Daniel did not go to the board meeting.
Evelyn did.
Daniel stayed with Lily and Noah while police moved them from Rachel's house to a secure location.
Andrea Collins requested an internal review of every officer who had accessed the Carter evidence.
Within minutes, investigators discovered unauthorized database queries made by Detective Paul Brennan, a financial crimes officer attached to the case that morning.
Brennan had previously worked private security.
His employer before joining the department had been a company partially owned by Owen Pike.
The leak was real.
Brennan disappeared before internal affairs reached him.
Daniel understood Owen's strategy.
Chaos.
Multiple locations.
Multiple emergencies.
A board meeting threatening Daniel's company.
Millions moved overseas.
Vanessa calling from unknown locations.
All designed to spread the police thin.
But when Daniel refused to leave his children, Owen's plan changed.
At 9:17 a.m., the security alarm at Daniel's house activated.
No one should have been there.
Police responded.
The back door had been forced.
Daniel watched remotely from the secure apartment where the children had been taken.
Camera footage showed a man wearing a maintenance uniform entering Daniel's office.
He searched the desk.
The cabinets.
The bookshelf.
Then he moved upstairs.
Aaron's boxes.
The attic.
The man was looking for evidence.
Police arrived while he was still inside.
He escaped through a second floor window and disappeared through neighboring yards.
But he left something behind.
A crowbar.
Fingerprints identified Paul Brennan.
Owen had compromised a detective to retrieve Aaron's evidence.
That meant the evidence frightened him.
Evelyn called from Carter Development.
"The board meeting is over."
Daniel stood beside the apartment window.
"What happened?"
"The judge issued the injunction."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Northstar?"
"Blocked."
"The transfer?"
"Frozen."
"And me?"
"You remain CEO."
Daniel felt almost nothing.
A week earlier, saving the company would have mattered enormously.
Now it seemed small.
"What about the seven million?"
"Three banks froze the transfer. Roughly five million is recoverable. Two million moved through cryptocurrency accounts."
"We will survive."
"Yes."
"Good."
Evelyn was silent.
"Daniel."
"What?"
"Owen was not at the meeting."
Daniel turned.
"Vanessa said he would be."
"He joined remotely for ninety seconds, then disconnected."
"Where from?"
"Police are tracing."
Daniel looked toward Noah and Lily.
They sat at the table drawing.
Rachel remained with them.
"Something is still coming."
As if summoned by the sentence, every phone in the apartment sounded simultaneously.
Emergency alert.
Gas leak.
The building was being evacuated.
Daniel froze.
Rachel looked at him.
"Daniel?"
He read the message again.
Something felt wrong.
He called the building manager.
No answer.
Andrea Collins called thirty seconds later.
"Do not evacuate."
Daniel's blood chilled.
"The alert?"
"Fake."
"How?"
"Someone hacked the building notification system."
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
"They want us outside."
"Yes."
"Where are your officers?"
"Two at the lobby, one at the rear stairwell."
"Only three?"
"Additional units are coming."
Daniel crossed the room and locked the deadbolt.
He moved Lily and Noah into an interior bedroom.
Rachel followed.
Noah understood immediately.
"Owen?"
Daniel nodded.
The boy's face tightened.
Daniel knelt in front of both children.
"Listen to me. You stay with Rachel. You do exactly what she says."
Lily grabbed his hand.
"Do not go."
"I am staying right outside."
"Promise?"
Daniel looked at Noah.
Promises.
This time Daniel chose carefully.
"I promise I will do everything I can to stay with you."
Lily nodded.
Daniel closed the bedroom door.
Someone knocked on the apartment entrance.
Three slow knocks.
Daniel stopped.
Andrea remained on the phone.
"Do not open it."
"I was not planning to."
A voice came from the hallway.
"Mr. Carter, building security."
Daniel looked through the peephole.
Maintenance uniform.
Cap.
Face partly turned.
Then the man looked directly toward the peephole.
Owen Pike.
Daniel stepped backward.
His pulse thundered.
"He is here."
Andrea immediately shouted orders through her radio.
Owen knocked again.
"Daniel."
No more pretending to be security.
Daniel said nothing.
Owen continued.
"You cannot hide in there forever."
Police were moving upstairs.
Daniel could hear nothing yet.
Owen spoke calmly.
"Give me Aaron's drive."
"It is not here."
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because you have something more valuable."
Daniel looked toward the bedroom.
"No."
Owen laughed.
"Not the children."
Daniel frowned.
"Then what?"
"Vanessa."
Daniel stared at the door.
"I do not know where she is."
"She called you."
"So?"
"She told you things."
"Yes."
"Things that belong to me."
Daniel felt disgust rise.
"People do not belong to you."
"That sentence is why you always lose."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"What do you want?"
"Her location."
"I do not have it."
"Then ask her."
"Why would I?"
"Because Vanessa has the only original document that can put me in prison for Elise."
Daniel stopped breathing.
"What document?"
Owen did not answer.
Daniel stepped closer to the door.
"What did you do to Elise?"
Owen laughed softly.
"You still need someone to blame."
"Did you kill her?"
"No."
"Did you pay someone?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Ask your wife."
"Which wife?"
Silence.
Daniel understood before Owen spoke.
Owen said:
"Ask Vanessa what Elise gave her the night before she died."
Footsteps thundered in the stairwell.
Police.
Owen moved.
Daniel heard running.
Officers shouted.
A crash.
Then silence.
Andrea remained on the phone.
"Daniel, stay inside."
"What happened?"
"Stay inside."
Minutes passed.
Finally a knock came from Officer Collins herself.
Daniel opened the door after verifying her identity.
"Owen?"
"Gone."
"How?"
"Service stairwell."
Daniel cursed.
Andrea looked toward the children.
"Everyone okay?"
"Yes."
Daniel immediately called Vanessa.
The number she had used was disconnected.
He tried another.
Nothing.
Then Noah appeared from the bedroom.
He had heard enough.
"What did Mr. Pike mean?"
Daniel looked at him.
Noah continued.
"What did Lily's mom give Vanessa?"
Daniel had no answer.
Rachel did.
"A necklace."
Everyone turned toward her.
Rachel looked pale.
Daniel stared.
"What?"
"Elise gave Vanessa a necklace."
"How do you know?"
"Because I was there."
Daniel felt anger rise.
"Rachel."
"I did not understand."
"Stop saying that."
Rachel nodded.
"You're right."
She sat down.
"The night before Elise went to the hospital, we were at the HomeBridge fundraiser office. Elise confronted Vanessa."
"About Owen?"
"About the accounts."
Daniel waited.
Rachel continued.
"Elise had copied something onto a memory card. She said she was going to Evelyn the next morning."
"Why give it to Vanessa?"
"She did not."
Rachel swallowed.
"Vanessa took it."
"How?"
"They argued. Elise's necklace broke. Vanessa picked it up from the floor."
Daniel stared.
"What kind of necklace?"
"A silver locket."
Daniel knew it.
Elise had worn it for years.
After her death, Daniel searched everywhere for it.
He assumed it had been lost at the hospital.
