The name Mia had appeared on the duplicate birth certificate found in the storage unit.

Until that moment, Claire had assumed it was another false document created to confuse Ava.

Now Helena Voss claimed Mia was a real person.

Detective Ortiz questioned Mercer for six hours. Faced with the server records, financial transfers, false evaluations, and statements from Richard Bell, he stopped pretending Northbridge was a legitimate program.

Mercer admitted that Dr. Celeste Wynn had recruited him twelve years earlier.

The organization targeted families connected to large estates, disputed inheritances, or vulnerable trusts. Northbridge created concerns, offered treatment, recorded families without permission, and used edited evidence to influence guardianship proceedings.

Mercer received legal fees.

Approved guardians gained access to trust distributions.

Dr. Wynn controlled the information.

But Mercer insisted Helena Voss had not been part of the modern operation.

“Celeste hated Helena,” he said. “She said Helena abandoned the original research and left her to face the consequences.”

“Why use Helena’s voice?” Ortiz asked.

“Because it frightened Evelyn.”

“Evelyn is dead.”

“Celeste began before she died.”

According to Mercer, Celeste had contacted Evelyn during her final illness. She threatened to expose the old Maternal Response Study unless Evelyn gave her access to the sealed records.

Evelyn refused.

Soon afterward, Evelyn secretly placed warnings inside Ava’s doll and bookshelf, hoping Claire would find them if Northbridge returned.

The gold ring had been copied to make Claire believe Evelyn or Helena was involved.

The familiar voice was generated from decades of recordings.

The “other mother” story had been used to destabilize Ava and confuse Claire.

Mercer also admitted that Celeste planned to place Ava with a cooperative guardian long enough to search the Harper trust for the original research identities.

The money was valuable.

The identities were more valuable.

Several former subjects had become judges, doctors, business owners, and public officials. Proof that they had been part of an unethical childhood study could be used for blackmail.

M-17 was Claire.

Ava was never a research subject.

She had been assigned Claire’s old code because Celeste believed Evelyn had hidden the master records somewhere inside Ava’s trust.

The concealed mark beneath Ava’s hair had come from an unauthorized monitoring patch used during the blue-room sessions. The finding was mild, but Marisol’s discovery had exposed the entire operation earlier than Celeste expected.

Police located Celeste at a private airport before she could leave the country.

She was arrested with encrypted drives, forged documents, and several identity files.

Richard Bell agreed to testify.

Kayla Dunn identified the properties used for the blue-room sessions.

The court employees connected to Mercer were suspended and investigated.

The three children already removed from their parents were returned under supervised reunification plans while their cases were reviewed.

Sophie Lane came back to Marisol’s salon with her mother two weeks later.

For the first time, the immediate danger was over.

Claire and Ethan gave complete statements about their mistakes. Ethan admitted that secrecy had allowed the scheme to continue. Claire admitted that anger could not replace communication.

They began family counseling with an independent specialist selected by Naomi.

Ava chose when to speak.

Nobody forced her.

On the evening Celeste was formally charged, Claire visited her at the detention center.

Celeste sat behind thick glass.

“You look like Helena,” she said.

“Where is she?”

“Watching.”

“Did she help you?”

Celeste smiled faintly.

“Helena has never helped anyone unless it served the study.”
