Chapter 3 - six months earlier

Claire discovered she was pregnant on a rainy Thursday morning.

She took the test in the bathroom of Ethan’s apartment while he was preparing for an emergency flight to Chicago.

They had been together for nearly two years, although few people knew the full truth of their relationship.

Ethan’s family called Claire his communications consultant.

The business press called her the quiet strategist behind the Vale Foundation’s successful public campaigns.

Bianca called her temporary.

Claire had never forgotten the first time Bianca said it.

They had been standing at a charity gala while Ethan spoke with investors across the room.

Bianca had smiled into her champagne.

“Men like Ethan build futures with women like me.”

Claire had refused to react.

Bianca continued.

“Women like you help them survive difficult years.”

At the time, Claire had thought Bianca was merely jealous.

She had not understood how far Bianca was prepared to go to turn those words into reality.

On the morning Claire learned about the baby, Ethan rushed through the apartment searching for his passport.

“I’ll be back tomorrow night,” he promised.

“We need to talk before you leave.”

He stopped when he saw her expression.

“What happened?”

Claire held the test behind her back.

She wanted to tell him directly. She wanted to watch the surprise on his face and know whether it was joy or fear.

His phone rang.

The screen displayed the name of his uncle, Robert Vale.

Ethan rejected the call.

“Tell me.”

Claire opened her mouth.

A loud knock came from the front door.

Bianca entered before Ethan could answer it.

She carried a folder marked confidential.

“The board called an emergency meeting,” she said. “Someone leaked the details of the Atlas merger.”

Ethan’s attention shifted immediately.

“That’s impossible.”

“The leak included your private negotiation notes.”

Claire lowered the pregnancy test.

Ethan looked back at her.

“Give me five minutes.”

Bianca glanced at Claire’s hand.

For a fraction of a second, her expression changed.

Then she smiled.

“You should go, Ethan. The plane is waiting.”

He kissed Claire’s forehead.

“Tomorrow night. I promise.”

It was the last promise he made to her before everything collapsed.

Ethan did not return the next night.

The merger crisis kept him away for almost two weeks. During that time, he called Claire whenever he could, but every conversation was interrupted by lawyers, board members or Bianca.

Claire tried to tell him three times.

Each attempt ended before she could say the words.

Finally, she sent him a message.

I need you to call me when you are alone. I’m pregnant.

The message showed as delivered.

No reply came.

An hour later, Bianca called.

“Ethan asked me to handle your situation.”

Claire sat upright.

“What situation?”

“The pregnancy.”

Claire felt cold.

“He told you?”

“He has an entire company depending on him. He doesn’t have time for emotional scenes.”

“I want to speak to Ethan.”

“He doesn’t want to speak to you.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Then check your email.”

A message arrived while Bianca was still on the phone.

It came from Ethan’s private account.

Claire,

This was not part of the life we discussed. I cannot be involved. My attorney will contact you regarding financial arrangements. Do not come to the office or contact my family.

Ethan

Claire read it twice.

The words did not sound like him.

There was no greeting he would use, no apology, no explanation.

“You wrote this,” Claire said.

Bianca laughed quietly.

“People always accuse the messenger when they dislike the message.”

“I’m calling him.”

“You can try.”

Claire did.

The call went directly to voicemail.

She tried again.

Then again.

By nightfall, her number had been blocked.

What Claire did not know was that Ethan’s phone had been taken by corporate security after the Atlas leak. Bianca had claimed his private accounts were compromised and needed to be protected.

She controlled every call that reached him.

She also controlled the temporary email account created in his name.

For the next month, Claire continued trying to contact him.

Letters were returned.

Messages disappeared.

Security turned her away from Vale Tower because her access badge had been deactivated.

She went to Ethan’s apartment and discovered the locks had been changed.

A building employee quietly told her Ethan had moved into a secure residence while the merger investigation continued.

Then the news appeared online.

Ethan Vale and Bianca Moretti had been photographed leaving a private dinner together.

The headline called Bianca his longtime family friend and possible future bride.

Claire felt something inside her break.

Yet even then, she did not believe Ethan had written the email.

She knew his flaws.

He could become consumed by work. He could be stubborn, distant and too loyal to his family’s expectations.

But he was not cruel.

Someone wanted her to believe he was.

Claire began saving everything.

Screenshots.

Call logs.

Returned letters.

The false email.

She placed them in a folder and gave a copy to her friend, attorney Lena Ortiz.

“If something happens to me,” Claire said, “take this to the police.”

Lena stared at her.

“Why would something happen?”

Claire showed her the anonymous photograph of Malcolm Vale.

Your child changes everything.

Lena examined the image.

“This could be a threat.”

“Or a warning.”

“From whom?”

“I don’t know.”

Two days later, Claire received a call from St. Catherine’s Hospital.

A woman introduced herself as an administrator from the Vale Maternal Health Program. She said Ethan had privately arranged an appointment for Claire.

Claire nearly ended the call.

Then the woman mentioned a personal detail only Ethan should have known.

The name Claire wanted to give a son.

Noah.

Claire agreed to attend.

When she arrived at the hospital, Bianca was waiting in the lobby.

And she was holding Claire’s private medical file.
