Vanessa asked to speak with Daniel three days later.
He refused.
She asked again.

On the fourth day, Evelyn visited him at home.
"She says she has information about Aaron."
Daniel continued making coffee.
"She can tell police."

"Then I do not need to hear it."
Evelyn watched him.
"You might."

"She has a letter."
Daniel turned.

"Maybe."
"That means yes."

"I hate her."

"I hope she stays in jail forever."

"But do not build your whole life around what happens to Vanessa."

"Because then she still controls part of it."

"Your dad deserves to be remembered for more than how he died."

Vanessa's final statement was simple.
"I had chances to stop."
Daniel listened.
"Elise gave me one. Aaron gave me one. Daniel gave me more than I deserved. I kept choosing the next lie because admitting the previous lie seemed too expensive."

"Eventually the lies cost everything anyway."

"Yes."
