Chapter 13 - the second noah

The helicopter reached Blackwood Island before authorities could intercept it.
The island lay beyond the normal range of coastal cameras, protected by private airspace restrictions created when Malcolm was still head of Vale Global.
No one knew who the second baby was.
The false manifest used Noah’s date of birth, Ethan’s paternity information and Claire’s protected hospital identification number.
Someone had copied records that only Dr. Holloway, Lena and the court should have possessed.
“We have a leak,” Lena said.
Claire looked at every person inside the secure room.
“Who accessed the petition?”
“My office, the judge’s staff and Ethan’s attorneys.”
Ethan called his legal team.
One junior attorney had failed to arrive at work.
His apartment was empty.
His company laptop had been wiped.
Security footage showed him entering a car registered to Moretti Holdings hours after the court filing.
Celeste claimed she had never met him.
Bianca recognized his photograph.
“He worked for Malcolm.”
“Since when?” Ethan asked.
“Years. He was placed in your legal department after the plane crash.”
Malcolm’s network had not disappeared.
It had embedded itself inside Ethan’s company, the foundation, the hospital and possibly the police investigation.
Ethan ordered every employee with access to Claire’s information removed from active duty pending review.
Claire did not wait for the review.
She prepared to leave the hotel with Noah.
Ethan found her placing clothes into a small bag.
“Where are you going?”
“Somewhere your family cannot monitor.”
“They already found your protected hospital number.”
“Which is why I cannot stay here.”
“Let me arrange security.”
“Your security system allowed someone to cut the ballroom lights.”
“Then choose the guards yourself.”
“I don’t trust anyone connected to Vale.”
“Choose people connected to Lena.”
Claire stopped packing.
Ethan did not try to take control. He did not tell her what was best.
He simply placed a black credit card and a phone on the table.
“The phone has no Vale software. Lena’s investigator purchased it this morning. The card is tied to an account in Noah’s trust and cannot be accessed by my company.”
“I don’t want your money.”
“It is Noah’s.”
“He is seven weeks old.”
“And people are already trying to use his identity.”
Claire looked at the card.
“You activated the trust?”
“The court approved the sealed acknowledgment.”
“Then Celeste has lost her board control.”
“Yes.”
“What happens now?”
“The temporary trustee is an independent judge.”
“Not you?”
“I requested that I be excluded until the investigation is complete.”
Claire looked at him with surprise.
“Why?”
“Because Noah’s protection matters more than my authority.”
For the first time since the wedding, Claire saw evidence that Ethan understood what fatherhood required.
Not possession.
Restraint.
She left the card on the table but took the phone.
Lena arranged a safe location outside the city.
Dr. Holloway traveled with Claire to complete Noah’s testing.
Ethan remained behind to help investigators access the Vale network.
Before Claire left, she allowed him to hold Noah again.
This time, there was no one-minute limit.
Ethan sat near the window, speaking quietly to his son.
“I don’t know what they think you are,” he said. “But you are not a project, a trust or a continuation. You are Noah.”
Claire stood in the doorway.
Ethan looked up.
“I will not go to Blackwood Island without your permission.”
“Even if Malcolm contacts you?”
“Yes.”
“Even if he claims Noah is in danger?”
“I will send medical experts. I will send investigators. I will not take our son to him.”
Our son.
The words hurt and comforted her at the same time.
Claire left with Noah that afternoon.
The safe house belonged to Lena’s aunt and had no digital security system. Its locks were mechanical. Its windows faced open farmland.
For the first night in months, Claire slept without dreaming about Room 417.
The peace lasted until 2:13 a.m.
Noah’s monitor made a soft sound.
Claire opened her eyes.
A woman stood beside the bassinet.
Claire reached for the alarm.
The woman raised both hands.
“Please don’t wake him.”
Dr. Holloway entered from the hallway and froze.
The woman was in her late fifties, with gray in her dark hair and a scar near her right temple.
Claire recognized her from the photograph in Box 117.
Audrey Lane.
Ethan’s biological mother.
“How did you find us?” Claire asked.
Audrey looked at Noah.
“The same way Malcolm finds everyone.”
Dr. Holloway moved toward the alarm panel.
Audrey did not stop her.
“I’m not here to take him.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To tell you the baby on Blackwood Island is mine.”
Claire stared at her.
“Yours?”
Audrey nodded.
“My grandson.”
“Ethan has no children except Noah.”
“Not Ethan’s son.”
“Whose?”
Audrey looked toward the dark field outside.
“Ethan has a brother.”
Claire remembered the second infant bracelet mentioned in an old clinic inventory.
“Where is he?”
“Malcolm raised him in secret.”
“Why?”
“Because only one son was supposed to inherit the Vale name. The other was supposed to inherit the program.”
“What is his name?”
“Alexander Reed.”
The surname struck Claire immediately.
Samuel Reed, the auditor found dead inside the vault.
“Samuel was his father?”
“Yes.”
“And the baby?”
“Alexander’s son.”
“Why use Noah’s identity?”
“Because Malcolm needs the world to believe there is only one Vale grandson.”
Claire looked down at Noah.
“What happens to the other baby?”
Audrey’s expression filled with pain.
“The same thing Malcolm planned for Ethan before I helped him escape.”
“You helped Ethan escape what?”
“Blackwood Island.”
Claire shook her head.
“Ethan grew up with his family.”
“The child who left Blackwood was Ethan.”
Audrey moved closer.
“But he was not the first boy Malcolm sent home under that name.”
An alarm sounded outside.
Headlights appeared along the private road.
Audrey turned toward the window.
“He found me.”
Claire lifted Noah.
“How many people are coming?”
May you like
Audrey looked at the approaching vehicles.
“Enough to make it appear that none of us survived the night.”
