Chapter 14 - The Night Julian Came Home)

Police evacuated the street.

Federal vehicles surrounded the Carter house.

For six hours, nothing happened.

No Julian.

No suspicious cars.

No threats.

Ruiz believed the photograph might have been taken days earlier.

Claire disagreed.

"The newspaper under his arm is today's."

Evan enlarged the picture.

She was right.

Julian had been close enough to their home to stand beneath the neighborhood sign that morning.

"Why announce himself?" Evan asked.

Thomas answered through a secure call.

"Because he wants you afraid."

"He succeeded."

"No."

Thomas looked at Evan through the screen.

"He wants you to react."

"How?"

"Run."

"Why?"

"Because frightened people abandon routines. They choose unfamiliar roads. Hotels. Friends' houses. Safe locations that aren't actually safe."

Evan understood.

"He wants to control where we go."

"Yes."

"Then we stay."

Claire looked at him.

"With a child?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"We are not using Sophie to prove a point."

She was right.

They moved Sophie and Lauren to a federal compound without telling Evan the final location.

Even Evan could not reveal what he did not know.

Claire stayed.

"We finish this."

At 11:30 that night, the house was dark.

Evan sat in the kitchen.

Claire upstairs.

Milo beside him.

Agents watched from neighboring properties.

Julian called at 11:47.

Evan answered.

"Hello, nephew."

"Where are you?"

"Nearby."

"What do you want?"

"To speak."

"We're speaking."

"Face to face."

"No."

Julian laughed softly.

"You sound like Rebecca."

"You knew her?"

"She was my sister."

"Did you kill her?"

Silence.

"Is that what Thomas told you?"

"He said he didn't know."

"Thomas always knew less than he pretended."

"Answer."

"No. I did not kill Rebecca."

"Did Evelyn?"

Another silence.

"Ask her."

"I am asking you."

"You think my mother is helping you."

"I think everyone in your family lies."

"Our family."

"No."

Julian laughed again.

"You can reject money. History is more stubborn."

"What do you want?"

"The origin drive."

"It is already with federal investigators."

"Copies can disappear."

"Not all of them."

"Then I need Evelyn."

"Why?"

"She knows the final accounts."

Claire entered the kitchen quietly.

Evan put the call on speaker.

Julian continued.

"The records Claire found show what happened after the money entered the network. Evelyn knows where it began."

"Why does that matter?"

"Because the money wasn't stolen."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

Julian heard her.

"Hello, Claire."

"What do you mean it wasn't stolen?"

"It was hidden."

"From whom?"

"Governments. Corporations. Families."

"What money?"

Julian paused.

"Assets belonging to people who were supposed to disappear."

Evan looked at Claire.

"Witnesses?"

"Sometimes."

"Criminals?"

"Sometimes."

"Who else?"

"People like Thomas."

Claire understood.

"The network began as an identity and asset relocation system."

Julian laughed.

"Very good."

"Then became laundering."

"Power corrupts useful things."

"You corrupted it."

"Evelyn did long before me."

A sound came from upstairs.

Milo stood.

Growled.

Evan's heart stopped.

Claire reached for the gun Ruiz had legally placed in a lockbox for emergency protection.

Evan whispered into the phone.

"You're inside."

Julian laughed.

"No."

Another sound.

Bedroom floorboard.

Agents should have detected entry.

Unless someone had been inside before the perimeter was established.

Evan signaled Claire.

She called Ruiz silently.

They moved toward the stairs.

Milo ran ahead.

At the top landing, a figure stepped from Sophie's nursery.

Not Julian.

Mara Vance.

Evan stared.

"What are you doing here?"

Mara raised both hands.

"Don't shoot."

"How did you get inside?"

"Through the attic access from the neighboring house."

Claire kept the gun lowered but ready.

"Why?"

Mara looked toward Evan's phone.

"Is Julian on the line?"

Evan checked.

Call disconnected.

Mara cursed.

"What is happening?"

She pulled a small device from her pocket.

"Julian's phone pinged here."

"He isn't here."

"I know."

"Then?"

Mara showed the screen.

The signal appeared inside the house.

Moving.

From downstairs.

Evan turned.

Milo barked below.

Once.

Then yelped.

Evan ran.

"Milo."

The back door stood open.

The kitchen was empty.

On the floor lay Julian's phone.

Milo stood beside it.

Unhurt.

Evan picked it up.

A video was playing.

Live feed.

Sophie asleep in a small bed.

Evan's blood turned to ice.

"Where is that?"

Claire screamed Sophie's name.

Mara grabbed her phone.

"Call the compound."

Evan stared at the screen.

A person entered the room where Sophie slept.

Silver hair.

Cream coat.

Evelyn.

Claire stopped breathing.

"Evelyn is in custody."

Mara shook her head.

"She was released three hours ago."

"What?"

"Her attorneys got an emergency ruling."

On the video, Evelyn sat beside Sophie.

She touched the child's hair gently.

Then looked directly into the hidden camera.

"Evan," she said.

May you like

"I believe it is time you heard the truth from someone who was actually there."

The video ended.
