Chapter 2 - The Declined Card

At the restaurant, Daniel Mercer stared at the payment terminal as if he could force it to change.
DECLINED.
The word glowed on the small screen.
“Try it again,” Daniel said.
The server swallowed nervously. “Sir, we have tried four times.”
“Then your machine is broken.”
The restaurant manager stepped forward.
“We have tested the terminal with another card. It is functioning.”
Evelyn slammed her hand on the table.
“This is a disgrace. Do you know who my son is?”
The manager looked at Daniel, whose face had turned pale.
“No, ma’am.”
Daniel tried opening the mobile banking app again.
His password failed.
He attempted to reset it.
ACCOUNT RESTRICTED.
Vanessa checked her own phone.
“My card isn’t working either.”
Evelyn turned on her.
“Why would your card be affected?”
Vanessa’s eyes shifted toward Daniel.
The answer was simple.
For nearly a year, Daniel had been paying Vanessa’s bills from the household account. He had also added Evelyn as an authorized user on a premium credit card he claimed belonged to his consulting company.
There was no consulting company.
The card belonged to Bennett Medical Logistics.
Daniel had obtained it by lying to a junior accountant and claiming Claire had approved the request.
The spending limit was fifty thousand dollars.
Evelyn had used nearly all of it.
The manager folded his arms.
“The bill is six hundred and eighty-four dollars.”
Daniel reached into his wallet.
He had twenty-three dollars in cash.
Vanessa searched her purse and found forty.
Evelyn carried no money because she considered cash inconvenient.
The manager glanced toward the entrance, where a uniformed security guard had appeared.
Daniel called Claire again.
She did not answer.
He called twelve times.
On the thirteenth attempt, the call went directly to voicemail.
His humiliation hardened into anger.
“She planned this,” he said.
Evelyn leaned closer.
“Then make her undo it.”
“She changed the house locks too.”
“How do you know?”
Daniel showed her a notification from the smart home application.
YOUR ACCESS HAS BEEN REVOKED.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You told us the house was in your name.”
“It is.”
“Then how can she lock you out?”
Daniel did not respond.
Because he had never seen the deed.
Claire had handled the purchase before their wedding. She told him the house belonged to a property company created by her father.
Daniel had assumed that marriage made everything shared.
More importantly, he had assumed Claire was too obedient to challenge him.
The restaurant manager spoke again.
“Sir, payment must be made now.”
Daniel forced a smile.
“My wife is in the hospital. There has been a banking error.”
“Then perhaps another relative can pay.”
Evelyn pointed at the server.
“This incompetent girl has embarrassed us enough.”
The server’s face reddened.
The manager’s patience vanished.
“If payment is not made within ten minutes, we will contact the police.”
Evelyn gasped as though he had threatened royalty.
Daniel called a former coworker.
No answer.
He called an old college friend.
No answer.
He called Nathan Hale, whose number he had once seen on Claire’s desk.
Nathan answered immediately.
“Mr. Hale, this is Daniel Mercer.”
“I know.”
“There has been some kind of mistake with our accounts.”
“No mistake.”
Daniel walked away from the table and lowered his voice.
“You represent Claire?”
“I represent several entities in which Claire has an interest.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means you should obtain independent legal counsel.”
“I’m her husband.”
“Yes.”
“She can’t freeze marital assets without warning.”
Nathan paused.
“The accounts you accessed are not marital assets.”
Daniel’s mouth went dry.
“What are you talking about?”
“The funds belong to the Bennett Family Trust and its associated companies.”
“What trust?”
Nathan ignored the question.
“You should also avoid making false statements to law enforcement, financial institutions, or company employees. Several of your recent transactions are under review.”
Daniel gripped the phone.
“You’re threatening me.”
“I’m informing you.”
“My wife just gave birth. She’s emotional.”
Nathan’s tone sharpened.
“Your wife was abandoned at a hospital with a newborn child less than two hours after delivery. I suggest you avoid characterizing her as unstable.”
“Tell her to unlock the accounts.”
“No.”
“She has no right.”
“She has every right.”
Daniel heard a faint sound on Nathan’s end, followed by someone speaking urgently in the background.
Nathan’s voice changed.
“Where are you right now?”
“At a restaurant.”
“Are you with your mother and sister?”
“Yes.”
“Has anyone else contacted you about Claire?”
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Any calls, messages, or visitors?”
“No.”
“Do not go to the hospital.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You think you can keep me away from my own child?”
“This is not a request.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
The restaurant manager approached again.
“Time is up.”
Twenty minutes later, police arrived.
A young officer listened as Daniel explained that his wife had maliciously frozen their accounts during a family dispute.
The officer remained unimpressed.
“You consumed the food. The restaurant requires payment.”
Daniel called another acquaintance, who reluctantly transferred enough money to cover the bill.
By then, several customers were recording the confrontation.
Vanessa tried to hide her face.
Evelyn shouted that she would sue everyone.
When they finally left the restaurant, the temperature had dropped, and a freezing rain covered the pavement.
Daniel reached for the SUV’s door handle.
The vehicle beeped.
ACCESS DENIED.
He tried again.
The engine would not start.
A notification appeared on his phone.
LEASE TERMINATED. VEHICLE RECOVERY INITIATED.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You said this car was paid for.”
“It’s a system error.”
Headlights swept across the parking lot.
A recovery truck stopped behind the SUV.
The driver stepped out holding paperwork.
“I’m here to repossess this vehicle on behalf of Bennett Fleet Services.”
Daniel felt every eye turn toward him.
Evelyn’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Bennett?”
The name finally connected in her mind.
Bennett Medical Logistics.
Bennett Residential Holdings.
Bennett Fleet Services.
Claire Bennett.
“What exactly does your wife own?” Evelyn asked.
Daniel did not know.
Before he could answer, his phone buzzed.
The message came from an unknown number.
GO TO THE HOSPITAL.
