Chapter 8 - The Nurse Who Vanished)

Linda Kessler was not missing.

She was hiding.

Police located her by noon through a tax record attached to a small cleaning business in western Pennsylvania.

She had changed her last name after remarrying.

Linda Avery now lived nearly four hundred miles away.

Detectives wanted to interview her before Daniel contacted her.

Daniel agreed.

Barely.

He spent the afternoon at Rachel's house with Lily and Noah.

Lily fell asleep against him while holding Mr. Hops.

Noah sat at the opposite end of the sofa.

The boy had barely spoken since the police left.

Daniel watched him.

"You hungry?"

Noah shook his head.

"Want to watch something?"

Another shake.

Daniel waited.

Finally Noah said, "Did Dad know he was going to die?"

Daniel's chest tightened.

"No."

"You said he recorded Mr. Pike."

"He knew something was wrong."

"Did Vanessa know?"

Daniel considered lying.

He could tell Noah he did not know.

He could protect him for another day.

But Noah had already spent too much time surrounded by adults who believed hiding the truth was a form of protection.

"She knew your dad was investigating Owen."

Noah looked down.

"Did she help Owen?"

"With money, yes."

"With Dad?"

"I do not know."

Noah's eyes filled.

Daniel moved closer.

"I promise you something."

"What?"

"I will not stop until I know."

Noah looked at him.

"You promise a lot."

The words hurt.

Daniel did not defend himself.

"You're right."

Noah wiped his face.

Daniel continued.

"I promised your dad I would take care of you."

Noah's mouth tightened.

"I heard Vanessa say you wanted to send me away."

Daniel went still.

"What?"

"She said you were tired of me."

"Noah."

"She said boarding school was your idea."

Daniel closed his eyes.

It had been Vanessa's idea.

He had refused.

But he had never told Noah.

He had allowed the boy to live in uncertainty because he thought adult conversations did not belong in front of children.

Vanessa had filled the silence.

"I never wanted you sent away."

Noah looked skeptical.

"Then why did she say it?"

"Because she wanted you to believe you had nobody."

Noah stared at the floor.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Look at me."

The boy did.

"You are Aaron's son."

Daniel swallowed.

"You are my family. You live with me because I want you here, not because I have to."

Noah's chin trembled.

Daniel opened his arms.

For several seconds, Noah did nothing.

Then he moved across the sofa and hugged him.

Daniel held both children.

And for the first time that day, the investigation became secondary.

He understood what Owen and Vanessa had actually stolen.

Not only money.

Certainty.

Trust.

The simple belief children should have that home is safe.

Daniel's phone rang.

Detective Collins.

He stepped into the kitchen.

"We found Linda."

"Did she talk?"

"Yes."

Daniel gripped the counter.

"And?"

"She wants immunity."

"For what?"

"Falsifying medical records."

Daniel felt his pulse change.

"Elise?"

"Yes."

He closed his eyes.

"What did she do?"

"We are still taking the statement."

"Andrea."

The detective exhaled.

"Linda says Owen Pike paid her to alter medication logs the night Elise died."

Daniel did not speak.

"Daniel?"

"Did she kill my wife?"

"No."

"Then what did she alter?"

"According to Linda, Elise received a medication that was not on the authorized chart."

"What medication?"

"I cannot discuss details until we confirm."

"Was it dangerous?"

"In the dosage given, potentially."

Daniel's hand slipped from the counter.

He sat down.

"Who gave it to her?"

"Linda says she did not."

"Who?"

"She claims she does not know."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

"There is more."

"What?"

"Linda confronted Owen after Elise's death. He paid her to change the records. She accepted."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"How much?"

"Twenty five thousand."

"For my wife's life."

"For falsifying documentation."

"Same difference."

Andrea did not argue.

Daniel asked, "Why did she meet Aaron?"

"Because Aaron found her."

"And then he died."

"Yes."

Daniel looked through the doorway at Noah.

"Does she think Owen killed him?"

"She says Owen threatened both of them at the warehouse."

Daniel stood.

"Both?"

"Linda left before Aaron died. She says Owen was furious because Aaron had recorded their conversation."

"Did Owen know where the recording was?"

"No."

That explained the two years of searching.

Owen had known evidence existed but not where Aaron hid it.

Vanessa had slowly searched Daniel's home.

Then Noah found it first.

Andrea continued.

"Linda also gave us a name."

"What name?"

"A doctor."

Daniel held his breath.

"Who?"

"Dr. Samuel Voss."

Daniel recognized it.

The fake psychiatric evaluation on the silver USB had been signed Samuel Voss.

Daniel's skin went cold.

"The same doctor they used to declare me unstable."

"We noticed."

"Where is he?"

"His clinic closed last year."

"Find him."

"We are."

Daniel ended the call.

Evelyn arrived twenty minutes later.

She carried corporate records showing Owen's fraud was larger than expected.

Over six years, nearly four million dollars had moved through shell companies.

Elise's death had occurred shortly after she began asking Daniel why company cash reserves were shrinking.

Daniel remembered.

Elise had been good with numbers.

Better than Daniel.

She had once told him Owen's reports did not make sense.

Daniel had laughed and said accountants made everything look confusing.

Two weeks later she was dead.

That memory would never leave him.

Evelyn sat at Rachel's dining table.

"There is something you need to understand."

Daniel looked at her.

"If Owen believed Elise was going to expose him, and if prosecutors can establish that connection, the entire case changes."

"Good."

"No."

Daniel frowned.

"Why no?"

"Because a desperate man facing financial crimes is dangerous. A desperate man facing murder charges is worse."

Daniel thought of Vanessa's warning.

You still think I am the person you should be afraid of.

Evelyn continued.

"Owen knows evidence is surfacing."

"Then police protect the kids."

"They are."

"He cannot get near them."

"Daniel, this is not only about physical access."

She opened her tablet.

"Carter Development received an emergency shareholder notice thirty minutes ago."

Daniel stared.

"From who?"

"Northstar Holdings."

"Northstar does not own shares."

"They claim they do."

Evelyn turned the screen.

A filing had been submitted that morning.

The deepfake authorization.

The forged documents.

Everything Vanessa and Owen had prepared.

"They filed it anyway," Daniel whispered.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Owen knows the plan is collapsing."

Daniel read the filing.

An emergency board meeting was scheduled for nine the next morning.

Agenda.

Temporary removal of Daniel Carter as CEO based on mental incapacity and violent conduct.

Attached as evidence was a video.

Daniel throwing the vase at Vanessa.

The security footage had been taken from inside his house.

Daniel stared at it.

The clip began after Vanessa attacked Noah.

The bat was not shown.

The children were not shown.

Only Daniel screaming and throwing the vase.

Evelyn said, "He is going to make you look unstable before the police case catches up."

Daniel looked at the timestamp.

The video had been uploaded thirty minutes after Vanessa fled.

"Vanessa sent it."

"Or Owen accessed the cameras."

Daniel watched himself in the clip.

Without context, he looked dangerous.

Exactly as planned.

Then Evelyn opened another attachment.

A signed statement from Vanessa Carter.

My husband Daniel has displayed increasingly violent and paranoid behavior. I fear for my safety and the safety of the children.

Daniel read it twice.

At the bottom was another statement.

Signed by Dr. Samuel Voss.

Daniel Carter represents an immediate psychological risk and should be removed from positions of financial authority pending evaluation.

Daniel looked up.

"They found Voss."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

May you like

"What?"

"This statement was signed seven minutes ago."
