Chapter 24 - The Dead BeneficiaryOwen sat in a federal detention facility awaiting trial.

Alive.

Very much alive.

The death certificate belonged to his original identity.

Before becoming Owen Vale.

His birth name was Matthew Crane.

Nathaniel Crane’s younger brother.

The revelation broke several assumptions at once.

Owen had not merely joined Gabriel’s network for money.

He had been raised inside it.

Adrian adopted him into the extended Vale family under instructions from Gabriel.

Daniel stared at the file.

“My cousin was a placement child?”

“Not exactly,” Mara said.

“He was both subject and handler.”

Owen had learned the truth at nineteen.

Instead of resisting, he embraced the system.

Crown Group gave him status.

Money.

Access.

A family name more powerful than the one he lost.

He eventually became one of its most loyal defenders.

Elena remembered the opening night.

Owen had manipulated the camera timing.

He had turned Vanessa’s private cruelty into public spectacle.

At the time it looked like part of an exposure plan.

Now they understood.

He had wanted chaos.

If Elena was arrested, Vanessa discredited, Daniel destabilized, and the envelope lost, Crown Group could survive.

Elena went to see him.

Owen smiled through the glass.

“The maid.”

“Elena.”

“I know your name.”

“Then use it.”

His smile widened.

“You’ve become confident.”

“I always was. You just met me while forty rich people were watching me get slapped.”

That erased his smile.

Elena placed the Crown charter against the glass.

“You’re the eighth vote.”

Owen glanced at it.

“So?”

“We need your consent.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard the proposal.”

“I don’t need to.”

“Why?”

“Because Crown Group is mine.”

There it was.

Not Gabriel’s philosophy.

Not Clara’s rage.

Entitlement.

Owen leaned closer.

“Do you understand what those holdings are worth?”

“Yes.”

“No, you don’t.”

He whispered the number.

Thirty-eight billion dollars.

Not including political influence.

Real estate.

Patents.

Private foundations.

Data archives.

Elena stared at him.

“You’re willing to preserve child trafficking for money?”

“I’m willing to preserve what belongs to us.”

“Us?”

“The Crown children.”

“You mean victims.”

“I mean owners.”

Elena almost felt pity.

“You really believe they compensated you.”

“They gave us the empire.”

“They built the empire using you.”

“Semantics.”

“No.”

Elena leaned toward the glass.

“That difference is the whole story.”

Owen refused.

Without him, the transfer could not reach unanimous beneficiary assignment.

Daniel searched for another mechanism.

Nothing.

Clara suggested forging Owen’s authorization.

Elena refused.

Clara exploded.

“He helped destroy lives!”

“Then prosecute him.”

“He does not deserve a vote.”

“If we begin deciding which victims deserve control of identities tied to them, we rebuild the same machine.”

“He is not only a victim.”

“I know.”

Clara paced.

“He will kill the plan.”

“Then we find another legal route.”

“There isn’t one.”

“There is.”

“You keep saying that!”

“Because every person before us accepted the choice they were given.”

Elena stood.

“Gabriel said obey or suffer. Adrian said violate one person to save many. Vanessa said humiliate one maid to protect herself. You said endanger children to expose families.”

Clara stared at her.

“And Owen says preserve evil or lose the fortune.”

Elena shook her head.

“I reject his choice too.”

Clara laughed bitterly.

“With what?”

Elena looked toward Daniel.

“The diamonds.”

Daniel frowned.

“What diamonds?”

May you like

Elena smiled.

“The necklace that started all of this.”
