SHOWED HER WHAT, AVA? / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Hearing at Nine

By morning, the evidence from the hidden classroom had changed the case.

Richard Bell was arrested at a motel outside the city. Kayla Dunn was detained while attempting to leave under another identity. The false federal agent was identified as Nathan Cole, a private security contractor employed by one of Mercer’s companies.

Jonathan Mercer still appeared in court.

He claimed his clients had been misunderstood and that the hidden classroom materials were historical research records unrelated to Ava’s welfare.

Margaret Vale stood beside Claire and Ethan.

Ava remained in a private room with Naomi and a court-appointed child specialist. She would not enter the courtroom unless necessary.

Judge Roland Pierce reviewed the new evidence in silence.

Mercer argued that Claire’s emotional reaction to learning about her adoption made her temporarily unstable.

Margaret responded calmly.

“Discovering a hidden family history does not make a parent unfit. Manufacturing false reports, secretly recording a child, and coaching that child to fear her parents does raise serious questions about every organization represented by Mr. Mercer.”

Mercer’s expression did not change.

“The recordings have not been authenticated.”

Detective Ortiz entered with a digital-forensics specialist who confirmed that the files came directly from Northbridge servers.

The specialist also demonstrated how the organization edited videos to create scenes of parents being arrested, shouting, or abandoning their children.

The video shown to Ava had used Ethan’s image from a company parking lot. His face was digitally placed onto an actor wearing a similar coat.

Judge Pierce suspended the emergency petition.

Mercer objected.

The judge ordered that Ava remain with Claire and Ethan under a voluntary safety plan while the criminal investigation continued.

For the first time since the salon, Claire felt she could breathe.

The judge then ordered Mercer to surrender all documents connected to the Harper trust and prohibited Dr. Wynn from contacting Ava.

Mercer stood.

“My client is not Dr. Wynn.”

The courtroom became still.

Margaret turned toward him.

“Who is your client?”

Mercer opened a folder.

“The woman seeking legal recognition as Ava’s maternal relative is Dr. Helena Voss.”

Claire’s hands went cold.

Mercer placed a document on the evidence screen.

It was a statement signed three days earlier.

I, Helena Voss, declare that Claire Hale was taken from me through fraudulent guardianship proceedings organized by Evelyn Harper. I further declare that Ava Hale is connected to the protected Maternal Response records and remains at risk while controlled by the Harper estate.

Judge Pierce removed his glasses.

“Where is Dr. Voss?”

“She will appear when her safety can be guaranteed.”

“Does she claim to be Ava’s grandmother?”

“Yes.”

Claire stood before Margaret could stop her.

“Then why did she terrorize my daughter?”

Mercer faced her.

“You are assuming Dr. Voss controlled Northbridge.”

“She was in the courtroom last night.”

“Do you have proof?”

“We saw her.”

“You saw a woman in a white coat on a compromised camera.”

He was right about one thing. The image did not clearly show a face.

Mercer continued.

“Dr. Voss claims Celeste Wynn copied her research, her identity, and her voice. She claims Evelyn Harper concealed the truth for twenty-five years.”

Margaret requested that Mercer’s claims be treated cautiously until Helena appeared in person.

The judge agreed.

As officers approached to question Mercer about the financial evidence, he remained strangely calm.

He placed a final envelope on the table.

“This was delivered to my office yesterday,” he said. “I was instructed to open it only if the Hale family stopped the guardianship petition.”

Inside was a recent photograph.

It showed Dr. Celeste Wynn entering an airport terminal.

She was accompanied by Marisol’s former employee Kayla before Kayla’s arrest.

Behind them walked a silver-haired woman.

The woman’s face was visible.

It was not Evelyn.

But the resemblance was extraordinary.

Claire knew without being told.

Helena Voss was alive.

On the back of the photograph, Helena had written:

CELESTE TOOK MY WORK.

May you like

EVELYN TOOK MY CHILD.

NOW SOMEONE HAS TAKEN MIA.
