Chapter 1 - The Red Heel

Camila's red heel pressed down harder.

Valeria's fingers were spread against the white marble, tiny and trembling beneath the pointed shoe. Around them, silver balloons bobbed near the ceiling, and a banner that read HAPPY BIRTHDAY VALERIA hung crookedly above the fireplace. The cake had not been cut. The candles had burned down to stubs. Half the guests had already left after Camila announced that the party was over because the birthday girl had become "ungrateful."

Valeria's sobs came in broken gasps.

"Keep scrubbing," Camila said, lifting her wine glass toward the child as though making a toast. "That's what spoiled brats deserve."

The front door opened.

Sophia stood in the entryway with one hand around the handle of a suitcase. For half a second, she could not understand what she was seeing. She had spent twelve hours on planes and in airport terminals after receiving a strange voice message from her daughter. In the message, Valeria had whispered, "Mommy, please come home before Aunt Camila changes the locks."

Now Sophia saw the balloon fragments. The toppled gift bags. The smear of frosting across the marble. And Camila's shoe on her daughter's hand.

The suitcase hit the floor.

Sophia crossed the room so quickly that Camila barely had time to turn. She shoved the red heel aside, lifted Valeria into her arms, and held the child against her chest.

"Take your shoe off my daughter!" Sophia shouted.

Camila staggered back, wine sloshing over the rim of her glass. Then her shock melted into a lazy smile.

"You don't own this house anymore."

Valeria buried her face in Sophia's neck. Her right hand was already swelling.

Sophia felt something inside her become perfectly still.

The door opened again.

Alejandro walked in wearing the charcoal suit Sophia had bought him for his first major investor dinner. He froze when he saw her. For one breath, Sophia thought he would rush toward Valeria. Thought he would see the bruised fingers and the tears and remember that he was a father.

Instead, he crossed the room to Camila.

"Are you okay, sweetheart?" he asked, wrapping one arm around her waist.

Camila leaned into him, triumphant.

Valeria watched over Sophia's shoulder. The child's face crumpled in a way Sophia would remember for the rest of her life.

Sophia looked at her husband.

"So," she said. "You chose."

Alejandro's expression hardened. "You disappeared for three weeks. Camila has been helping with the house and the company. You can't come back and start making accusations."

"I was in Singapore closing the Hale acquisition. The deal you begged me to save."

"The board no longer answers to you."

Camila raised her glass again. "Neither does your family."

Sophia lowered Valeria gently onto the sofa, then reached into her coat and took out her phone. Her thumb hovered over a black square marked VESPER CONTROL.

Alejandro laughed. "What are you going to do? Call your lawyer?"

Sophia pressed one button.

A soft chime sounded through the house.

Alejandro's phone vibrated. Then Camila's.

Both looked down.

OWNERSHIP ACCESS REVOKED.

The smile left Camila's face.

The front doors locked with a heavy mechanical click. The lights shifted to emergency mode. Somewhere beneath the marble, the security system began sealing private offices, safes, and vehicle bays.

Sophia looked directly at them.

"Now," she said, "get out of my house."

Alejandro stared at the message. "This is a glitch."

"No. The glitch was trusting you."

He tried the Vesper app on his phone. A red screen appeared.

USER REMOVED BY PRIMARY OWNER.

Camila's face went pale. "Primary owner?"

Sophia turned to the wall panel and placed her palm against it. The system recognized her immediately.

"Welcome home, Sophia Vale," a calm voice said. "Would you like to initiate household expulsion protocol?"

Alejandro stepped forward. "Don't do this in front of Valeria."

Sophia glanced at her daughter's injured hand.

"You already did."

Before she could answer the system, the chandelier flickered. The wall panel went black. A low warning tone rolled through the house.

Then another message appeared on Sophia's phone.

PRIMARY OWNERSHIP CONTESTED.

A second line followed.

CLAIMANT IDENTIFIED: ISABELA VALE.

Sophia stopped breathing.

May you like

Isabela Vale was Alejandro's mother.

She had been dead for seven years.
