Chapter 10 - no wedding, no forgiveness

Bianca was moved into protective custody before sunrise.
Celeste denied every accusation.
She claimed Bianca was emotionally unstable and had invented Malcolm’s survival to avoid responsibility.
Yet investigators found evidence that Celeste had transferred $4.8 million from a private foundation account to an offshore company two days before Claire entered Room 417.
The company had also paid the driver of the black car outside the wedding.
For the first time, Celeste’s lawyers stopped answering questions.
Ethan issued a public statement canceling the marriage.
He did not mention Claire’s name or Noah’s identity. He stated only that serious evidence had emerged requiring a criminal investigation.
The photographs had already revealed more than he wanted.
By morning, news vans surrounded the hotel.
Claire stayed with Noah in a secured suite.
Ethan knocked before entering.
He carried no phone, no documents and no expectation that she would welcome him.
“I signed this.”
He placed a document on the table.
Claire read it.
It was a voluntary acknowledgment of paternity accompanied by a financial protection agreement for Noah.
The document did not request custody.
It did not require Claire to change Noah’s last name.
It did not contain a confidentiality clause.
“You had your lawyers prepare this overnight?”
“Yes.”
“What do you expect me to do?”
“Nothing today.”
“Then why give it to me?”
“Because Noah should not have to wait for me to behave like his father.”
Claire set the document down.
“Signing a paper doesn’t make you his father.”
“I know.”
“You missed the pregnancy.”
“I know.”
“You missed his birth.”
“I know.”
“You weren’t there when I thought I might lose him.”
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“I know.”
She wanted him to argue.
She wanted him to say Bianca had deceived him and none of it was his fault.
Instead, he accepted every accusation.
That made it more difficult to keep her anger simple.
“I’m not coming back to you,” Claire said.
“I didn’t ask you to.”
“You were preparing to marry someone else yesterday.”
“I was.”
“You don’t get to look at Noah and pretend we can become a family.”
“I’m not pretending.”
“Then what are you doing?”
“Trying to become someone he may choose to know one day.”
Noah began to cry.
Claire lifted him from the bassinet.
Ethan stayed where he was.
After a moment, Claire looked at him.
“Wash your hands.”
He did so immediately.
When he returned, Claire sat on the couch.
“You can hold him for one minute.”
Ethan approached slowly.
Claire showed him how to support Noah’s head.
When she placed the baby in his arms, Ethan stopped breathing.
Noah’s cries softened.
His tiny hand closed around Ethan’s finger.
Ethan looked down at him with an expression Claire had never seen before.
Not pride.
Not ownership.
Wonder mixed with grief.
“Hello, Noah,” he whispered. “I’m sorry I’m late.”
Claire looked toward the window.
She refused to cry.
Ethan kept his promise and returned Noah after one minute.
“Thank you.”
“This doesn’t mean I forgive you.”
“I know.”
“It doesn’t mean you can make decisions for him.”
“I understand.”
“And if your family is connected to what happened, I will take Noah somewhere none of you can find us.”
Ethan nodded.
“If my family threatens him, I will help you disappear.”
Claire looked at him.
He meant it.
A knock came from the door.
Lena entered with Dr. Holloway.
“We found the hospital employee who created the false record under Claire’s name,” Lena said.
“Who?” Claire asked.
“A systems administrator named Peter Shaw.”
“Has he been arrested?”
“He was found dead this morning.”
The room became silent.
Dr. Holloway handed Claire a printed email.
“Before he died, he sent this to the hospital’s legal office.”
The email stated that Peter had been ordered to alter Claire’s records by someone using Malcolm Vale’s authorization code.
It also mentioned a private medical project called Continuance.
Ethan read the word.
“I have never heard of it.”
Dr. Holloway had.
“When I was a resident, there were rumors about a private research program funded through the Vale Foundation. No one knew exactly what it studied.”
Claire looked at Noah.
“What does that have to do with my baby?”
Dr. Holloway hesitated.
“Peter’s email included a patient reference number.”
She turned the page.
The number matched Noah’s hospital birth record.
Claire held him closer.
Ethan stepped beside her.
“What did the program want with my son?”
Dr. Holloway’s answer came quietly.
“According to the email, Noah was not registered as a new patient.”
May you like
“What was he registered as?”
“A successful continuation of Patient One.”
