Chapter 12 - The Lie Inside the Blood

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Sophia understood what Tomas's words seemed to mean, and horror rose so quickly that she nearly lost her balance.

Mara laughed.

"Not in the way you fear," Tomas said immediately. "Sophia, listen to me. Lucía was created from your egg and a donor sample taken from me before you were born. They used preserved cells, altered and screened. I did not know until years later."

The explanation was still monstrous, but different from the first terror.

Sophia stared at him. "Why would anyone do that?"

"To concentrate a genetic line the Circle considered valuable."

Elena leaned against the wall, weak but furious. "They called it restoration."

Mara kept the gun at Tomas's back. "And it worked. Lucía carries the Serrano memory markers more strongly than any child in three generations."

"Memory is not inherited like a bank account," Sophia said.

"Not memory itself. Sensitivity. Pattern retention. Emotional imprinting. Your family has always produced unusual recall under trauma."

Sophia thought of the gaps in her own mind, and the flashes that returned with smells, music, and certain rooms. The Circle had treated her nervous system as property.

Federal agents moved in the corridor beyond the strobes. Mara heard them and pulled Tomas toward the clock-door.

"Let him go," Sophia said.

"Bring the girls to the mansion before sunrise."

"No."

Mara smiled. "Then the house will choose without them."

She fired into the ceiling. Dust and sparks filled the tunnel. Tomas struck her arm. The gun discharged again.

Camila screamed.

When the smoke cleared, Mara was gone.

Tomas lay on the floor with blood spreading across his side.

Sophia dropped beside him. The wound was high but not immediately fatal. Agents rushed in, applied pressure, and carried him toward the exit.

Elena watched him go with an expression Sophia could not read.

"You loved him," Sophia said.

"I still do."

"Then why did he leave me?"

"He did not choose to. Mara threatened you. We agreed one of us would remain inside the Circle and one would disappear. Tomas stayed close to their records. I stayed close to the children."

Sophia looked toward the passage where Mara had vanished.

"Everyone made decisions around me."

"Yes."

"Everyone called it protection."

"Yes."

"And every decision cost me years."

Elena lowered her eyes. "Yes."

It was the first honest answer Sophia had received without defense.

Outside, dawn began to lighten the field. Camila was placed in an ambulance under guard. Before the doors closed, she reached for Sophia.

"I am sorry about Valeria."

"You helped create the situation that put her under that shoe."

"I know."

"Sorry does not erase that."

"I know that too."

Sophia pulled her hand away but did not turn from her. "Tell the truth in court. All of it."

Camila nodded.

At the hospital, Tomas underwent surgery. Elena gave a full statement. Federal teams catalogued Foundation House and found records connected to nineteen children, six false deaths, and four identity substitutions across three decades.

The discovery was enormous.

It also came too late to stop the countdown.

At 6:12 a.m., every device connected to Vale Meridian received the same message.

SUCCESSION REVIEW COMMENCING AT PRIMARY RESIDENCE.

Sophia called the secure residence.

No answer.

She called again.

Daniel's wife answered on the third attempt, breathless.

"The girls are here, but the house system has reached us. Every screen is showing the mansion."

In the background, Sophia heard Valeria say, "Mommy's house is calling."

Sophia drove back with Daniel and two federal vehicles. Alejandro met them at the gate. He had been released from questioning but remained under investigation.

The mansion looked unchanged from outside.

Inside, every door stood open.

The underground archive entrance had expanded. Instead of a narrow staircase, a wide ramp descended beneath the library, illuminated by white lights.

Valeria and Lucía arrived under federal escort because the system had begun broadcasting their location to unknown receivers. Keeping them away had become more dangerous than bringing them into a controlled perimeter.

Sophia hated the decision, but she stayed between the girls and every doorway.

At the bottom of the ramp, the archive chamber had transformed. The steel walls were gone. A circular room extended beneath the entire central wing of the house.

Two chairs stood in the center.

Above one was Valeria's name.

Above the other was Lucía's.

A screen displayed a final instruction.

PRIMARY MOTHER MUST DESIGNATE ONE HEIR.

Alejandro entered behind Sophia. "Do not touch anything."

The house spoke.

"Designation window: sixty minutes."

Sophia looked up at the cameras.

"No."

"Failure to designate will release all protected identities and locations."

Daniel swore softly. The archive contained witnesses, children, and people still hidden from the Circle. A full release could expose them to danger.

Mara's voice came through the speakers.

"You wanted every secret brought into the light, Sophia. Choose no one, and you shall have your wish."

Valeria squeezed Sophia's hand.

Lucía took the other.

Sophia looked at both girls.

Then she noticed something beneath the two chairs.

May you like

A third biometric plate.

It had no name.
