Chapter 10 - The Camera in the Doll
The call ended before Claire could respond.
She played the voice repeatedly.
Ethan recognized it too.
It sounded like Evelyn.
Not similar.
Not close.
It sounded exactly like Claire’s mother.
“That’s impossible,” Claire said.
Detective Ortiz requested every security camera surrounding the Franklin bus depot. Patrol officers entered the building within six minutes.
They found Marisol in a locked maintenance office, frightened but unharmed.
No woman was with her.
The rear doors stood open, and a black sedan had left moments before police arrived.
Marisol was taken to a secure medical center for evaluation. Claire was permitted to speak with her briefly.
“I thought I was meeting Thomas Reed,” Marisol explained. “He sent me a message asking about Kayla. When I arrived, the impostor from the station was waiting.”
“Did you see the woman?”
“Only through a glass door.”
“Was it Evelyn?”
“I couldn’t see her face.”
“But you heard her voice.”
“Yes.”
Marisol gave Detective Ortiz a memory card she had hidden inside her shoe. She had removed it from the lining of a locker used by Kayla at the salon.
Before resigning, Kayla had accidentally left a key taped beneath her workstation. Marisol had found it after the police search and recognized the number as belonging to lockers at a nearby gym.
Inside Kayla’s locker was cash, false identification, several phones, and a small camera shaped like a decorative button.
There was also a photograph of Ava’s favorite doll.
Claire immediately called the officer guarding their house.
The doll remained inside Ava’s bedroom.
Police collected it and found a tiny camera behind one eye. It had recorded parts of Ava’s room for several weeks.
The camera had been installed during a repair. Claire remembered the doll’s arm becoming loose and Kayla offering to fix it while Ava waited for her haircut.
Kayla had returned it the following week.
Most recordings contained nothing useful. Ava slept, read, played, and talked to herself.
Then investigators found an audio file from three nights earlier.
Ava had apparently woken from a nightmare and carried the doll downstairs. Ethan and Claire were arguing in the kitchen about Evelyn’s estate.
The camera recorded their private conversation.
Claire had accused Diane of mishandling the trust. Ethan had said he was afraid someone wanted to make them appear unstable.
That conversation later appeared almost word for word in the fitness review.
A second recording captured something more important.
A woman had entered Ava’s room during Evelyn’s funeral reception.
The camera angle showed only the lower half of her body. She wore a dark dress and Evelyn’s gold ring.
She placed a document inside Ava’s bookshelf and whispered toward the doll.
“When she remembers M-17, begin Project Kinship.”
The recording was eight months old.
The Northbridge plan had begun the day Evelyn was buried.
Police searched the bookshelf.
Behind a row of children’s stories, they found a narrow envelope taped beneath a shelf.
Claire recognized Evelyn’s handwriting.
FOR AVA, WHEN THE BLUE DOOR OPENS.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed a much younger Evelyn standing beside another woman in front of a building with green shutters. Both wore white medical coats.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
NORTHBRIDGE CHILD DEVELOPMENT STUDY, 1997.
Claire would have been six years old in 1997.
The second woman was identified as Dr. Helena Voss, a behavioral researcher who disappeared in 2001.
Beside the photograph was a small key and a handwritten note.
Claire read it aloud.
“I made a terrible mistake when I believed Helena’s work could protect families. If Celeste has restarted the program, she will come for the records and for anyone connected to M-17. Do not trust the legal documents. Do not trust the voice. Find the door behind the classroom.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“What classroom?”
Ava, who had entered quietly with Naomi, answered.
“The one Mr. Bell said didn’t exist.”
Detective Ortiz received another urgent call.
A family-court petition had just been filed electronically by Jonathan Mercer.
It accused Claire and Ethan of exposing Ava to an active criminal investigation, failing to report concerning behavior, and interfering with professional treatment.
Attached were edited videos from the blue room, Ethan’s signed consent form, and the false fitness review.
A judge had approved an emergency hearing.
It would begin at nine the following morning.
The petition requested Ava’s immediate removal.
