonah looked at the weapon without concern.
“You won’t shoot me in front of her.”
“Step away from Claire.”
“I came to protect her.”
“You disabled a hospital floor.”
“I disabled Northstar’s surveillance long enough to reach this room.”
Claire spoke.
“Both of you stop.”
Neither man moved.
Claire handed Lily carefully to the nurse who had entered behind Jonah. Then she pushed herself upright despite the pain in her body.
“Put the gun down, Nathan.”
“Claire—”
“Now.”
Nathan hesitated, then lowered it.
Claire looked at Jonah.
“Why do you have my father’s ring?”
“Because he gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Three hours before his car crashed.”
Nathan shook his head.
“William believed Jonah was dead.”
“No,” Jonah said. “William helped me disappear.”
Claire gripped the bedrail.
“Why?”
“Because we found out Northstar was not stealing from Bennett Medical Logistics.”
Jonah reached inside his coat slowly and removed a sealed envelope.
“They were using the company.”
“For what?”
“To move people.”
Claire stared at him.
“What people?”
“Witnesses. Informants. Children without verified records. Patients who disappeared between hospitals.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“That is enough.”
Jonah ignored him.
“Your father discovered that medical shipments were being used to conceal illegal transfers. He tried to shut the operation down.”
Claire looked at Nathan.
“And Eleanor?”
“She worked for Northstar,” Jonah said.
Nathan’s voice turned cold.
“My sister tried to expose them.”
“No. Eleanor tried to control them.”
The two men faced each other with years of hatred between them.
Claire opened the envelope.
Inside was a copy of a birth certificate.
The name printed at the top was Claire Elizabeth Reed.
Father: Jonah Michael Reed.
Mother: Margaret Bennett Reed.
Claire’s hands began to shake.
“This is fake.”
Jonah’s expression softened.
“No.”
“My father was William Bennett.”
“He raised you.”
Claire looked at the man holding William’s ring.
May you like
Jonah continued quietly.
“I am your biological father.”
