Chapter 2 - three minutes in the dark

Claire twisted away and held Noah against her chest.

“Don’t touch him!”

A second later, emergency lights illuminated the ballroom in a dim red glow.

Guests rushed toward the exits, knocking chairs aside. The officers shouted for everyone to remain where they were, but panic spread faster than their voices.

Ethan pushed through the crowd.

“Claire!”

“I’m here.”

He found her beside the flower arch, shielding Noah with her body.

Dr. Holloway stood beside them, still holding the medical file. The hospital’s legal director was speaking urgently into his phone.

Bianca was gone.

Ethan looked toward the place where she had been standing.

“Where is she?”

One of the officers reached the side exit.

“The door was opened during the outage.”

“Find her,” Ethan ordered.

The officer ignored his tone and spoke into his radio.

The chandeliers flickered back to life three minutes later.

The ballroom looked as if a storm had passed through it. Chairs lay overturned. White flowers had been crushed beneath hurried footsteps. Champagne spread across the floor.

Claire inspected Noah carefully.

He stirred but did not cry.

Ethan stood close enough to help but did not reach for the baby.

He seemed to understand that he had no right to touch Noah simply because a test had confirmed their connection.

“Are you both all right?”

“We are now.”

Claire’s answer was not cruel.

That made it worse.

Ethan looked toward the abandoned altar. His wedding ring rested on a velvet cushion. Bianca’s bouquet lay beside it.

Six months earlier, Claire had imagined Ethan seeing their baby for the first time. In those dreams, he had smiled. He had taken her hand. He had promised they would face everything together.

Now he stood beneath the flowers prepared for his marriage to another woman.

“Why didn’t you come to me sooner?” he asked.

“I did.”

“I would have remembered.”

“You never saw me.”

“What does that mean?”

Dr. Holloway stepped closer.

“Claire was admitted to St. Catherine’s Hospital on January eighteenth. She repeatedly asked the staff to contact you.”

“No one called me.”

“We found evidence that someone changed the emergency contact number in her file.”

Ethan looked at the document in Dr. Holloway’s hand.

“Bianca?”

“That is one possibility.”

Claire shook her head.

“She did more than change a number.”

Ethan waited.

Claire did not continue.

The memories were still too close.

The cold hospital room.

The unanswered call button.

The nurse who kept insisting Ethan had refused to speak with her.

The message on Claire’s phone saying Ethan never wanted to see her again.

And the woman in the corridor wearing Bianca’s perfume.

Claire had doubted her own memory for months. The medication, fear and exhaustion had blurred parts of that night, but she had never forgotten that perfume.

Dr. Holloway closed the folder.

“This is not the place to discuss everything.”

Ethan looked around the ballroom.

Guests had begun recording with their phones. His relatives whispered near the front rows. Bianca’s mother, Celeste Moretti, stood beside the altar with a pale, controlled expression.

Celeste had not tried to follow her daughter.

That detail did not escape Claire.

Celeste approached them.

“This entire event has become a public spectacle.”

Ethan turned toward her.

“Your daughter disappeared after being shown evidence that she accessed Claire’s hospital records.”

“She was frightened.”

“So she ran?”

“She is a bride whose wedding was invaded.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Invaded?”

Celeste looked at Noah without warmth.

“You have made your point, Ms. Bennett.”

“My point?”

“You wanted Ethan’s attention. You have it.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“Do not speak to her like that.”

Celeste’s eyebrows lifted.

“An hour ago, you were about to marry my daughter.”

“An hour ago, I did not know I had a son.”

“And now you accept this without question?”

“There is a DNA report.”

“Reports can be manipulated.”

Dr. Holloway held up the sealed copy.

“This test was completed independently by two accredited laboratories.”

Celeste glanced at the file.

For the first time, Claire saw fear behind her polished expression.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Claire moved closer to Dr. Holloway.

“You knew about the authorization signature, didn’t you?”

Celeste looked at her.

“I have no idea what you mean.”

“The signature from Ethan’s father.”

Ethan watched Celeste carefully.

She had served on the Vale Foundation board for more than a decade. She had worked beside his father, Malcolm Vale, before his reported death in a private plane accident.

“Did Bianca have access to my father’s old authorization files?” Ethan asked.

Celeste’s voice remained steady.

“Many people did.”

“Did you?”

“I refuse to be interrogated in front of strangers.”

She turned toward the exit.

One of the officers stopped her.

“Ma’am, we need everyone named in the preliminary report to remain available.”

Celeste looked back at Ethan.

“You are making a terrible mistake.”

“No,” Claire said. “The mistake was believing I would stay silent.”

Celeste studied her for several seconds.

Then she smiled.

It was a small, cold smile that made Claire’s skin tighten.

“You still don’t understand what happened at that hospital.”

“Then explain it.”

“I’m not talking about your medical emergency.”

Celeste looked down at Noah.

“I’m talking about why you were chosen.”

Ethan stepped in front of Claire.

“Chosen for what?”

Celeste said nothing more.

The officers escorted her toward a private room for questioning.

Claire watched her leave.

Ethan turned back to Claire.

“What did she mean?”

“I don’t know.”

But that was not entirely true.

Three weeks before entering the hospital, Claire had received a letter with no return address.

Inside was a photograph of Ethan’s father standing beside a woman Claire had never seen before.

On the back, someone had written four words.

Your child changes everything.

Claire had hidden the photograph because she had not understood it.

Now she wondered whether Bianca had known about it.

She wondered whether Malcolm Vale’s death had been a lie.

Most of all, she wondered why someone had reached for Noah during the darkness.

A security officer approached Ethan.

“We found Ms. Moretti’s wedding shoes in the service corridor.”

“And Bianca?”

“No sign of her.”

The officer handed Ethan a small object recovered beside the shoes.

It was an access card from St. Catherine’s Hospital.

The same kind of card used in the surveillance recording.

There was a fresh drop of blood on its edge.
