Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Red Dress

Emergency lights guided Sophia and Alejandro up the staircase.
The moment they reached the library, Sophia turned and slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Alejandro did not raise a hand to defend himself. He stood with his face turned to one side, breathing slowly.
"You knew Camila before I met you," Sophia said.
He looked back at her. "Yes."
"How long?"
"Since childhood."
"And you never thought that mattered?"
"Our families were connected. That is all."
"She may be Valeria's biological mother."
"The archive could be lying."
"It knew the date of Valeria's birth. It had hospital footage. It had our blood."
"It may have stored old samples."
Sophia stepped close enough that he could see the fury in her eyes. "Every answer you give creates another secret."
Alejandro lowered his voice. "Then ask the question you are afraid to ask."
She hated him for knowing there was one.
"Did you sleep with Camila?"
His silence lasted only a second, but it was enough.
"Before us," he said. "Years before us."
"Did you sleep with her after we married?"
"No."
"Did you sleep with her while I was in Singapore?"
"No."
"Did you let her believe she could replace me?"
His jaw tightened. "I let her believe whatever kept her cooperative."
Sophia stared at him. "Cooperative with what?"
Before he answered, footsteps approached the library. Daniel entered with two police detectives and a forensic technician. Sophia had triggered a silent emergency alert from inside the archive, and the nearest unit had been dispatched.
The detectives separated them.
Sophia gave her statement in the morning room while technicians photographed the hidden staircase. When they descended, they found the chamber empty. The cabinets, monitors, ledger, and printer had vanished behind smooth steel walls.
Only the blood wells remained.
Daniel listened without interrupting as Sophia described the test result.
"We need an independent DNA analysis," he said.
"Immediately."
"And we need Camila."
The police had already visited the apartment listed on Camila's identification. It was vacant. Her car had been abandoned near the river with the keys inside.
At noon, Sophia returned to the Halcyon. Valeria was awake, coloring with her left hand. She smiled when Sophia entered, and the sight nearly broke her.
"Did you make Aunt Camila leave?" Valeria asked.
"She is gone for now."
"And Daddy?"
Sophia sat beside her. "Daddy has many things to explain."
Valeria studied the purple marker in her hand. "Aunt Camila said she was my first mommy."
Sophia's pulse jumped. "When did she say that?"
"Yesterday. She said you borrowed me."
Daniel, standing near the door, went still.
Sophia kept her voice soft. "What else did she say?"
"She said Grandma picked you because you were smart and lonely. She said lonely girls hold on tighter."
The cruelty of the sentence felt too precise to be invented by a child.
Sophia drew Valeria into her arms. "You are my daughter. Nothing changes that."
"Even if she says I came from her tummy?"
"Even then."
That afternoon, a court granted Sophia temporary sole custody and a protective order against Camila. Alejandro did not oppose the custody request, but his attorney challenged the order barring him from the house. The judge left the property issue for the emergency ownership hearing scheduled in forty-eight hours.
Daniel arranged for a private laboratory to collect samples from Sophia and Valeria. Alejandro voluntarily submitted one as well.
While they waited, Sophia reviewed every photograph from Valeria's birth. In one image, she held the newborn against her chest while Alejandro stood beside the bed. In the background, a nurse in green scrubs faced away from the camera.
Daniel enlarged the nurse's reflection in a metal cabinet.
The woman wore a red dress beneath the open scrub gown.
Camila had worn a red dress the first night Sophia met her.
Sophia remembered that dinner with painful clarity. Isabela had introduced Camila as the daughter of an old family friend. Camila had smiled too warmly at Alejandro and asked Sophia whether she believed love could survive inherited obligations.
At the time, Sophia thought it was a philosophical question.
Now it sounded like a warning.
Daniel traced Camila's history. Her birth records were sealed. Her university records began abruptly at age nineteen. Before that, she appeared only in private Vale Foundation school files. Isabela had paid every tuition bill.
At six that evening, the DNA laboratory called.
Sophia put the phone on speaker.
"The child is not your biological daughter," the geneticist said carefully. "The paternal match to Mr. Vale is conclusive."
Sophia closed her eyes.
"And Camila?" Daniel asked.
"We tested a sample obtained from a hairbrush collected under warrant from the mansion guest suite. Camila Ortega is not the child's biological mother."
Sophia opened her eyes.
"But the archive said she was."
The geneticist hesitated. "There is another finding. The child's mitochondrial profile indicates a close maternal-line relationship to Ms. Ortega. Most likely aunt, half-sister, or grandmother, depending on age and pedigree."
Daniel looked at Sophia.
"Can you identify the mother?"
"Not from the current samples."
Sophia's phone lit up with an incoming video call from an unknown number.
She answered.
Camila appeared on the screen wearing a red dress. Behind her was the same Mediterranean garden shown in the photograph.
"You chose my name," Camila said. "That was clever."
"Where is Isabela?"
Camila smiled.
"Ask where your real daughter is."
The call ended.
A photograph arrived seconds later.
It showed a little girl sleeping in an unfamiliar bedroom.

She was about five years old.
Near her left ear was a crescent-shaped birthmark identical to Valeria's.
