Chapter 9 - the woman from the marsh)
Daniel reached Southeast Georgia Medical Center shortly after dawn.
Police met him outside the restricted wing.
Detective Alvarez arrived ten minutes later.
“She's conscious,” she said.
Daniel could barely speak.
“Is it Claire?”
“We believe so.”
Believe.
The word was unbearable.
“Can I see her?”
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“She asked us not to let you in.”
Daniel stopped.
“What?”
Alvarez's expression held sympathy.
“She is frightened.”
“Of me?”
“Of everyone.”
Daniel looked through the narrow window in the hospital door.
He could see only a curtain.
“Tell her Lily is safe.”
“We did.”
Daniel leaned against the wall.
“What happened to her?”
“A fisherman found her near a marsh access road. Dehydrated. Exhausted. No major acute injuries.”
“Where has she been for five weeks?”
“She hasn't told us.”
Daniel looked at Alvarez.
“Victoria?”
“We're looking.”
Hours passed.
Michael arrived.
Then Andrea brought Lily.
Daniel had not wanted Lily at the hospital until Claire's identity was confirmed.
But when a nurse finally entered the waiting room at eleven twenty, she looked at Daniel and nodded.
“It is her.”
Daniel sat down.
Three years of grief collapsed into one breath.
Claire was alive.
Lily heard.
She stared at him.
“Mommy?”
Daniel nodded.
His daughter ran into his arms.
“Mommy is alive?”
“Yes.”
Lily began crying.
Daniel held her and cried too.
Michael turned away, covering his face.
No one spoke for a long time.
Eventually Alvarez returned.
“Claire agreed to see Lily.”
Daniel's heart twisted.
“And me?”
“Not yet.”
He forced himself to nod.
Lily suddenly looked afraid.
Daniel crouched.
“You don't have to go in if you don't want.”
“I want Mommy.”
“Okay.”
“What if she doesn't remember me?”
Daniel's eyes filled.
“She remembers you.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she kept your picture.”
Lily held Bunny against her chest.
“Can Bunny come?”
“Yes.”
A nurse led Lily toward Claire's room.
Daniel remained in the hallway.
The door closed.
He heard nothing.
Thirty seconds.
A minute.
Then a sound reached him.
Claire sobbing.
Not quietly.
A raw, broken sound.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Michael placed one hand on his shoulder.
This time Daniel did not pull away.
Inside the room Claire whispered something.
Then Lily laughed through tears.
Daniel's knees almost failed.
For the first time in three years, mother and daughter were in the same room.
Alive.
Together.
Daniel wanted desperately to see it.
He also understood Claire had the right to choose the moment she saw him.
After nearly twenty minutes, Lily emerged.
Her cheeks were wet.
But she was smiling.
“Mommy wants you.”
Daniel looked at Alvarez.
She nodded.
He entered alone.
Claire sat upright in the hospital bed.
For one second Daniel saw the woman from his memories.
Then he saw the years between them.
Claire was thinner.
Her hair reached just below her shoulders.
Fine lines surrounded her eyes that had not been there before.
Her hands were clasped tightly on the blanket.
She stared at him.
Daniel stopped several feet away.
“Claire.”
Her mouth trembled.
“You got old.”
A broken laugh escaped him.
“So did you.”
Claire smiled for half a second.
Then both began crying.
Daniel did not approach.
He waited.
Claire looked toward the door where Lily had gone.
“She remembers my song.”
“She remembers everything that matters.”
Claire wiped her face.
“I thought you hated me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I thought you were dead.”
“They showed me papers.”
“I know.”
“They had your signature.”
“Forged.”
“I know that now.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I should have known something was wrong.”
Claire looked at him.
“How?”
“I should have demanded more after the crash. Michael did.”
“You were raising a two-year-old.”
“I married Victoria.”
Pain crossed Claire's face.
Daniel looked down.
“I am sorry.”
Claire inhaled slowly.
“She planned that.”
“I know.”
“No, Daniel. You don't.”
He looked up.
Claire's voice lowered.
“She wasn't only watching Lily.”
“What do you mean?”
“Victoria was supposed to become you.”
Daniel frowned.
Claire explained.
After Evelyn Bennett's death, Martin Bell discovered the trust contained a controlling stake in several valuable holdings.
Claire could access them only under specific conditions.
If Claire became incapacitated, Lily's guardian could eventually exercise limited voting authority.
Daniel, as Lily's father, would naturally become that guardian.
Unless Daniel remarried and granted financial power to his new spouse.
Victoria's assignment had been simple.
Get close to Daniel.
Gain his trust.
Marry him.
Then slowly take over financial administration.
Daniel felt sick.
“She asked me to add her to the family office accounts.”
Claire nodded.
“Did you?”
“No.”
A flicker of relief.
“She kept pushing.”
“That is why they needed me again.”
“What?”
Claire looked toward the window.
“Martin's plan was falling apart. Kline wanted out. Victoria couldn't control your company or Lily's trust. They needed signatures that could survive an audit.”
Daniel stared.
“Yours.”
Claire nodded.
“They moved me from Bellweather to another place. They stopped locking the doors because they thought fear would keep me there.”
“But you escaped.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Victoria made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“She brought Lily.”
Daniel's chest tightened.
Claire smiled through tears.
“I heard her upstairs.”
Lily had remembered the singing.
Claire had heard Lily too.
“That gave you a reason.”
“It gave me my brain back.”
Daniel sat slowly in the chair beside the bed.
“Where were you the last five weeks?”
Claire's expression changed.
“I was trying to finish what started all of this.”
“Rivergate.”
“Yes.”
“We found the cases.”
Claire looked sharply at him.
“You went into the tunnel?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel.”
“I know.”
“You never listen.”
For the first time, something familiar passed between them.
Daniel almost smiled.
Then Claire's face darkened.
“Those cases aren't the main evidence.”
Daniel's relief disappeared.
“What is?”
Claire looked toward the closed door.
“Martin and Kline were hiding financial records.”
“And?”
“Victoria was hiding a person.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Claire reached for the water cup.
Her hand shook.
“Someone who was supposed to be dead before I was.”
Daniel waited.
Claire whispered the name.
“Victoria's sister.”
Daniel frowned.
“Rebecca?”
Claire nodded.
Daniel remembered Victoria saying Rebecca lived in Charleston.
He had never met her.
“What does Rebecca have to do with this?”
May you like
Claire's answer changed the entire investigation.
“Rebecca is the woman whose remains they put in my car.”
