Chapter 7 - The Hearing of the Dead

The hearing began with a question no one in the courtroom could answer cleanly.
Who had legal authority to speak for Isabela Vale?
Tomas claimed he did. He produced a sealed mandate executed eight years earlier, biometric confirmations, and a chain of custody certified by three private banks. Daniel challenged every document. The judge ordered the originals examined while the attorneys argued over whether a dead woman could initiate a property claim through a conditional trust.
Sophia barely heard them.
She watched her father.
Tomas had aged into a harder version of the man she remembered. His shoulders had narrowed, but his eyes were the same dark brown as hers. When she was a child, he used to make paper birds at the kitchen table and hide coins beneath their wings. Now those same hands arranged documents designed to take her home.
The opposing claim was precise. The land beneath the mansion belonged to the Vale Continuity Trust. If the designated successor failed to preserve the family line, control reverted to the trust's founding guardian. Isabela's recorded death did not cancel a mandate activated before death.
Daniel stood. "The petitioner asks this court to recognize instructions from a person whose status cannot be verified, presented by an executor who was legally declared missing in another state. The purpose is not estate administration. It is coercion."
Tomas rose slowly.
"The purpose is the protection of two minor children."
The courtroom became still.
Sophia's nails pressed into her palm.
Daniel asked, "Which children?"
Tomas looked directly at Sophia.
"Valeria Vale and Lucía Serrano."
The name struck her like a physical blow.
The birth certificate in Tomas's folder had listed Lucía as Sophia's child.
The judge ordered the document handed over. Daniel read it, then passed it to Sophia.
Mother: Sofía Elena Serrano.
Father: Unlisted.
Child: Lucía Marisol Serrano.
Date of birth: five years and four months earlier.
Place of birth: Santa Aurelia Medical Reserve, Mallorca.
Sophia's vision blurred.
"I have never been to Mallorca," she said.
Tomas answered from across the aisle. "You were there for six weeks."
"No."
"You were sedated for most of them."
Alejandro stood from the gallery. "That is a lie."
The judge ordered him to sit.
Tomas continued. "Sophia was taken to Mallorca after a medical emergency. She delivered prematurely. The child survived. Isabela arranged for Sophia's memory to be altered and returned her to the United States."
Daniel objected, but the judge allowed Tomas to finish because the claim directly related to the trust's succession provisions.
Sophia felt as if she had left her body. A child had been born from her body, survived, and lived for five years under another name. Meanwhile, she had raised Valeria, Alejandro's biological daughter, without knowing the truth.
The judge asked Tomas why he had waited.
"Because disclosure was prohibited until the continuity trigger."
"What trigger?"
"The physical endangerment of either child inside trust property."
Sophia looked toward Alejandro.
Camila stepping on Valeria's hand had activated the system.
Tomas placed another document before the court. "The trust recognized the incident and opened a seventy-two-hour selection period. At its end, one child will be named successor. The other loses all protection."
"Protection from whom?" the judge asked.
Tomas hesitated.
That was the first crack in his control.
"From the founders," he said.
Daniel requested an immediate recess. In the private conference room, Sophia rounded on Tomas.
"Where is Lucía?"
"On Mallorca, unless she has been moved."
"Who has her?"
"Elena Cruz is her guardian."
"Isabela?"
"Not her real name."
Sophia slammed the birth certificate onto the table. "Then tell me her real name."
Tomas glanced at Daniel and the court marshal near the door. "Some truths cannot survive public record."
"My daughter may not survive your silence."
He flinched at the word daughter.
Sophia saw it and pressed harder. "You knew. You knew I had a child. You let me believe she was dead."
"I kept her alive."
"You abandoned me."
"I was taken from you."
"By whom?"
Tomas touched the black ring on his finger. "The Vale family did not begin with Isabela. She inherited a system older than the company. Children were paired, separated, tested. One raised inside privilege, one outside it. At adulthood, the stronger one inherited."
Daniel stared at him. "You are describing systematic child trafficking."
"I am describing what they called succession."
Sophia thought of the photographs in the underground archive, the hospital footage, the blood test.
"Was Camila one of the paired children?"
Tomas nodded once. "Camila and her sister."
"Who is her sister?"
He looked at Sophia.
A terrible possibility opened between them.
"No," Sophia said.
Tomas's voice softened. "Your mother."
Sophia stepped back.
Her mother, Elena Serrano, had died in a ferry accident when Sophia was eight. At least, that was what Tomas had told her.
"Elena Cruz," Sophia whispered.
"The woman raising Lucía."
The room seemed to contract.
"My mother is alive?"
"I believe so."
"Belief is not enough."
"It is all I have."
Daniel's phone rang. He answered, listened, and turned toward Sophia.
The emergency DNA comparison had returned. The sleeping girl in Camila's photograph could not be tested, but the old blood sample attached to Lucía's birth file matched Sophia with maternal certainty.
Lucía was real.
The judge reconvened and issued a temporary ruling. Sophia retained possession of the mansion and sole authority over household systems. The continuity trust was barred from transferring assets for thirty days. Federal marshals were authorized to secure the underground archive.
It was a victory.
It did not feel like one.
As they left the courthouse, Tomas was taken into protective custody for questioning. Before entering the vehicle, he caught Sophia's eye.
"The selection is not about money," he said.
"What is it about?"
"The house will ask you to choose which girl is yours."
"They are both mine."
Tomas gave a sad, frightened smile.
"That answer is why Isabela chose you."
Sophia's phone vibrated.
A live video opened without her touching the screen.
Valeria sat in the Halcyon suite beside Daniel's wife, safe and unaware.
The image switched.
Lucía stood in the Mediterranean garden, holding a white paper bird.
A woman's voice spoke from behind the camera.
"Forty-eight hours, Sophia. Come to Mallorca alone, or the girls meet under circumstances you will not control."
The feed ended.
