Chapter 4 - the lie claire believed)

By ten the next morning, Daniel had become a suspect in his own life.

Detective Alvarez did not accuse him directly.

She did not have to.

Claire's video had introduced a simple possibility.

Perhaps Victoria and Martin Bell had manipulated Claire.

Or perhaps Daniel was pretending to be surprised.

Daniel understood why police had to consider both.

He hated it anyway.

Alvarez asked him to come to the station.

Lily remained with Michael and his wife, Andrea.

Before Daniel left, Lily grabbed his hand.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“You won't go away?”

Daniel crouched.

“No.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Lily studied him with Claire's green eyes.

Then she hugged him.

The interrogation room at the station was deliberately ordinary.

Gray table.

Plastic chairs.

No windows.

Alvarez placed copies of three documents in front of Daniel.

“Do you recognize this signature?”

Daniel looked.

Daniel Harper.

It resembled his handwriting.

Very closely.

But something was wrong.

“The D is too narrow.”

Alvarez waited.

Daniel pointed.

“I make the first stroke wider.”

“You're saying this is forged?”

“Yes.”

“All three?”

He examined them.

“Yes.”

The documents authorized medical evaluation for Claire.

One requested temporary separation from Lily.

Another allowed Martin Bell to act on Daniel's behalf during a supposed period of family crisis.

Daniel felt ill.

“I never saw these.”

Alvarez folded her hands.

“Where were you on April eighteenth three years ago?”

Daniel thought.

“That was two days before Claire disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“I was in Atlanta.”

“For?”

“A development conference.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes. Hotel. Flights. Meetings.”

Alvarez nodded.

“We already confirmed it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why ask?”

“Because I wanted your answer before telling you.”

Daniel leaned back.

“Do you believe me?”

“I believe someone worked very hard to make Claire think you betrayed her.”

“Victoria.”

“Victoria was involved. Martin Bell was involved. We don't yet know who else.”

“What about the red house?”

“We found seventeen houses near Bellweather Lake that could reasonably be described as red.”

“Search them.”

“We need probable cause.”

“My wife may have been held there.”

“And if we can connect a specific property, we'll move quickly.”

Daniel stood.

“While we wait for paperwork, Claire could be somewhere dying.”

Alvarez's voice remained level.

“Sit down.”

Daniel stared at her.

Then sat.

She slid another photograph across the table.

Martin Bell.

Leaving Savannah International Airport two days earlier.

“When was this taken?”

“Monday.”

Daniel calculated.

Three days before Victoria fled.

“Where was he going?”

“He booked a flight to Charlotte, then disappeared from the itinerary.”

“You think he's running.”

“We think he knew something was changing.”

Daniel thought of the locked cabinet.

“Victoria was planning to leave.”

“Maybe.”

“Why keep those papers in the house?”

Alvarez leaned forward.

“That bothers me too.”

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“If Victoria was hiding a three-year conspiracy, why keep incriminating documents ten feet from your living room?”

Daniel had no answer.

“Unless,” Alvarez continued, “she needed access to them.”

“For what?”

“Or someone wanted you to find them.”

Daniel stared.

“You think the cabinet was staged?”

“I think nothing should be assumed.”

Daniel thought of Lily pointing toward it.

“Lily knew Claire's things were there.”

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“Victoria may have told her.”

“Why?”

“To trigger exactly what happened.”

Daniel's skin prickled.

“You think Victoria wanted me to open it?”

“She fought you.”

“Maybe she wanted it to look like she fought me.”

Alvarez did not answer.

Daniel felt another layer shift beneath his feet.

At noon, Michael called.

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

“What?”

“Lily remembered something.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What?”

“The red house has a horse.”

“What kind of horse?”

“Not real. She said it's on the door.”

Daniel turned toward Alvarez.

“A horse symbol.”

Alvarez was already writing.

Michael continued.

“And there's something else.”

“What?”

“Lily says Victoria took her there.”

Daniel's entire body went still.

“When?”

“Last summer.”

“That can't be right.”

“She says Victoria told you they were visiting Victoria's sister.”

Daniel remembered.

Victoria had taken Lily away for a weekend.

She said they were staying with her cousin Rebecca near Charleston.

Daniel had been working through a crisis at one of his developments.

He had barely questioned it.

“What does Lily remember?”

“A red house. A metal horse on the door. A room with green curtains.”

Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.

“And Claire?”

Michael hesitated.

“She says she heard a woman singing the song Claire used to sing.”

Daniel felt dizzy.

“Did she see her?”

“No. Victoria made her leave.”

Alvarez was already searching property databases.

Five minutes later, she turned her monitor toward Daniel.

A photograph appeared.

A two-story red house overlooking Bellweather Lake.

Green shutters.

Long porch.

And mounted above the front door was a black iron horse.

The property owner was listed as Bellweather Agricultural Holdings.

Alvarez searched the company.

Registered agent.

Martin Bell.

Daniel stood.

“That's it.”

Alvarez was already moving.

She called for a warrant team.

Daniel followed her toward the exit.

“You're not coming.”

“Claire could be there.”

“You're still connected to this investigation.”

“She's my wife.”

Alvarez stopped.

“She was your wife.”

Daniel absorbed the correction.

Alvarez's expression softened slightly.

“Let us do our job.”

Two hours later, Daniel sat in Michael's living room with Lily sleeping against his chest.

The television was off.

Nobody spoke.

At three forty-seven, Daniel's phone rang.

Alvarez.

He answered immediately.

“Did you find her?”

Silence.

Daniel stood.

“Detective?”

“We found evidence Claire was there.”

His knees weakened.

“What evidence?”

“Clothing. Medication bottles. Photographs.”

“Is she there?”

“No.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Then where?”

“We found something else.”

Alvarez hesitated.

“There is a room beneath the house.”

Daniel looked at Michael.

“What kind of room?”

“A locked room.”

Daniel's throat closed.

“And?”

“Claire wrote on the wall.”

Daniel could barely speak.

“What did she write?”

May you like

Alvarez's voice lowered.

“Daniel didn't do it.”
