Chapter 8 - the warehouse beside the river)

Rain had started by the time Mark arrived at Riverside warehouse twelve.

It was the same river that had nearly killed him.

That was not coincidence.

Tony wanted theater.

He wanted Mark frightened.

He wanted him remembering cold water and shattered glass.

Henry hated the plan.

So did the police negotiator who had joined them by secure call.

But Brooke was inside, and Tony had stopped responding after confirming the exchange.

Mark carried the original hard drive in a small black pouch.

Copies already existed in three locations.

Tony did not know.

A medical transport van dropped Mark two blocks away.

From there, he rolled toward the warehouse alone.

At least visibly.

Henry's team remained out of sight.

Mark reached the side entrance.

It opened before he touched it.

Tony stood inside.

"Welcome back to the river."

Mark looked past him.

"Brooke."

"Inside."

"Show me."

Tony stepped aside.

The warehouse smelled of rust and wet concrete.

Brooke sat on a chair near the center of the space.

Her hands were bound in front of her.

She looked frightened but unharmed.

Mark felt relief.

Tony closed the door.

"Drive."

"Brooke first."

Tony laughed.

"Still negotiating."

"Always."

"You know what I admire about you?"

"Nothing."

"Even broken, you still sound rich."

Mark looked at him.

"And you still sound like someone explaining himself to a man he claims to have beaten."

Tony's smile vanished.

Good.

Anger made people careless.

Brooke called, "Mark, don't give him anything."

Tony turned.

"Quiet."

Mark rolled forward.

"Don't touch her."

Tony faced him again.

"You know, Clara said you'd come."

Mark's jaw tightened.

"Where is she?"

"Who knows?"

"You were using her."

"Of course."

Tony said it casually.

"She was perfect. Angry enough to betray you. Proud enough to think every bad decision was her own idea."

Brooke stared at him.

"You caused Mark's crash."

Tony smiled.

"Did Clara tell you that?"

"She told us enough."

Tony walked around the wheelchair.

"Your wife wanted control. I gave her a path."

"You sabotaged my car."

Tony leaned closer.

"I made sure you stopped driving it."

Mark held his gaze.

"You almost killed me."

"That would have been inconvenient."

"Why?"

"Because dead men create investigations. Injured men create paperwork."

Brooke closed her eyes.

Mark had expected cruelty.

The efficiency of Tony's answer still chilled him.

"You needed my signature."

"I needed your weakness."

Tony tapped the wheelchair handle.

"This did more for me than any signature."

Mark's hand tightened.

"Then why are you still here?"

Tony's expression darkened.

"Because your father stole something from mine."

"The evidence says your father was stealing."

"My father built the network."

"And destroyed everyone around him."

"He gave people opportunities."

"He turned them into criminals."

Tony's eyes sharpened.

"You sound like Daniel."

"Thank you."

Tony struck Mark across the face.

The wheelchair rocked.

Brooke screamed.

Mark tasted blood again.

He remained upright.

Tony held out his hand.

"Drive."

Mark raised the pouch.

"Release her."

Tony pulled a knife.

Brooke froze.

Mark's pulse jumped.

Tony did not move toward her.

He pressed the blade against the plastic tie around her wrists.

"One trade."

Mark tossed the pouch across the floor.

Tony picked it up.

He cut Brooke's restraints.

"Go."

Brooke stood.

She ran toward Mark.

Tony moved toward the rear exit.

Brooke grabbed the wheelchair handles.

"Are you okay?"

"Push me toward the door."

Tony stopped.

He had plugged the hard drive into a laptop on a workbench.

His face changed.

"Password."

Mark looked back.

"Daniel."

Tony typed.

Wrong.

"What's the password?"

"Richard."

Tony tried.

Wrong.

Mark smiled.

Tony slammed the laptop shut.

"You think this is funny?"

"No."

"Give me the password."

"Let us leave."

Tony raised the knife.

Then another voice came from the shadows.

"I wouldn't."

Henry stepped into view.

Tony spun.

Two members of the security team appeared from opposite sides.

Tony grabbed Brooke.

But she had been waiting for it.

She dropped low and drove her shoulder backward.

Tony lost his balance.

Mark shoved the wheelchair forward, striking Tony's knee.

The knife clattered away.

Security moved in.

Within seconds Tony was pinned against the concrete.

No triumphant speech.

No dramatic revenge.

Just a frightened man realizing that control had disappeared.

Henry came to Mark.

"You all right?"

"Ask me tomorrow."

Brooke knelt beside him.

She was crying.

Mark touched her hand.

"It's over."

Tony laughed from the floor.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

He turned his face toward Mark.

"You still don't understand Clara."

Mark said nothing.

Tony smiled through a split lip.

"Ask her why she came to the boardroom."

"Because you had Brooke."

"Eventually."

Mark's stomach tightened.

Tony continued.

"But she arrived before I took Brooke."

Henry's expression changed.

Tony laughed again.

"She chose me before I gave her a reason."

Mark wanted to dismiss it.

Tony was cornered.

Cornered men lied.

Then Mark remembered the timing.

Clara appeared in the boardroom minutes before they discovered Brooke missing.

Could Tony have taken Brooke earlier?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Mark looked at Henry.

Henry looked troubled.

Tony saw their doubt.

"Ask her."

Mark felt exhaustion settle over him.

He had survived the crash.

The manipulation.

The attempted corporate theft.

Now Tony was offering one last poison.

A question.

As security led him away from the main floor of the warehouse, Tony called back.

"Ask Clara who actually signed the proxy."
