SHOWED HER WHAT, AVA? / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - Don’t Tell Mom

Six weeks passed.

Marisol reopened the salon on a rainy Saturday morning.

The damaged listening device had been removed. Every office, mirror, electrical outlet, and styling station had been inspected. New security cameras covered both entrances.

Ava sat beneath the same pink cape.

This time, Claire sat beside her.

Ethan waited near the window with two cups of coffee and a bag of pastries. He no longer disappeared into private calls or made decisions about Ava without Claire.

The family was not magically repaired.

Trust did not return in a single conversation.

But it was returning.

Slowly.

Honestly.

Ava had decided to keep her hair just below her shoulders. Marisol trimmed only a small amount and explained every movement before making it.

“No surprises,” Marisol said.

Ava smiled.

“No bad secrets.”

“Exactly.”

Sophie Lane sat at another station with her mother. The other children connected to Northbridge were receiving independent support, and every guardianship case connected to Mercer was being reviewed.

Jonathan Mercer remained in custody while awaiting trial.

Richard Bell had provided information about additional Northbridge properties.

Kayla Dunn had entered a cooperation agreement.

Celeste Wynn refused to reveal Helena’s location or explain the name Mia.

The investigation into the old Maternal Response Study continued.

Claire had received access to parts of her childhood file. She learned that Evelyn had removed her from the program after reporting Helena’s research methods. Evelyn later adopted Claire when Helena disappeared.

The discovery did not erase Evelyn’s deception.

It also did not erase the love with which she had raised Claire.

Both truths existed at once.

Near noon, a delivery worker entered the salon carrying a narrow white box.

“Package for Claire Hale.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

Neither had ordered anything.

The return address belonged to a closed maternity clinic.

Detective Ortiz had instructed them not to open unexpected packages, so Ethan contacted her while Marisol cleared the area around the front desk.

Ortiz arrived twenty minutes later with an evidence technician.

The box contained no electronic device or dangerous material.

Inside was a folded baby blanket.

The fabric was pale blue and embroidered with two small initials.

A.H.

M.V.

Beneath the blanket were two hospital bracelets.

The first read:

AVA HALE.

The second read:

MIA VOSS.

Both displayed the same birth date.

Claire stared at them.

“This is impossible.”

Ethan examined the printing.

“Ava was born at St. Matthew’s. The duplicate certificate said the same hospital.”

Detective Ortiz placed both bracelets into evidence bags.

“There’s a letter.”

Claire unfolded it.

The message contained only one sentence.

THE WRONG CHILD LEFT THE HOSPITAL WITH EVELYN HARPER.

Ava stood from the salon chair.

“What does that mean?”

Claire folded the letter before Ava could read it.

“We don’t know yet.”

Ava watched her face.

“Is it about Mia?”

Claire could not lie again.

“Yes.”

The salon phone rang.

Marisol answered, listened, and then looked toward Claire.

“It’s for Ava.”

“No,” Claire said immediately.

The caller had not provided a name.

Detective Ortiz instructed Marisol to place the call on speaker while technicians traced it.

Marisol pressed the button.

A girl’s voice filled the salon.

She sounded older than Ava, perhaps fourteen or fifteen.

“Ava?”

Claire moved closer to the phone.

“Who is this?”

The caller breathed quietly.

“My name is Mia.”

No one spoke.

“I found one of Dr. Wynn’s phones,” the girl continued. “It had photographs of Ava, the salon, and your house.”

“Where are you?” Ortiz asked.

“I can’t say.”

“Are you in danger?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire fought to keep her voice steady.

“Why did you call Ava?”

“Because Helena told me Ava was my replacement.”

Claire felt Ethan take her hand.

“That isn’t true,” Claire said. “Ava did not replace anyone.”

The girl began crying softly.

“You don’t understand. Helena has records from the hospital. She said Evelyn switched the names.”

Detective Ortiz signaled that the call was bouncing through several locations.

“Mia, listen carefully,” Claire said. “You need to tell us where you are so we can keep you safe.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because she is standing outside the room.”

A floorboard creaked through the speaker.

The girl lowered her voice.

“She thinks I’m asleep.”

Claire stepped closer to the phone as if distance mattered.

“Who is outside?”

“Helena.”

Ava slipped her hand into Claire’s.

Mia whispered again.

“She told me the Hales believe Northbridge is over.”

The technicians continued typing, but the trace remained incomplete.

“She said Celeste was only the first part.”

Claire looked at Detective Ortiz.

“What is the second part?”

Mia did not answer.

A door opened somewhere near her.

The girl’s breathing stopped.

Then Helena Voss spoke in the background.

“Mia, who are you calling?”

The phone moved.

Mia whispered three urgent words before the line disconnected.

“Don’t tell Mom.”

Everyone stared at the silent speaker.

A moment later, Detective Ortiz’s computer displayed a partial location.

The call had come from a remote house nearly two hundred miles away.

The property was registered to a woman who had officially died twenty-five years earlier.

Evelyn Harper.

Before Ortiz could speak, Ava pointed toward the salon mirror.

A silver-haired woman stood across the street in the rain.

She wore Evelyn’s gold ring.

Claire rushed toward the door.

The woman turned and entered a waiting car.

As it pulled away, Ava noticed an envelope taped to the outside of the salon window.

On the front was Claire’s childhood name.

CLAIRE VOSS.

Inside was a photograph of two newborn babies lying side by side beneath pale blue blankets.

One bracelet read M-17.

The other read M-18.

On the back, Helena had written:

YOU HAVE BEEN ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION.

MIA IS NOT AVA’S SISTER.

SHE IS YOURS.

Below the message was a date.

Tomorrow.

And an address beneath Westbridge Academy that did not appear on any map.

Ava looked up at Claire.

“What happens tomorrow?”

Before Claire could answer, the lights inside the salon flickered.

The locked office door slowly opened by itself.

May you like

From the darkness inside, Evelyn Harper’s recorded voice began to play.

“Claire, if you are hearing this, Helena has found the final child.”
