Chapter 10 - The Woman Wearing Camila's Face

The facial analysis began with the birthday footage.

Daniel's forensic team compared Camila's movements across six years of photographs, security videos, and public appearances. At first, nothing seemed wrong. The same height. The same smile. The same habit of touching the stem of a wine glass with her little finger extended.

Then a movement specialist found the break.

Eighteen months earlier, Camila had injured her left ankle in a skiing accident. Afterward, she walked with a faint outward turn of the foot. The woman at Valeria's birthday did not.

Dental records revealed another difference. Camila had a porcelain crown on her upper right molar. In a frame where the birthday woman laughed, the tooth was natural.

Someone had worn Camila's face.

Sophia watched the enhanced video again. The disguise was not a simple mask. It was surgical-quality silicone supported by makeup, altered hairline, contact lenses, and a voice model delivered through a tiny device at the throat.

"How long could someone maintain that?" she asked.

"For hours," the specialist said. "Possibly days with help."

Alejandro sat across the conference room, looking sick. "I kissed her."

Sophia did not comfort him.

The real Camila's location became urgent. Police retraced the last verified sighting: a charity gala twelve days before the birthday. After that, every appearance was uncertain.

A search of the guest suite uncovered blood beneath the bathroom baseboard. DNA matched Camila. The amount was small but recent.

Valeria refused to sleep unless Lucía was beside her. The girls whispered in Spanish after lights out, reconstructing memories adults had tried to erase. They remembered a song played backward, a red door, and a woman who changed wigs but never rings.

The ring was black and square.

Tomas wore one.

So had the masked man in the villa, according to Lucía.

When federal investigators questioned Tomas, he admitted the ring identified members of the Continuity Circle. He insisted he had joined only to remain close to Elena and the children.

"Everyone says they cooperated to protect someone," Sophia told him through the glass wall of the interview room. "Yet children kept disappearing."

Tomas looked older under fluorescent light.

"I thought I could damage the system from within."

"Did you?"

"I delayed the selection for five years."

"By helping them falsify my memories?"

His eyes dropped. "Yes."

Sophia placed both palms on the table. "Who is wearing Camila's face?"

"I do not know."

"Who could?"

"Mara trained substitutes. Women chosen for bone structure, posture, language. Sometimes surgery. Sometimes temporary prosthetics."

"How many?"

"At least four when I left."

"Is Camila one of the substitutes?"

Tomas looked up. "Camila was born into the Circle. Her mother was Elena's twin."

Sophia absorbed that carefully. "So Camila is my cousin."

"Yes."

"And Valeria's mitochondrial connection to Camila comes through that maternal line."

"Yes."

"Then who gave birth to Valeria?"

Tomas hesitated.

Sophia saw fear in him again.

"Say it."

"Elena."

The room became silent.

"My mother gave birth to my husband's child?"

"The embryo was created from Alejandro and a donor. Elena carried it under coercion. Mara wanted the child connected to both families by loyalty, if not by full blood."

Sophia recoiled.

Valeria was biologically Alejandro's daughter, carried by Sophia's mother, raised by Sophia, and used as one half of an experiment against Sophia's biological child.

The design was monstrous in its precision.

"Did Elena consent?"

"No."

"Did Alejandro know?"

"Not then."

Sophia thought of all the times Isabela had called Valeria a family miracle.

Tomas continued. "Mara believed motherhood could be engineered. She wanted to know which bond would prove strongest: blood without memory, or memory without blood."

"She turned us into a study."

"She turned everyone into evidence for her belief."

A federal investigator entered and handed Sophia a printed message intercepted from the mansion's internal network.

RETURN BOTH HEIRS TO FOUNDATION HOUSE.

FAILURE WILL RESULT IN MATERNAL CORRECTION.

Below it was a photograph of Elena seated in a metal chair. Beside her lay the real Camila, unconscious but alive.

A timestamp showed the image had been captured ten minutes earlier.

The background contained shelves of antique clocks.

Alejandro recognized the room.

"Foundation House," he said. "My mother held board retreats there when I was a child."

The property stood outside the city, officially abandoned after a fire. Records showed it had been demolished.

Satellite images showed an empty field.

Daniel ordered ground-penetrating scans.

They revealed a structure beneath it.

Sophia assembled a rescue plan with federal agents, but the message demanded the girls. She had no intention of delivering them. Instead, technicians built two wearable transmitters and created heat signatures to suggest children were inside the approaching vehicle.

Before leaving, Sophia found Valeria and Lucía awake in bed.

Lucía held out the wooden horse from Mallorca. A seam along its belly had opened.

Inside was a tiny roll of film.

Daniel developed it.

The images showed Mara Velez without disguise, standing beside Isabela Vale's grave. In another frame, Mara spoke to a much younger Alejandro. In the final image, she held two newborns while Elena stood behind her in a hospital gown.

On the back of the last frame, Elena had written:

Only one child in this photograph belongs to the man they call Alejandro.

Sophia looked at the babies.

One was Lucía.

The other was Valeria.

The paternity test had said Valeria belonged to Alejandro.

That left Lucía.

Sophia's biological daughter had another father.

And judging from Elena's warning, his identity was the reason Mara had kept her alive.
