Chapter 12 - The Price of a Beneficiary

Mara moved between Claire and Adrian.

“Do not come closer.”

Adrian stopped.

“You have always confused guilt with loyalty.”

“I am not working for you.”

“Not anymore.”

Claire looked at Mara.

“What did you do?”

Mara kept her weapon raised.

“Years ago, I transported sealed medical containers for Northstar.”

“What was inside?”

“I was told not to ask.”

“That is not an answer.”

Mara’s face tightened.

“People.”

Claire felt sick.

“Children?”

“Sometimes.”

Adrian spoke calmly.

“Mara later discovered a conscience. Nathan found it useful.”

Claire shifted Lily’s carrier away from him.

“What do you want with my daughter?”

“Nothing harmful.”

“Every person who uses that phrase intends harm.”

Adrian smiled.

“Your father created the Bennett Trust with an unusual succession clause. If you die, controlling ownership transfers to your verified biological child.”

Claire knew the clause.

William had explained it years ago.

The rule was designed to prevent hostile acquisition if Claire died unexpectedly.

Adrian continued.

“If the child is a minor, a court-approved guardian exercises temporary control.”

“Daniel.”

“Her legal father.”

Claire understood.

The marriage.

The pregnancy.

Daniel’s financial dependence.

His family’s entitlement.

Northstar had not needed Daniel to steal the company.

They needed him to become Lily’s guardian after Claire’s death.

“You planned to kill me.”

Adrian tilted his head.

“Eventually.”

Mara fired.

The glass wall cracked but did not break.

Adrian did not flinch.

A mechanical hiss filled the room.

Gas began flowing through the ceiling vents.

Mara pulled her jacket over her mouth.

Claire covered Lily’s carrier.

Adrian’s voice came through the speaker.

“The gas will not harm the infant. It may make her sleepy.”

Claire ran to the control panel.

The screen required a code.

She entered William’s old executive sequence.

Access denied.

Mara shot the door lock.

The bullet ricocheted.

Claire searched the office.

The original distribution centers had emergency ventilation switches near fire exits.

She pulled a cabinet away from the wall.

Behind it was a red lever.

Claire pulled.

Fans roared to life.

The gas reversed through the vents.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You remember the old systems.”

“My father taught me the buildings before he taught me the company.”

The office doors unlocked during the emergency override.

Mara kicked one open.

Armed men waited in the corridor.

Gunfire erupted.

Mara returned fire while Claire crawled behind a steel desk.

Lily screamed.

Claire’s fear transformed into rage.

She opened the Covenant Protocol controls on her phone.

Every Bennett warehouse contained emergency cargo barriers designed to isolate hazardous materials.

Claire selected Zone Two.

DEPLOY BARRIERS.

Steel walls dropped from the ceiling.

Two armed men were trapped on the opposite side.

Another dove through before the barrier closed.

Mara struck him with the pistol and kicked his weapon away.

Claire ran toward the stairwell.

Adrian’s voice followed through the speakers.

“You cannot leave with her.”

Claire reached the loading floor.

A truck engine started nearby.

One of the supposedly abandoned medical transport vehicles moved toward the exit.

Its side displayed the Bennett logo.

Claire checked the vehicle identifier.

The truck had been decommissioned after William’s death.

It should not exist.

The rear doors opened.

Rows of narrow compartments lined the interior.

Not cargo shelves.

Human-sized containment units.

Claire stopped.

Mara pulled her away.

“We need to move.”

A hand struck the small window inside one compartment.

Someone was trapped inside.

Claire heard a muffled cry.

Mara grabbed her arm.

“This is what they do. They force you to choose between saving one person and protecting the larger objective.”

Claire looked down at Lily.

Then at the truck.

“How many people?”

“Claire—”

“How many?”

Mara checked the control display.

“Seven life signs.”

Claire activated the loading dock barriers.

The exit doors slammed shut.

The truck collided with them.

Its windshield shattered.

Armed men appeared on the upper walkway.

Mara cursed.

“You just trapped us with them.”

“I am not leaving seven people behind.”

Claire accessed the building’s public address system.

“This is Claire Bennett. Covenant Protocol is active. Federal emergency notifications have been transmitted. Every exit is sealed. Put down your weapons.”

Adrian laughed through the speakers.

“No federal notification was transmitted.”

Claire looked at her phone.

The system displayed an error.

EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION BLOCKED.

Adrian continued.

“You are alone.”

Then every screen in the warehouse activated.

A live image appeared.

Daniel sat tied to a chair in the blue room.

A masked figure stood behind him with a blade against his throat.

Adrian’s voice remained calm.

“Give us Lily, and Daniel lives.”

Claire stared at the man who had abandoned her.

The man whose relationship with her had begun as an assignment.

The man who had helped create the trap around her daughter.

May you like

Daniel looked into the camera.

“Claire,” he whispered, “don’t do it.”
