Chapter 12 - Evelyn)

Evan stepped between Evelyn and his family.

"Don't move."

Evelyn's smile remained.

"You look exactly like Rebecca."

Federal agents appeared behind her.

Weapons raised.

"Hands where we can see them."

Evelyn lifted both hands.

Calmly.

Almost amused.

"I came voluntarily."

"During a fire alarm?" Ruiz asked.

"A distraction seemed necessary."

Ruiz ordered agents to restrain her.

Evelyn did not resist.

Claire held Sophie against her chest.

Milo growled continuously.

Evelyn looked at the dog.

"Animals are often better judges of character than people."

"Don't look at my daughter," Evan said.

Evelyn returned her gaze to him.

"My great granddaughter."

"My daughter."

"Both statements are true."

"You have no claim to her."

"I did not say I did."

"Then why are you here?"

"To keep Julian from destroying what remains of this family."

Evan laughed.

"You built the family he's destroying."

Evelyn's eyes sharpened.

"So Thomas has been speaking."

"Enough."

"Thomas has always confused guilt with morality."

Ruiz stepped forward.

"You are coming with us."

"Of course."

Evelyn glanced at the smoke.

"You may want to evacuate first."

Ruiz looked toward an agent.

The agent checked his radio.

"No fire. Smoke device in the ventilation."

Evelyn smiled.

"As I said. A distraction."

At the federal field office, Evelyn requested an attorney.

Then waived her right to one.

For three hours she answered questions selectively.

She admitted founding Meridian.

Admitted knowing Crest River existed.

Denied directing financial crimes.

Denied ordering violence.

Denied interfering with Margaret Carter's medical treatment.

"Gregory Shaw acted without my authorization," she said.

"Where is he?" Ruiz asked.

"Dead."

Evan stared.

"How do you know?"

"Because Julian killed him yesterday."

"Why?"

"Gregory failed to recover Claire's evidence."

Ruiz leaned forward.

"Where is Julian?"

"I don't know."

"Robert Whitmore?"

"Fleeing."

"Dana?"

Evelyn paused.

"Alive, I hope."

Claire watched through the observation window.

Evan stood beside her.

"She talks like this is a board meeting."

"People like her survive by never feeling rushed."

"Do you believe anything she says?"

"Some of it."

"Which part?"

"That Julian killed Gregory."

"Why?"

"Because she volunteered it."

"Could be manipulation."

"It is."

Claire looked at him.

"Manipulation works best when built around truth."

Inside, Ruiz asked about Rebecca.

For the first time, Evelyn's calm changed.

"My daughter made choices."

"She died after giving birth."

"Yes."

"Did you kill her?"

"No."

"Did someone acting for you?"

"No."

"Did you try to take Evan?"

Evelyn looked through the one way glass.

Directly toward Evan, though she should not have been able to see him.

"Yes."

Evan felt a chill.

Ruiz continued.

"Why?"

"He was my grandson."

"Thomas and Margaret protected him."

"They stole him."

"Rebecca asked them to."

Evelyn's jaw tightened.

"You have no evidence of that."

"We have letters."

A lie.

Evelyn did not know.

For the first time, fear flickered across her expression.

Tiny.

But real.

Ruiz saw it.

"So Rebecca did leave instructions."

Evelyn remained silent.

"Where are Julian and Robert?"

No answer.

"Who shot Claire Carter?"

Evelyn looked toward the glass again.

"Not who you think."

Evan entered the interrogation room without permission.

Ruiz stood.

"Evan."

"No."

Evan sat across from Evelyn.

"Who shot at my wife?"

Evelyn studied him.

"Dana drugged Claire."

"I know."

"Robert ordered the hospital attempt."

"I know that too."

"Robert did not hire the shooter."

"Then who did?"

"Julian."

"Why would Julian want Claire alive and dead at the same time?"

"He didn't fire at Claire."

Evan frowned.

"The bullet went through her hospital window."

"Who was standing beside her?"

Evan felt cold.

"Me."

Evelyn nodded.

"The target was you."

Silence.

"Why?"

"Because Julian discovered who you are."

"His nephew."

"And my heir."

Evan laughed.

"I'm not inheriting anything."

"You misunderstand."

Evelyn leaned closer.

"Julian has spent his entire life believing the network would become his."

"I don't want it."

"He doesn't care."

"Then tell him."

"I have."

"Why isn't he listening?"

"Because men who spend decades chasing power rarely recognize someone who genuinely rejects it."

Evan stood.

"Then help us find him."

Evelyn leaned back.

"I will."

"Why?"

"Because Julian crossed the one line I warned him never to cross."

"What line?"

Evelyn looked toward Claire outside.

Then toward the photograph of Sophie on the evidence board.

"Children."

Evan stared.

"What did he do?"

Evelyn's voice became colder.

"He ordered Sophie taken from Lauren's house."

Evan's fists tightened.

"The photograph."

"That was the surveillance team preparing to move."

"Why didn't they?"

"Because I stopped them."

Evan did not believe her.

Yet the photograph had been taken.

The child had remained unharmed.

Evelyn continued.

"Julian believes Sophie is leverage."

"And you?"

"I believe she is innocent."

"So was Rebecca."

Pain crossed Evelyn's face.

Real or performed, Evan could not tell.

"Yes."

Ruiz entered.

"Enough."

An agent whispered into his ear.

Ruiz stiffened.

"What?"

The agent spoke again.

Ruiz turned toward Evan.

"Robert Whitmore was arrested."

Relief.

Small, but real.

"Where?"

"Quebec."

"And Dana?"

"No."

Ruiz looked toward Evelyn.

"Canadian authorities recovered Robert's phone."

"So?"

"There was an outgoing call twenty minutes before arrest."

"To Julian?"

"No."

May you like

Ruiz stared directly at Evelyn.

"To Thomas Carter."
