Chapter 5 - The Detective Who Disappeared)

Mara Vance's car was found beneath an overpass at 1:07 in the morning.

The driver's door was open.

Her phone lay smashed on the pavement.

There was blood on the steering wheel.

Not enough to confirm that she had been killed.

Enough to make everyone fear the possibility.

Evan stood in the secure apartment kitchen while Daniel Ruiz spoke quietly with federal agents.

Claire sat at the table with a blanket around her shoulders.

Sophie had finally fallen asleep in the next room.

Milo lay outside the bedroom door.

"He won't leave her," Evan said.

Claire looked toward the dog.

"He didn't leave her earlier either."

A painful silence followed.

Evan sat beside his wife.

"What happened today?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"I remember pieces."

"Tell me."

"I was feeding Sophie breakfast."

"What time?"

"Around eight."

"Then?"

"I got an email from Samuel Briggs."

"The attorney who hired you?"

"Yes. He said he needed to meet immediately."

"At the house?"

"No. I refused to meet."

"Why?"

"Because the message felt wrong."

"How?"

Claire opened her eyes.

"Samuel always signed his emails with S. Briggs. This one said Samuel."

Evan nodded slowly.

"So you knew someone might be using his account."

"I tried calling him. His phone was disconnected."

"What did you do?"

"I copied everything to the drive and hid it in Milo's collar."

Evan looked toward the bedroom.

"Then somebody came."

Claire touched her temple.

"I heard the doorbell."

"Who was it?"

"I don't remember."

"Try."

"I opened the door."

Her breathing changed.

Evan took her hand.

"Don't force it."

"No. I need to remember."

She stared at the table.

"There was a woman."

Ruiz approached when he heard that.

"What woman?"

Claire looked up.

"I couldn't see her face clearly. She had sunglasses."

"Hair?"

"Blonde."

"Age?"

"Maybe thirties. Maybe forties."

"Clothes?"

"Blue jacket. White blouse."

"Did you know her?"

Claire's brow tightened.

"I thought I did."

"What does that mean?"

"Something about her voice felt familiar."

"Did you let her inside?"

"I think she said there had been a gas leak reported nearby."

Ruiz looked at Evan.

"Utility worker?"

"No uniform," Claire said. "She showed me identification."

"Fake?"

"Probably."

"What happened next?"

"I remember her asking for water."

Claire stopped.

Her hand began trembling.

"Then Sophie started crying."

Evan leaned closer.

"And?"

"I turned toward the kitchen."

Claire's eyes widened.

"Someone grabbed me from behind."

Evan felt his jaw tighten.

"Another person?"

"Yes."

"Man or woman?"

"Man."

"Did you see him?"

"No."

"I fought."

She touched the bruise near her mouth.

"He forced something between my teeth."

Ruiz nodded.

"The medication."

"I remember falling."

"Then?"

"Nothing until the hospital."

Evan stood and walked toward the window.

He wanted to break something.

He imagined two strangers inside his home while Sophie sat nearby.

"Did they hurt Sophie?"

Claire whispered.

"I don't know."

"She's fine."

"I left her alone."

"You didn't leave her."

"They made me."

Evan turned.

"They did this."

Claire looked down.

Ruiz's phone vibrated.

He answered.

"Ruiz."

He listened.

"Repeat that."

Everyone watched him.

"Send me the image."

He ended the call.

"What?" Evan asked.

"Traffic camera caught a vehicle leaving the area where Vance's car was found."

"License?"

"Obscured."

"Driver?"

"No."

Ruiz opened the photograph.

A dark sedan.

Blurry.

Nearly useless.

Then Claire pointed.

"Zoom in."

Ruiz enlarged the passenger side.

A face was visible through the window.

Mara Vance.

Alive.

Sitting upright.

Evan leaned closer.

"She doesn't look restrained."

Ruiz's expression hardened.

"No."

Claire stared at the image.

"She went willingly."

"Maybe."

"Or she's involved."

Ruiz did not answer.

Evan remembered Vance handling Milo.

Entering their home.

Knowing where Sophie had been taken.

"She knew Lauren's address."

Claire looked at him.

"She arranged the hospital security."

"She knew everything."

Ruiz shook his head.

"Don't jump to conclusions."

"Someone photographed my daughter five minutes after she arrived at Lauren's."

"That could have been surveillance already in place."

"Or Vance told them."

Ruiz looked at the photograph again.

"I've known Mara Vance for eleven years."

"Do you trust her?"

Ruiz took too long to answer.

"Yes."

Evan looked away.

"Then find her."

At 3:20 in the morning, Claire finally slept.

Evan remained awake.

He sat on the floor beside Sophie's crib.

Milo rested his head on Evan's leg.

The baby moved in her sleep.

Her fingers curled around a small stuffed rabbit.

Evan thought about the afternoon.

The dog bowl.

The crying.

The empty house.

Everything that followed had begun with one simple question.

Where's Mommy?

His phone buzzed.

He expected another threat.

Instead, the message came from his company's internal emergency system.

ALL SENIOR FINANCE STAFF REQUIRED ON SITE AT 8 A.M. FOLLOWING A SECURITY INCIDENT. DO NOT ACCESS COMPANY SYSTEMS REMOTELY.

Evan showed Ruiz.

"Trap?" he asked.

"Possibly."

"I have to go."

"No."

"If Whitmore knows Claire survived, they'll start destroying records."

"Federal teams can handle it."

"They don't know the systems like I do."

Ruiz studied him.

"You want to go inside."

"I spent twelve years there."

"That doesn't make it safe."

"It makes me useful."

Claire appeared in the doorway.

She had heard everything.

"He's right."

Evan stood.

"You should be sleeping."

"You need access to the transaction archive."

"What archive?"

"The one under your credentials."

Evan frowned.

"I don't have a hidden archive."

"You do. You just don't know it."

She walked toward him.

"Someone has been routing approvals through your employee account for two years."

Evan felt cold.

"What?"

"That's why I started looking at you."

"You said I wasn't involved."

"You aren't."

"But my credentials are."

Ruiz understood first.

"They're setting him up."

Claire nodded.

"If this collapses, Whitmore will claim Evan designed the transactions."

Evan stared at his wife.

"How bad?"

"If the evidence disappears?"

She took a breath.

"You could spend the rest of your life proving you didn't steal hundreds of millions of dollars."

The room went silent.

Then another phone rang.

Ruiz answered.

This time, he put the call on speaker.

A man's voice came through.

"Agent Ruiz?"

"Who is this?"

"Samuel Briggs."

Claire stood.

"Samuel?"

"I'm sorry."

"Where are you?"

"You need to listen carefully."

Ruiz began tracing the call.

Briggs continued.

"They know Claire survived."

"Who?"

"Everyone."

"Where are you?"

"That doesn't matter."

"Samuel, did you hire me to investigate Whitmore?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because my client discovered where the money came from."

Claire looked at Ruiz.

"What client?"

Briggs whispered.

"Your husband's father."

Evan stopped breathing.

"My father died nine years ago."

Briggs answered softly.

"No, Mr. Carter."

May you like

"He didn't."

The call disconnected.
