Chapter 11 - the secret inside daniel's ring)

Daniel stared at the silver wedding ring on his hand.

Not the ring Victoria had given him.

His original ring.

The one Claire placed on his finger nine years earlier.

Daniel had stopped wearing it after Claire's death.

For almost a year it remained inside a dresser drawer.

Then, on the anniversary of her disappearance, he began wearing it again on his right hand.

Victoria hated that.

They argued about it repeatedly.

Eventually Daniel moved it back to his left hand alongside his newer ring for a few months, then stopped wearing Victoria's band altogether after their marriage began deteriorating.

Now he looked at the original ring.

“How?”

Claire took his hand.

Her touch startled both of them.

She turned the ring.

“There is a hollow section.”

Daniel frowned.

“No there isn't.”

“My grandfather was a jeweler.”

She pressed a thumbnail into a nearly invisible seam.

The inner band clicked.

A tiny section opened.

Daniel stared.

Inside was a micro storage chip smaller than his fingernail.

“You put that there?”

“Five weeks ago.”

“How?”

“I followed you.”

Daniel looked at her.

Claire lowered her eyes.

“You went to Lily's school play.”

Daniel remembered that night.

He had placed his jacket over the back of a chair.

During intermission he left to help Lily backstage.

“I was in the auditorium.”

Daniel's chest tightened.

“You saw us?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you speak to me?”

“I wasn't ready.”

“You put this in my ring?”

“You had left it in the inside pocket because your finger was swollen from working on the deck.”

Daniel gave a stunned laugh.

“You remember everything.”

“I spent three years remembering everything.”

Alvarez carefully removed the chip.

“This is what Victoria wants?”

Claire nodded.

“What is on it?”

“A recording from Martin.”

“Confession?”

“Partly.”

Claire explained she had met Martin secretly six weeks earlier.

Martin knew Kline planned to eliminate him financially and perhaps physically.

Fear made him careless.

Claire recorded the conversation.

Martin admitted Rebecca's remains had been used to fake Claire's death.

He also named the county investigator who accepted money to approve the identification.

He admitted Victoria arranged Rebecca's presence in Claire's car.

Most importantly, Martin admitted Victoria caused the original crash.

Daniel's face went cold.

“She tried to kill you.”

Claire nodded.

“She cut part of the brake line.”

Daniel looked away.

The image of Claire's vehicle disappearing into rain returned.

“She expected you to die.”

“Yes.”

“But you survived.”

“A truck driver saw me crawl from the ravine before the fire. Martin's people reached the hospital before police connected me to the wreck.”

“How?”

“Kline controlled the private clinic I was taken to.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

A complete system.

Money.

Medical authority.

Legal authority.

Forged records.

A dead woman substituted for a living one.

Alvarez placed the chip in an evidence container.

“If this recording is intact, Victoria's leverage is gone.”

Claire shook her head.

“Her leverage isn't the evidence.”

“What is?”

“Fear.”

Claire knew Victoria better than Daniel wanted to admit.

They had once been friends.

Victoria had grown up close to Claire's family but without Claire's security.

Claire's mother sometimes paid Victoria's school expenses.

Invited her on vacations.

Helped with college tuition.

What Claire remembered as generosity, Victoria had experienced as humiliation.

“She kept score,” Claire said.

“Of what?” Daniel asked.

“Everything.”

Every gift.

Every compliment Claire received.

Every time someone compared them.

Every opportunity Claire had that Victoria did not.

“She didn't wake up one day and decide to steal money,” Claire said. “She spent years convincing herself my life should have been hers.”

Daniel thought about Victoria standing in Claire's kitchen.

Wearing Claire's family jewelry.

Sleeping in Claire's bedroom.

Helping raise Claire's child.

The horror became clearer.

“She didn't just want the trust.”

Claire nodded.

“She wanted replacement.”

That evening police prepared a controlled operation.

Victoria had demanded the drive.

Alvarez wanted Claire to call her.

Daniel refused.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“You don't decide.”

“I know. I'm saying it's dangerous.”

“So was living in a basement for almost two years.”

Daniel flinched.

Claire immediately regretted it.

“Daniel.”

“No. You're right.”

He sat across from her.

“I spent three years believing I failed you because you died. Now you're alive and I still feel like I failed you.”

Claire's expression softened.

“They built something designed to fool us.”

“I should have known Victoria was wrong for Lily.”

“You noticed.”

“Too late.”

“Not too late.”

Daniel looked toward the other room where Lily slept.

Claire continued.

“You opened the cabinet.”

“Because Lily told me.”

“You believed her.”

That mattered.

Victoria's entire system depended on adults dismissing what children saw.

Daniel had finally listened.

Claire called Victoria at nine fifteen.

Police traced the call.

Victoria answered.

“You found it?”

“Yes,” Claire said.

“Where?”

“Safe.”

“Bring it to the cabin.”

“Not until I know you won't disappear.”

Victoria laughed.

“You think you're negotiating?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you need the recording more than I need you.”

Silence.

Claire's hand trembled.

Daniel sat beside her.

Victoria said, “Midnight tomorrow. Marsh cabin.”

“I'm not coming alone.”

“Yes, you are.”

“No.”

Victoria's voice sharpened.

“Then I release everything I have on Daniel.”

Daniel frowned.

Claire said, “Nobody believes your forged papers anymore.”

“I'm not talking about papers.”

Daniel saw Claire's expression change.

“What are you talking about?”

Victoria laughed.

“Ask Daniel what happened at Rivergate before he canceled the project.”

Claire looked at him.

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Victoria continued.

“Ask him about the worker who disappeared.”

Daniel's stomach dropped.

There had been a worker.

Samuel Ortiz.

A survey subcontractor.

He disappeared shortly before the project collapsed.

Police assumed he left the state after stealing equipment.

Daniel had never connected it.

Victoria whispered, “Claire found Rebecca under the wrong identity.”

A pause.

“But Rebecca wasn't the only body Rivergate helped hide.”

The line went dead.

Daniel looked at Alvarez.

Alvarez's face had hardened.

May you like

The evidence beneath Lot 17 was no longer only financial.

And somewhere in the records Kline tried to bury might be proof that Rivergate had hidden more than fraud.
