Chapter 10 - the body that became claire harper)
The original crash investigation was reopened that afternoon.
Three years earlier, a burned vehicle had been recovered from a ravine following severe storms.
The license plate belonged to Claire Harper.
Her purse had been inside.
A damaged bracelet Daniel recognized as hers had been recovered near the driver's seat.
Human remains were found in the vehicle.
A private dental consultant confirmed the identity.
That consultant had worked for Dr. Edward Kline.
The remains had been cremated after examination.
Daniel had buried ashes.
Now police began asking whose ashes they really were.
Claire explained what she knew.
Victoria had a younger sister named Rebecca Lane.
Rebecca struggled financially and had spent years moving between temporary jobs.
According to Claire, Rebecca became involved with Martin Bell before Claire disappeared.
Not romantically.
Financially.
Rebecca helped move documents and create false identities.
Then she threatened to expose the scheme.
“Victoria told me Rebecca ran away,” Claire said.
“But you don't believe that.”
“No.”
“How did you learn about the crash?”
“Martin confessed part of it when he was drunk.”
Daniel stared.
“He told you they used Rebecca's body?”
“He said Victoria solved two problems with one accident.”
Daniel felt ill.
Police located old missing-person records.
Rebecca Lane had never officially been reported missing.
Victoria had told relatives Rebecca moved overseas.
Fake social media accounts continued posting photographs for almost two years.
The images were old.
Some were manipulated.
Michael sat in the hospital room while Alvarez updated them.
“If Rebecca was murdered,” he said, “Victoria isn't just part of fraud.”
Alvarez nodded.
“We are treating her disappearance as potentially connected to homicide.”
Daniel looked toward Claire.
She sat with Lily beside her.
Lily was drawing a picture of four people holding hands.
Daniel noticed there were only four.
Lily.
Claire.
Daniel.
Michael.
No Victoria.
Claire saw him looking.
“She asked if we're married.”
Daniel's face tightened.
“What did you tell her?”
“That grown-up things are complicated.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Accurate.”
Claire looked down.
Technically, Daniel's marriage to Victoria presented legal questions the moment Claire's survival was confirmed.
If Claire had never legally died, his later marriage could be invalid.
None of that mattered yet.
What mattered was safety.
Police moved Claire to a protected location after her discharge.
Daniel and Lily joined her.
For the first night, Daniel slept in a separate room.
Not because Claire asked him to.
Because neither knew what they were anymore.
Three years cannot be erased because a missing person returns.
Claire had lived through isolation, manipulation and fear.
Daniel had grieved, rebuilt his life and unknowingly married one of the people responsible.
They were not going to wake up and become the couple they had been.
But Lily adapted faster.
Children often did.
She brought Claire breakfast.
She introduced Claire to every toy she had acquired in three years.
She explained school.
She informed Claire that Daniel burned pancakes when distracted.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“You still do that?”
“I improved.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Claire laughed.
Daniel had forgotten what that sound did to a room.
For twenty minutes, they almost felt like a family.
Then Alvarez arrived.
They gathered at the kitchen table.
“We found Victoria's abandoned Mercedes.”
Daniel frowned.
“I thought it was near the interstate.”
“That was another vehicle registered under a false company. Her Mercedes was located near St. Marys.”
Claire stiffened.
“Near the cottage.”
“Yes.”
“Did she go inside?”
“No signs.”
“Then where is she?”
“We found security footage from a marina.”
Alvarez placed still images on the table.
Victoria wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.
Boarding a small motorboat.
Time stamp: yesterday morning.
“She went into the marsh,” Daniel said.
“Yes.”
Claire looked frightened.
“She knows.”
“Knows what?”
Claire stood.
“The second place.”
Daniel's pulse jumped.
“What second place?”
Claire looked at Alvarez.
“There is an old hunting cabin on one of the private marsh islands.”
“How do you know?”
“Martin took me there twice.”
Alvarez immediately began making calls.
Claire continued.
“He kept emergency records there. Things he didn't trust Kline to keep.”
“Evidence?”
“Yes.”
“Why would Victoria go there now?”
Claire stared at the photograph.
“To destroy it.”
Daniel said, “Then police can stop her.”
Claire shook her head.
“You don't understand Victoria.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She doesn't destroy things unless she's sure they can't be useful first.”
“What could be useful now?”
Claire's gaze moved toward Lily.
Daniel immediately understood.
“No.”
Claire's face drained.
“She needs leverage.”
Daniel stood.
“Lily is here.”
“Yes.”
“Protected.”
“Yes.”
Then Daniel realized something.
Victoria had spent years inside their home.
She knew Daniel's routines.
Michael's house.
Lily's school.
Doctors.
Friends.
Emergency contacts.
But Lily was physically with them.
Claire grabbed Daniel's arm.
“What about Bunny?”
Daniel frowned.
“The rabbit?”
“Where is it?”
Lily looked up from the floor.
“In my backpack.”
“Get it.”
Lily retrieved the stuffed rabbit.
Claire examined the seam.
The memory card was gone, removed by police.
But Claire felt along the rabbit's neck.
Then froze.
“What?”
She opened another small stitch.
Inside was a thin plastic tracker.
Daniel stared.
“I didn't put that there.”
Claire looked at Alvarez.
“Neither did I.”
Alvarez took it.
Her expression hardened.
Victoria had been tracking Lily.
Perhaps for months.
Police immediately scanned their vehicles and belongings.
Two more trackers were found.
One under Daniel's SUV.
Another inside Claire's recovered overnight bag from the cottage.
Victoria knew where they were.
Alvarez ordered everyone moved again.
Before they could leave, Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Alvarez signaled for him to answer on speaker.
Daniel did.
Victoria's voice filled the room.
“Hello, Daniel.”
Lily froze.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Where are you?”
Victoria ignored him.
“I assume Claire is there.”
Claire stepped closer.
“I'm here.”
Silence.
Then Victoria laughed quietly.
“You always were difficult to kill.”
Daniel felt Lily grip his hand.
Alvarez began tracing the call.
Claire said, “Rebecca wasn't.”
Victoria went silent.
Daniel watched Claire.
Claire continued.
“They know.”
Victoria's voice changed.
“You don't know anything about my sister.”
“I know enough.”
“She was going to destroy everything.”
“You mean expose you.”
“She was going to leave me with nothing.”
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
Victoria continued.
“You think you're better than me because your mother left you millions?”
“This wasn't about being better.”
“It was always about that.”
Daniel interrupted.
“What do you want?”
Victoria laughed.
“You finally learned to ask the useful question.”
“What?”
“I want what Claire took from Rivergate.”
“We don't have it.”
“Yes, you do.”
“The police have the cases.”
“Not those.”
Claire went still.
Victoria knew.
Daniel saw it.
“What did you take, Claire?”
Claire said nothing.
Victoria answered for her.
“A drive.”
Daniel turned toward Claire.
Victoria continued.
“The one thing that proves who approved Rebecca's substitution at the crash scene.”
Alvarez whispered, “Do you have it?”
Claire looked at everyone.
Then slowly nodded.
Daniel felt shock.
“Where?”
Claire looked at Lily's drawing on the table.
Then at Lily.
Victoria said softly over the phone, “If Claire wants Lily to stay safe, she'll bring it to me.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You don't get near my daughter.”
Victoria laughed.
“Daniel, I already spent three years near your daughter.”
The call ended.
Alvarez looked at Claire.
“Where is the drive?”
Claire whispered, “Somewhere Victoria will never think to look.”
Lily suddenly looked up.
“Bunny?”
Claire shook her head.
“No, sweetheart.”
May you like
Then she turned toward Daniel.
“In your wedding ring.”
