Chapter 4 - the wife who kept evidence)

Clara was sitting alone in the formal dining room when Mark returned upstairs.

Vanessa had moved to the living room.

Tony was nowhere visible.

That immediately concerned Mark.

"Where is Tony?"

Clara looked at him.

"He left."

Henry checked the foyer.

The front door was closed.

Tony's shoes were no longer near the entrance.

Brooke looked out the window.

"His car is still here."

Henry's expression tightened.

"He didn't leave."

Mark looked toward the upper floor.

The mansion had thirty-two rooms.

Too many hiding places.

Henry called the security office.

"Lock exterior doors under trust authority. Nobody exits until we determine whether property has been removed."

Clara stood.

"You can't imprison us."

"The doors will release instantly in an emergency. And you're free to request law enforcement. I encourage it."

Again, Clara did not call.

Mark watched her.

"We saw the videos."

Her face showed nothing.

"Which videos?"

"The ones you kept."

That landed.

Clara's eyes shifted toward Brooke.

"You gave him the card."

Brooke nodded.

Clara laughed once.

"I should have known."

"You should have told me."

"You wouldn't understand."

"Try me."

Clara looked toward Henry.

"Not with him here."

"Henry stays."

"Then I have nothing to say."

Mark began turning his wheelchair away.

Clara snapped.

"Tony caused the accident."

Mark stopped.

Brooke inhaled sharply.

Henry said nothing.

Mark slowly faced her again.

"Go on."

Clara's composure cracked for the first time.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."

Mark heard the sentence as if from far away.

"What was supposed to happen?"

Clara hesitated.

"I wanted leverage."

"Leverage."

"Against you."

"For what?"

"The company."

Mark stared at her.

She took a breath.

"When we married, you promised we would build something together."

"We did."

"No. You built. I attended dinners."

"You had your own design firm."

"A firm everyone treated like a hobby because I married Mark Bennett."

"So your answer was to steal my company?"

"I wanted a seat at the table."

"You had one."

"I had the seat you gave me."

Her voice was rising.

"I wanted something that could not disappear if you stopped loving me."

Mark almost smiled at the cruelty of that sentence.

"You were afraid I might stop loving you, so you created a plan guaranteed to make it happen."

Clara looked away.

"Tony told me the board was already discussing replacing you."

"They weren't."

"I know that now."

"When did you know?"

"After the crash."

Mark's fingers tightened around the wheelchair.

"And you stayed with him."

"Because I needed to know what he had done."

Brooke stared at her.

"So you slept with him to investigate him?"

Clara's eyes flashed.

"Don't simplify this."

Brooke laughed bitterly.

"You're asking for a lot of complexity from people you lied to."

Mark kept his voice controlled.

"Why save the videos?"

"Insurance."

"Against Tony?"

"Against everyone."

There she was.

The Clara he had slowly learned existed beneath the elegant dresses and careful smiles.

She trusted nobody because she believed everyone eventually became an enemy.

Clara continued.

"Tony told me Mark would lose control of the car, maybe hit a barrier, maybe suffer minor injuries. He said the car would still be safe enough."

Henry interrupted.

"Do not speculate about the mechanics."

Clara looked irritated.

"I'm telling you what he said."

"Then continue with what you personally know."

She nodded.

"After the crash, Tony became different. He wasn't worried. He was excited."

Mark felt nauseated.

Clara spoke more quietly.

"He visited me at the hospital cafeteria while you were unconscious. He asked where your trust documents were. He wanted your signature authority."

"And you gave him access."

"I gave him copies."

"You gave him my life while I was unconscious."

"I thought I could control him."

Mark closed his eyes.

That sentence explained their entire marriage.

Clara always believed she could control the consequences of bad decisions.

"What about my medication?"

She said nothing.

"Clara."

"I changed it."

Brooke's face went white.

Mark felt Henry move beside him.

"What did you change?"

"I switched some of your bottles."

"Why?"

"Tony said you were asking too many questions."

Mark stared at her.

"He wanted you confused."

"And you helped him."

"I was afraid."

Mark's voice hardened.

"So was I."

Clara flinched.

"You don't know what Tony is capable of."

"No. Apparently my wife made sure I didn't."

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

Mark felt no satisfaction.

Once, seeing her cry would have destroyed him.

Now he only wondered whether the tears were for him or for the collapsing future she had planned.

Brooke asked, "Why keep the memory card in your closet?"

"Because Tony searched my phone."

"So you copied everything."

Clara nodded.

"I thought if he ever turned against me, I'd have proof."

Mark looked toward the stairs.

"Where is he now?"

Clara's expression changed.

"He's looking for something."

Henry immediately understood.

"What?"

"The original trust certificate."

Mark frowned.

"The certificate is in the bank vault."

Clara shook her head.

"Not that one."

Henry went still.

Mark saw it.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Henry looked toward the basement.

"Your father kept a controlling share certificate in the house."

Mark stared.

"Why?"

"As a failsafe."

"Where?"

Henry hesitated.

"The archive."

Mark's pulse increased.

They had left the basement unlocked.

Tony had never left.

He had gone down.

Henry ran.

Brooke followed.

Mark cursed his useless legs and pushed the wheelchair after them.

Clara remained standing for only a moment.

Then she followed too.

They reached the basement corridor.

The archive door was open.

Henry had locked it.

Someone had overridden the electronic system.

Inside, file drawers hung open.

Documents covered the floor.

The safe stood untouched.

Mark rolled farther inside.

"Tony!"

No answer.

Brooke pointed toward the rear wall.

A narrow service door stood open.

Henry swore.

"What is that?"

"Old utility tunnel."

Clara looked horrified.

"Where does it go?"

Henry turned toward her.

"Garage."

They raced back toward the stairs.

Before they reached the top, an engine roared above them.

Tony's Porsche.

By the time Henry reached the garage, the silver car was already disappearing through the gate.

On the marble floor near the archive doorway lay an empty envelope.

Henry picked it up.

His face changed.

Mark read the label.

Bennett Urban Development

Original Beneficial Control Certificate

Brooke whispered, "He got it."

Henry shook his head.

"The certificate alone cannot transfer control."

Clara looked toward the open garage.

"Tony doesn't want to transfer it."

Mark turned.

"Then why steal it?"

May you like

Clara stared at the empty driveway.

"Because he already has the forged documents."
