Chapter 7 - The House on Larkspur Lane
Claire waited until they were home before asking Ava about the other mother.
Detective Ortiz had arranged temporary police protection outside the house. The locks were changed, cameras were checked, and Ava was excused from school.
Claire sat with her on the living-room rug.
“What did the woman tell you?”
Ava turned a puzzle piece in her hands.
“She said you weren’t my first mother.”
Claire felt Ethan stiffen beside her.
“That isn’t true,” Claire said.
“I know.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she lies.”
The certainty in Ava’s voice made Claire ache.
“What else did she say?”
“She said Grandma Evelyn took me from someone.”
Claire reached for Ethan’s hand.
Ava had been born at St. Matthew’s Hospital after an uncomplicated pregnancy. Claire remembered holding her for the first time, Ethan sleeping upright in a chair, and Evelyn arriving with a blue blanket she had made herself.
There was no other mother.
“They were trying to confuse you,” Claire said.
“They said there was a file.”
“What file?”
Ava assembled two puzzle pieces.
“M-17.”
The code on the Legacy Transfer document.
Detective Ortiz believed the letter might identify a category and the number might represent the order in which targets were added. But Ava remembered hearing it before entering the blue room.
That night, Ortiz received a report from the property on Larkspur Lane.
A hidden storage space beneath the basement stairs contained shredded files. Technicians reconstructed sections of several pages.
One listed Ava’s school schedule.
One listed Ethan’s work hours.
Another contained Claire’s medical history.
A fourth listed Marisol’s salon appointments.
The operation had mapped nearly every reliable adult around Ava.
There was also a list of seven children assigned to the blue room.
Investigators contacted the families. Three had already lost temporary custody after Northbridge submitted evaluations questioning their fitness.
Two children had been placed with relatives connected to Mercer’s legal network.
The remaining families were preparing for court hearings.
The scheme was larger than Ava.
The next morning, Detective Ortiz organized a second search of the Larkspur house. Claire and Ethan were not allowed inside, but Ortiz later showed them photographs.
A white coat had been discovered behind a false panel. It contained no name tag, but a gold ring remained in one pocket.
The ring was engraved with a small letter E.
Claire recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to Evelyn.
She had worn it for more than twenty years.
After Evelyn’s funeral, Claire had searched for it. Diane believed it had been lost at the hospital.
Now it was inside the blue room.
The discovery gave the woman in the white coat access to Evelyn’s belongings before or shortly after her death.
It also made the claims about an “other mother” feel more deliberate.
At noon, Detective Ortiz received a location for Richard Bell’s car. It had been abandoned near a bus terminal.
Inside the trunk were empty file boxes and a Westbridge Academy access card.
One box held a receipt from a storage company.
Police obtained a warrant and opened the rented unit.
They found desks, cameras, computers, children’s artwork, and documents removed from the blue room before the search.
Jonathan Mercer’s name appeared throughout the financial records.
So did Dr. Celeste Wynn’s.
Richard Bell’s name appeared on transportation schedules.
Kayla Dunn had been responsible for gathering information in public places.
Diane was listed as a “cooperative guardian candidate.”
Beside her name was a note.
UNAWARE OF FULL OBJECTIVE.
At the back of the unit was a filing cabinet containing records organized by family.
Detective Ortiz opened the Hales’ drawer.
The first folder contained Claire’s false fitness review.
The second contained Ethan’s Northbridge consent form.
The third contained photographs of Ava.
The fourth was labeled MATERNAL ORIGIN.
Inside was a copy of Ava’s birth certificate.
The names of Claire and Ethan were printed correctly.
Behind it was another birth certificate bearing the same date, hospital, and identification number.
The infant’s name was not Ava Hale.
It was Mia Voss.
Before anyone could examine the rest of the folder, an alarm sounded inside the storage facility.
Smoke began filling the rear corridor.
Investigators evacuated as the sprinkler system activated. The fire was contained quickly, but water damaged part of the evidence.
When Ortiz returned to the Hales’ drawer, the MATERNAL ORIGIN folder was gone.
Security footage showed a figure in a maintenance uniform entering during the evacuation.
The figure left through a service door carrying the folder beneath one arm.
The person never showed a clear face.
But before leaving, the intruder placed something on the hood of Ortiz’s car.
It was Marisol’s business card.
