Chapter 7 - what their father left behind)

Vanessa was no longer arrogant.

She looked twenty years older than she had an hour earlier.

Mark faced her.

"Start talking."

Vanessa sat.

"Tony knew our father."

Clara was still downtown.

Brooke was missing.

There was no time for careful family history.

Henry contacted private security and law enforcement regarding Brooke's possible abduction while Mark listened.

Vanessa spoke quickly.

"Tony's father worked with ours."

"Name."

"Leon Russo."

Henry stopped typing.

Mark noticed.

"You know that name too?"

Henry nodded slowly.

"Leon Russo was one of the shell contractors Richard Hayes used."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The past was becoming crowded.

Mark said, "Tony isn't a real estate consultant."

"He is now. Sort of."

"What was he before?"

"Whatever made money."

Henry asked, "Did Richard introduce Clara to Mark intentionally?"

Vanessa looked ashamed.

"Yes."

Mark felt no new pain.

There was no room left for it.

"Did Clara know?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Dad asked me to take her to the museum fundraiser. He told me Mark would be there. Clara thought it was random."

Mark believed her.

Not because Vanessa was trustworthy.

Because Clara's reaction had been too raw.

Vanessa continued.

"Dad always said Daniel Bennett destroyed our family. After he died, Tony contacted me. He said our fathers had unfinished business."

"What business?"

"The second safe."

Henry sat.

That answer frightened him.

Mark had never seen Henry frightened.

"What is in it?" Vanessa asked.

Mark looked at Henry.

Henry said, "Something Daniel believed was more dangerous than money."

Mark knew the safe existed.

He had never opened it.

The instructions were strange.

Only open if three conditions occurred together.

A Bennett beneficiary was incapacitated.

A dispute over corporate control had begun.

And Article Eleven was activated.

All three had now happened.

Mark had once asked his father why.

Daniel answered with another irritating riddle.

"Because some truths are safe only when everyone has already started lying."

Mark looked at Henry.

"We open it."

Henry hesitated.

"Tony wants us to."

"Which means he's afraid of what is inside."

"Or needs what's inside."

"Either way, Brooke is missing."

Henry nodded.

They entered the basement.

Vanessa came with them.

At the rear of the archive was an old wine cabinet.

Henry removed three shelves.

Behind them was a steel panel.

Mark placed his thumb on the biometric reader.

Nothing.

Henry entered a code.

Nothing.

Mark remembered his father's instructions.

Three conditions.

He raised his smartwatch.

The red icon remained active.

He touched it to a concealed sensor.

The safe unlocked.

Inside were no jewels.

No cash.

No share certificates.

Only four thick binders.

A hard drive.

And a letter.

Mark opened the letter.

Son,

If you are reading this, then the protections failed before they succeeded.

That means someone close enough to hurt you has attempted to use your weakness to take control of the company.

Do not begin with the money.

Begin with the names.

Mark opened the first binder.

A list of contractors.

Payments.

Dates.

Richard Hayes appeared repeatedly.

Leon Russo appeared even more.

But next to many transactions was a third name.

Anthony Russo.

Tony.

The dates were impossible.

Tony would have been eighteen.

Henry read over Mark's shoulder.

"He started young."

Vanessa whispered, "Dad told me Tony helped with bookkeeping."

The second binder contained correspondence.

Richard begging Daniel not to prosecute.

Leon threatening litigation.

Tony sending messages to Mark's father years later.

The final letter from Tony was dated nine years ago.

You took everything from our families.

One day your son will understand what that costs.

Mark stared at the page.

"This wasn't about Clara."

Henry shook his head.

"She was access."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Mark opened the third binder.

It contained evidence Daniel had discovered after Richard returned the stolen money.

Richard had not been the architect of the scheme.

Leon Russo had.

Richard had been recruited, manipulated and eventually left holding most of the blame.

Daniel had chosen not to prosecute because Richard cooperated.

But Leon disappeared before authorities could build a larger case.

The final binder contained one shocking document.

A cooperation agreement.

Signed by Richard Hayes.

Vanessa stared.

"Dad helped Daniel?"

Henry nodded.

"It appears so."

Everything Vanessa believed about her father was wrong.

Richard did not die hating Daniel Bennett.

He died helping him.

At the bottom of the binder was a handwritten note.

Leon believes Richard betrayed him.

If anything happens to Richard, preserve this.

Vanessa backed away.

"Dad died in a boating accident."

Mark looked at Henry.

Henry said nothing.

Vanessa's face collapsed.

"No."

Mark continued through the files.

There was no proof Leon caused Richard's death.

Only suspicions.

But Tony had clearly inherited his father's resentment.

The hard drive contained financial records tracing millions through shell companies over two decades.

Enough to expose a network of fraud.

Maybe that was what Tony wanted.

Not the certificate.

Not the company.

The evidence.

Mark understood.

"He wants the drive."

Henry nodded.

"And he took Brooke because he knew Clara would force you to open the safe."

Vanessa began crying.

"This is my fault."

Mark looked at her.

"No."

She stared at him.

"Don't forgive me."

"I didn't."

Vanessa flinched.

Mark continued.

"But Tony chose what Tony did."

Henry copied the drive to a secure server.

Then another.

Then he uploaded an encrypted copy to outside counsel.

"Now the original is worthless as leverage."

Mark looked at the drive.

"Not if Tony doesn't know that."

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Henry activated recording.

Mark answered.

Tony's voice.

"Did you open it?"

"Yes."

"Good."

"Where is Brooke?"

"Safe."

"Let me hear her."

A pause.

Then Brooke's voice.

"Mark?"

She sounded terrified but alive.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Brooke, listen to me."

Tony interrupted.

"That's enough."

"Where are you?"

Tony laughed.

"You think I'm going to tell you?"

"No."

Mark looked at Vanessa.

"But I think Vanessa already knows."

Tony stopped laughing.

Vanessa stared at Mark.

He continued.

"Your father and hers worked together for years. You didn't choose some random place to hide."

Silence.

Then Tony said, "Bring the drive to Riverside warehouse twelve."

Vanessa's face changed.

She knew it.

Mark covered the phone.

"Where?"

She whispered, "Our father used to store construction equipment there."

Tony said, "One hour. You come alone."

Mark looked down at his wheelchair.

"You know I can't."

"You'll figure it out."

The call ended.

Henry immediately said, "You are not going."

"Yes, I am."

"You cannot walk."

"I don't need to."

"Tony may be armed."

"Then we're not going alone."

"He specifically said alone."

Mark looked at the hard drive.

"No. He said he wants me to think I'm alone."

Henry understood.

Mark had spent six months feeling powerless.

May you like

Tony had built his entire strategy around that weakness.

Now Mark intended to use it.
