Chapter 10 - Before Daniel Met Vanessa)

Daniel listened to the voicemail six times.

Each time the sentence sounded more impossible.

Vanessa knew Elise before you met her.

Daniel had met Vanessa at a charity auction eight months after Elise died.

Vanessa had approached him beside a table displaying silent auction items.

She had claimed to know Evelyn casually through a community arts foundation.

Evelyn later admitted she had met Vanessa only twice.

Daniel had never questioned it.

Grief had made memory feel unimportant.

He remembered Vanessa's kindness.

How carefully she asked about Lily.

How she never rushed him.

How she said she understood that no one could replace Elise.

At the time, Daniel had considered those words proof of maturity.

Now they sounded rehearsed.

Evelyn arrived before sunrise.

Daniel played Aaron's voicemail.

She sat silently.

Then she opened her laptop.

"What are you doing?"

"Looking at the charity auction."

"Why?"

"Because that is where you met Vanessa."

Daniel watched.

The event records were still online.

Donor lists.

Committee members.

Sponsors.

Photographs.

Vanessa appeared in three pictures.

Then Evelyn found a photograph from the previous year's event.

The year Elise was alive.

Vanessa stood near the registration table.

Daniel leaned closer.

"That cannot be right."

Evelyn enlarged the image.

There was no mistake.

Vanessa Carter, then Vanessa Cole, had attended the same event fourteen months before she supposedly met Daniel.

Another photograph showed Elise in the background.

Daniel's stomach turned.

They searched further.

Vanessa had volunteered at a nonprofit called HomeBridge Family Services.

Elise served on its fundraising committee.

Their names appeared on the same committee roster.

Daniel stared.

"They knew each other."

Evelyn continued searching.

An old newsletter appeared.

Photograph.

Elise Carter and Vanessa Cole presenting a donation check together.

Daniel stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

"She knew my wife."

Not casually.

Not distantly.

They had worked together.

Vanessa had entered Daniel's life pretending Elise was a stranger.

Why?

Evelyn found email archives through Elise's old account stored on Daniel's server.

Most were ordinary.

Committee schedules.

Donation requests.

School events.

Then one message changed everything.

From Elise to Rachel.

Subject: Something is wrong with Vanessa.

Daniel opened it.

Rachel,

I know this sounds ridiculous, but Vanessa asked me questions about Daniel's company again. She wanted to know who manages the reserve accounts and whether Daniel signs personally.

I told her I did not know.

Then she mentioned Owen Pike by name.

I never told her Owen was our accountant.

Maybe I am overthinking this.

Call me tonight.

Daniel looked up.

"Rachel never told me."

Evelyn's expression was careful.

"Ask her."

Rachel arrived fifteen minutes later.

Daniel showed her the email.

She covered her mouth.

"I forgot."

Daniel stared.

"How do you forget this?"

"Because Elise called me that night."

"What did she say?"

"She said Vanessa was strange, but then she laughed it off. She thought maybe you had mentioned Owen at a fundraiser."

"I did not know Vanessa."

"I know that now."

Daniel walked away.

Rachel continued.

"Daniel, Elise died less than two weeks later. Everything after that was chaos. I did not connect it."

"Neither did I."

They searched Elise's sent mail.

Another message.

This one was addressed directly to Vanessa.

Vanessa,

Please stop asking about Daniel's business accounts.

If your questions are related to HomeBridge, contact the foundation office.

I do not discuss family finances.

Elise

Vanessa's reply came seven minutes later.

Of course. I apologize if I crossed a line.

Daniel recognized the tone.

Polite.

Controlled.

Harmless.

The mask.

Then Evelyn found deleted mail recovered from backup.

One message from Vanessa to Owen.

No subject.

She is suspicious.

Owen replied.

Then stop talking to her.

Vanessa wrote back.

Too late.

Daniel stared at the words.

Owen's response arrived three minutes later.

I will handle it.

The room went silent.

Detective Collins received the emails immediately.

Within twenty minutes, investigators confirmed the addresses were authentic.

The evidence was still circumstantial.

But the pattern had changed.

Vanessa had not joined Owen after Elise died.

She had been involved before.

Daniel's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Vanessa.

"You found the emails."

Daniel's voice went cold.

"You knew Elise."

"Yes."

"You lied to me for four years."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Vanessa breathed slowly.

"Because Owen told me to get close to you."

Rachel closed her eyes.

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Why?"

"After Elise died, you stopped caring about the company. Owen thought you might sell."

"So he sent you."

"At first."

Daniel felt sick.

"At first?"

"I was supposed to watch you."

"You married me."

"That was not part of the original plan."

Daniel laughed once.

"You expect that to make me feel better?"

"No."

"Did you love me?"

Vanessa did not answer.

"Did you?"

"I thought I did."

Daniel looked toward Lily's room.

"You knew my wife."

"Yes."

"You knew Owen was manipulating her medical records."

"I found out later."

"How much later?"

"After we were married."

"Liar."

"I swear."

"Your emails say she was suspicious."

"Suspicious about money."

"What happened to her?"

Vanessa began crying.

Daniel had seen her cry before.

He no longer trusted tears.

"I did not kill Elise."

"Did Owen?"

"I do not know."

"You always say that."

"Because I do not."

"Did you help him cover it up?"

Silence.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Vanessa."

"Yes."

The admission was almost inaudible.

Rachel turned away.

Daniel asked, "How?"

"I deleted emails. I gave him access to her foundation records. I told him when she planned to meet Evelyn."

"You helped him."

"I did not know she would die."

"But afterward?"

"I knew something was wrong."

"And you still came to me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because by then Owen had evidence against me."

"What evidence?"

"Fraud."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You were already stealing."

"I was helping him move money."

"From me."

"Yes."

"From Noah."

"Later."

Daniel forced himself to stay calm.

"Why call me now?"

"Because Owen is going to the board meeting."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"We know."

"No, you do not understand."

"What?"

"He is not trying to win."

Daniel frowned.

"Then what is he doing?"

"Destroying the company."

"How?"

"He transferred the reserve cash overnight."

Evelyn immediately began checking accounts.

Her face changed.

Daniel's pulse jumped.

"How much?"

"Seven point three million."

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Where?"

Vanessa answered.

"That is what he wants you looking at."

"What does that mean?"

"He does not care about the money anymore."

"Then what does he want?"

Vanessa whispered.

"The hard drive Aaron buried."

"We already have it."

"I know."

"How?"

"Because one of the detectives is working for Owen."

Every person in the room froze.

Daniel looked at Andrea Collins.

Andrea immediately reached for her radio.

Vanessa continued.

"Someone told him exactly what you found."

"Who?"

"I do not know his name."

"How do you know?"

"Because Owen called me thirty minutes ago."

"What did he say?"

"He said the box was empty when he gets it."

Daniel looked at Aaron's evidence.

"Where is Owen now?"

"The board meeting."

"Why?"

"Because he knows you will go there."

Daniel suddenly understood.

"He wants me away from the children."

"No."

May you like

Vanessa's voice broke.

"He wants the police away from the children."
