Chapter 12 - The First Child of Room Nine

They found Isabel through a chain of medical purchases made under false charitable accounts. She had rented a lakeside rehabilitation center that closed during the winter. Mara approached with caution, expecting guards.

The gates opened before they arrived.

Inside, every corridor was illuminated. A dining table had been set for eight. Isabel sat at its head wearing a dark green dress, her white hair cut sharply at the chin. She looked more like Margaret than Gabriel, but her eyes carried none of Margaret’s restraint.

“I wondered which of you would reach me first,” she said.

Elena remained standing. “Did you kill Dr. Wren?”

“Yes.”

The simple answer silenced the room.

Isabel explained that Wren had managed the confinement clinics for thirty years. He participated in Lucia’s abduction and the falsification of Catherine’s death. When he prepared to transfer Lucia again, Isabel killed him.

“And framed my mother,” Elena said.

“I staged the scene so the police would preserve it. Without scandal, Wren’s death would have been buried as a medical accident.”

“You made her look guilty.”

“For eleven minutes. Long enough to force a forensic examination.”

Elena understood the logic and hated it. Everyone in the network justified cruelty as strategy. Adrian hid evidence inside a baby. Catherine turned Elena into a biometric trigger. Vanessa staged theft. Isabel staged murder. Each believed the final truth would cleanse the method.

“It does not,” Elena said.

Isabel studied her. “Good. You are less obedient than Adrian hoped.”

Daniel asked why the archive required Isabel’s key.

“Because I designed the original placement system,” she replied.

Gabriel had not invented Room Nine alone. As a child, Isabel possessed an extraordinary memory and a fascination with codes. Gabriel manipulated her into helping him catalog family profiles and create replacement identities. She believed they were rescuing children from dangerous homes. When she discovered that money changed hands, she threatened to expose him.

Gabriel erased her instead.

Adrian eventually found her but did not restore her identity. He feared scandal and used her knowledge to build the archive. Isabel spent her life gathering evidence while pretending to be dead.

“Why help Owen?” Daniel asked.

“I did not help him. I let him believe he had found me.”

The voice on Vanessa’s recording had been deliberate bait. Isabel wanted Owen and Rusk to bring their network into the open.

She placed her hand on the external reader while Elena stood beside her. The capsule activated. Files began decrypting across the terminal.

Names appeared. Payments. Ship manifests. Adoption orders. Medical reports. Audio recordings. Judges approving sealed files. Executives purchasing heirs. Families threatened into silence.

Then the Crown Group list opened.

There were nine names.

Vanessa was one.

Daniel was not.

Elena was.

Her childhood had not merely been protected by Adrian. She had been classified as part of the final experiment.

Lucia began to cry. “I never knew.”

Isabel opened a second record.

Elena had a twin sister.

The birth file showed two female infants delivered at Saint Catherine’s Clinic. Lucia had been told one died. The surviving twin was transferred through Room Nine under the name Clara Bell.

Catherine stepped backward.

“Bell?” Daniel said.

Catherine looked at the photograph on-screen.

Clara had been given to her before Daniel.

She raised the girl for four years. Gabriel took Clara away after Catherine discovered illegal adoption records. He told Catherine the child died of pneumonia.

The archive listed Clara as alive.

Current identity: Mara Quinn.

Everyone turned toward the detective.

Mara stood frozen near the door.

Elena searched her face and saw what she had never looked for: the same curve of the mouth, the same dark eyes, the same small notch in the left eyebrow.

Mara whispered, “I had no idea.”

Before anyone could move, every light in the center turned red.

A message filled the terminal.

ARCHIVE EXTRACTION COMPLETE.

REMOTE RECIPIENT VERIFIED.

Isabel’s composure broke for the first time.

“I did not authorize a recipient.”

The files had been copied somewhere outside the building.

Then a video window opened.

Owen appeared on-screen from the control room at Vale House.

Behind him, Margaret sat tied to a chair.

“Thank you,” he said. “You finally opened everything for me.”
