Chapter 11 - The Marriage Contract

The black sedan closed the distance.

Mara turned onto a narrow access road lined with warehouses.

Claire kept Daniel on the phone.

“What do you mean Lily’s birth was arranged?”

“They chose me.”

“Who chose you?”

“Northstar. Adrian. I don’t know who controls what.”

Mara glanced at Claire but said nothing.

Daniel’s voice shook.

“I met Adrian four years ago.”

Claire felt cold despite the warm air blowing through the vehicle.

“You told me you met him last year.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“He offered me a position. He said a woman named Claire Bennett would attend a hotel conference. He gave me your photograph.”

Claire remembered the conference.

Daniel had approached her at a coffee stand after pretending to mistake her order for his.

It had seemed charming.

“You were assigned to meet me.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“I wasn’t supposed to marry you. I was supposed to become someone you trusted.”

Claire swallowed.

“Why?”

“To find out what William left you.”

“And when you could not find it?”

“Adrian told me to stay close.”

The black sedan struck the rear bumper.

Mara fought for control.

Lily began crying.

Claire braced the carrier with one arm.

“Did you ever love me?” she asked.

Daniel went silent.

The silence hurt more than the answer.

Then he said, “I thought I did.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“You thought?”

“Everything became mixed together.”

“You forged my identity. You stole from my accounts.”

“I was trying to repay what I owed them.”

“Who?”

“Adrian’s people. They had my mother’s house before I ever borrowed against it. The loan documents were prepared in advance.”

Mara turned sharply between two buildings.

The sedan overshot the turn.

“We have a minute,” she said.

Claire spoke into the phone.

“Where are you?”

“In the blue room.”

“Is Margaret with you?”

“She was.”

“Where did she go?”

“I don’t know. Someone attacked the house.”

“Do you have the second drive?”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at the road ahead.

Distribution Center One appeared beyond a locked gate.

“Destroy it.”

“No.”

“Daniel.”

“It’s the only reason I’m alive.”

“They will kill you for it.”

“That’s what Jonah said.”

Claire heard a sound in the background.

A door opening.

Daniel whispered, “Someone’s here.”

The call ended.

Mara drove through the gate after Claire remotely opened it.

The warehouse had been abandoned for five years, but lights glowed inside.

Claire checked the twelve-million-dollar transfer.

Still pending.

They entered through a side loading bay.

Rows of empty shelves stretched into darkness.

A single office light burned on the second floor.

Mara removed a pistol from beneath her seat.

“You stay here.”

“No.”

“You have a newborn.”

“And every person who tells me to wait somewhere safe eventually lies to me.”

Claire carried Lily inside.

The building smelled of metal and old disinfectant.

They climbed the stairs.

The office door stood open.

Inside, a projector displayed scanned documents across the wall.

Claire’s marriage certificate.

Daniel’s employment history.

Her fertility treatment records.

Lily’s prenatal genetic screening.

A file titled MERCER INTEGRATION PLAN.

Claire opened it.

The first page was dated six months before she met Daniel.

OBJECTIVE: ESTABLISH CONTROLLED INTIMATE ACCESS TO CLAIRE BENNETT.

CANDIDATE: DANIEL MERCER.

STRENGTHS: FINANCIAL AMBITION, MATERNAL DEPENDENCY, HIGH NEED FOR STATUS.

WEAKNESSES: IMPULSIVITY, RESENTMENT, LIMITED OPERATIONAL DISCIPLINE.

Claire’s hands trembled.

The report described their first meeting, early dates, engagement timeline, and marriage.

Daniel had not merely been encouraged to meet her.

Their entire relationship had been designed.

Another section addressed pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: CREATE VERIFIED BIOLOGICAL SUCCESSOR WITH ACCESS TO BENNETT TRUST.

Claire’s vision blurred.

Mara read over her shoulder.

“They wanted Lily.”

A speaker activated above them.

“No,” said a man’s voice. “We wanted the beneficiary.”

Adrian Cross appeared behind the office’s glass wall.

He wore a dark suit and held no visible weapon.

“Claire,” he said. “You have made this unnecessarily dramatic.”

Mara aimed at him.

Adrian smiled.

“You should ask Mara who paid her before Nathan did.”

Claire turned.

Mara did not lower the pistol.

But she did not point it at Adrian either.

“Mara?”

“I can explain.”

Adrian touched a control panel.

The office doors locked.

Metal shutters descended over the windows.

Claire held Lily tighter.

Adrian looked at the child.

“Welcome home, little one.”
