Thomas was still inside a secured hospital room when federal agents arrived.
He did not resist.
Evan watched through the door as they placed restraints on his father's wrists.
Thomas looked at him.
"Evan."
"You called Robert."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I needed him to answer."
"Answer what?"
"Where Dana was."
Evan stared.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
"Good."
Thomas looked tired.
"Robert believes Dana betrayed him."
"She did."
"Not in the way you think."
"What does that mean?"
"Dana has been feeding information to me for two years."
Evan laughed.
"She drugged Claire."
"Because Robert ordered her to recover the drive."
"She nearly killed my wife."
"She used a lower dose than ordered."
"That makes her a hero?"
"No."
Thomas looked down.
"It makes her someone who waited too long to choose a side."
Evan thought of the warehouse.
Dana saying nobody was supposed to be hurt.
Perhaps guilt was real.
Perhaps not.
"Where is she?"
"Julian has her."
"How do you know?"
"Robert told me."
"Why would Robert tell you?"
"Because Julian took her to force Robert to surrender the origin accounts."
Evan felt a headache forming.
Everyone wanted the same records.
Everyone betrayed everyone else.
"Where?"
"Old Meridian facility."
Ruiz stepped into the room.
"Meridian closed eleven years ago."
Thomas looked at him.
"The public building closed."
"There is another?"
"Underground archive beneath it."
Evelyn confirmed the location.
For once, she and Thomas agreed.
The Meridian facility stood outside the city, hidden beneath a forested medical research campus.
Federal tactical teams prepared to enter before dawn.
Evan was ordered to remain behind.
He refused.
Ruiz threatened to arrest him.
Claire supported Ruiz.
"You have Sophie."
"Exactly."
"She needs one parent who isn't running toward gunfire."
Evan looked at his wife.
"You nearly died because of my family."
"No. I nearly died because criminals made choices."
"Same difference."
"No."
Claire touched his face.
"Do not become Thomas."
Evan understood.
Do not confuse abandonment with protection.
He stayed.
At 5:42, the operation began.
Ruiz wore a live camera.
Evan and Claire watched from the command vehicle.
Agents entered through three access points.
The upper building was empty.
Then they found the underground elevator.
Beneath Meridian was an archive larger than the original facility.
Medical files.
Financial records.
DNA samples.
Surveillance.
Decades of secrets.
"Move," Ruiz ordered.
They found Dana in a locked examination room.
Alive.
Bruised.
Terrified.
No Julian.
"Where is he?" Ruiz asked.
Dana struggled to speak.
"Left."
"When?"
"An hour ago."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Why did he keep you?"
"He wanted Evelyn."
Ruiz frowned.
"He had you to trade for Evelyn?"
Dana shook her head.
"No."
"He wanted Evelyn to come here."
"Why?"
Dana looked toward the archive hallway.
"Because he planted explosives."
Ruiz shouted.
"Evacuate."
The command vehicle erupted into activity.
Agents ran.
Evan watched the camera shake as Ruiz carried Dana toward the elevator.
A countdown appeared on an underground monitor.

Claire grabbed Evan's hand.
"Come on."
02:00.
Agents reached the elevator.
Dead.
"Stairs," someone shouted.

They ran.
Dana stumbled.
Ruiz lifted her.

Exit ahead.

They reached the upper level.

Outside.

"Clear the perimeter."

The Meridian building exploded.
Windows blew outward.
The ground shook.
Smoke rose through the trees.
Claire covered her mouth.
Evan stared.
Ruiz's camera went black.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Then his voice returned.
"We're alive."
Claire began crying from relief.
The archive beneath Meridian was destroyed.
Most physical evidence disappeared with it.
But Dana survived.
And Dana talked.
For six hours, she described Robert Whitmore's role.
Julian's network.
The money.
The violence.
The attempts to recover Claire's ledger.
The hospital shooting ordered to remove Evan.
Her testimony, combined with Claire's evidence and the server copy, was enough.
Robert Whitmore was extradited.
Charges followed.
Fraud.
Racketeering.
Attempted murder conspiracy.
Money laundering.
Public corruption.
Several officials resigned.
Others were arrested.
Whitmore Development collapsed within a week.
The news called it one of the largest financial scandals in state history.
For the Carter family, none of that felt like victory.
Julian remained missing.
Evelyn remained in federal custody, though her attorneys argued there was insufficient evidence to hold her on the most serious allegations.
Thomas cooperated in exchange for reduced charges.
Dana entered witness protection.
Lauren returned home under guard.
And Claire finally walked back into the house on Hawthorne Lane twelve days after Evan had found her unconscious.
The broken bedroom window had been replaced.
The hidden camera was gone.
The turquoise dog bowl sat inside an evidence box.
Sophie walked uncertainly across the living room and pointed toward the place where it used to be.
"Puppy food."
Claire began crying.
Evan lifted Sophie.
"No more puppy food for you."
Sophie laughed.
Milo barked.
For one moment, the house sounded like home again.
Then Claire noticed an envelope beneath the front door.
No stamp.
No address.
Inside was a photograph of Julian Cross.
The photograph had been taken that morning.
