Chapter 7 - the file beneath the altar

Ethan ordered the ballroom sealed until the hotel security team completed a search.

The guests were asked to leave through the main entrance after providing their names and contact information. Phones containing recordings were not confiscated, but the police requested copies.

Within an hour, images of Claire holding Noah had spread across social media.

The wedding of the year had become the scandal of the decade.

Claire did not care about the headlines.

She cared about the phone recovered from the black car.

She cared about the message saying someone had intended to take Noah.

And she cared about the fact that Bianca knew his name.

The police separated Bianca and Celeste for questioning.

Ethan remained beside Claire as investigators searched the service corridors.

“You don’t need to stay,” Claire said.

“Yes, I do.”

“Noah and I have survived without you.”

“I’m not staying because I think you need me.”

“Then why?”

“Because leaving again would be the easiest thing I could do.”

Claire studied him.

He looked toward the ballroom.

“This ceremony is over.”

“It ended the moment I entered.”

“No. It ended months ago. I just didn’t know it.”

A security officer called Ethan’s name.

They followed him to the altar.

The white flowers had begun to wilt beneath the heat of the chandeliers. Bianca’s bouquet still lay near the steps.

The officer lifted the velvet cushion that had held the rings.

Beneath it was a narrow envelope.

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a small key and a handwritten note.

When the child arrives, open Box 117.

Claire recognized the handwriting.

It matched the message written on the back of Malcolm Vale’s photograph.

Your child changes everything.

Ethan read both notes side by side.

“This is my father’s handwriting.”

“You’re certain?”

“I worked beside him for twelve years.”

Dr. Holloway joined them.

“What does Box 117 refer to?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire looked at the envelope.

“How did it get beneath the altar?”

The security officer checked his report.

“The wedding planner prepared the cushion at six this morning. She says it was empty.”

“Who entered the ballroom after that?” Ethan asked.

“More than forty employees.”

“Check every camera.”

“We already have.”

“And?”

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“There is a twelve-minute gap.”

Dr. Holloway sighed.

“Another deleted recording.”

“Not deleted,” the officer said. “The cameras continued operating, but all twelve minutes show an empty ballroom.”

Claire understood.

“Someone replaced the footage.”

“Yes.”

Ethan examined the key.

The number 117 was engraved along one side.

He called his attorney and asked him to search for safe-deposit boxes, storage units and private vaults connected to Malcolm Vale.

While they waited, Claire sat in the front row with Noah.

Ethan remained standing several feet away.

“You can sit,” Claire said.

“I wasn’t sure you wanted me near you.”

“I don’t know what I want.”

“That’s fair.”

He sat at the opposite end of the row.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Ethan removed his phone.

“I need you to hear something.”

He played Claire’s old voicemail.

Her breathing filled the space between them.

Then came the sound of the hospital door locking.

Bianca’s voice followed.

This ends tonight.

Claire closed her eyes.

“I thought that message was lost.”

“It arrived while my phone was in corporate security. I didn’t receive it until four days later.”

“Why didn’t you take it to the police?”

“I tried. Bianca said the voice could not be identified and that you had entered the hospital voluntarily.”

“You believed her again.”

“No. But I had no location, no hospital record and no way to find you.”

“You could have asked Dr. Holloway.”

“I didn’t know she existed.”

Claire looked at him.

“Bianca built an entire version of my disappearance for you.”

“And one for you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“The trust.”

Ethan shook his head.

“The voting shares do not transfer simply because I have a child. The child must be legally recognized.”

“Bianca wanted me to sign a statement denying you were Noah’s father.”

“That would have protected the existing board structure.”

“Who benefits from that?”

“Celeste controls twenty-four percent of the voting shares through Moretti Holdings. If the child trust activates, her influence is reduced.”

“So she ordered Bianca to remove me?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire remembered Celeste’s warning.

You still don’t understand why you were chosen.

“What did your father know about me?”

“Nothing, as far as I knew.”

“My name was added to the foundation’s private system before we met.”

Ethan turned sharply.

“What?”

Dr. Holloway opened the medical file.

“We found an archived profile created under Claire’s name four years ago.”

Claire had learned about it only the previous night.

“What was in the profile?” Ethan asked.

“Her education, employment history, blood type and family background.”

“That sounds like an investigation.”

“It was marked as a candidate assessment.”

“Candidate for what?”

“The category was hidden.”

Ethan looked at Claire.

They had met three years earlier at a foundation event.

Claire had believed it was accidental.

Perhaps it had not been.

Ethan’s phone rang.

His attorney spoke for less than a minute.

Ethan ended the call and looked at the key.

“Box 117 is located inside a private Vale family vault beneath our old headquarters.”

Claire stood.

“When can we open it?”

“We can’t.”

“Why?”

“The building was closed after my father’s death.”

“That doesn’t stop us.”

“It might.”

“What are you not saying?”

Ethan turned the key over.

“The vault was sealed because the night before my father’s plane disappeared, someone was found dead inside it.”

Before Claire could respond, a hotel employee ran into the ballroom.

“Mr. Vale, there is a fire in the parking garage.”

Ethan looked toward the windows.

Black smoke rose beyond the glass.

The employee continued.

“It started beneath Dr. Holloway’s car.”

May you like

Dr. Holloway’s face went pale.

“The original hospital file is inside that car.”
