Chapter 11 - The Trial Before the Arrest
Rusk gave them five minutes to surrender.
Catherine used four of them to evacuate the refuge through tunnels leading into the forest. Daniel wanted to remain with her, but she ordered him to protect Elena.
“They need her alive until the archive opens,” Catherine said. “After that, no one is safe.”
Mara contacted them through an encrypted radio. She had been removed from command after Rusk accused her of contaminating evidence and conspiring with the Vale family. Officers loyal to her were being detained.
“I can delay the outer team,” she said, “but Rusk brought private contractors. They are not here to make arrests.”
Elena stood before the archive reader. The machine resembled a medical scanner connected to an old computer terminal. When it detected the capsule beneath her skin, lines of code filled the screen.
A prompt appeared.
SECOND KEY REQUIRED.
Catherine looked at Daniel.
Adrian had divided control between Elena and the final child placed through Room Nine. Daniel placed his hand on the scanner. The system rejected him.
NOT VERIFIED.
Daniel laughed once, without humor. “Even his confession may have been another lie.”
Vanessa’s name surfaced in Catherine’s notes. She had been Subject 17, but the Room Nine ledger referred to a Final Child whose number was never recorded. Elena remembered the child’s drawing beneath the table: Vanessa with the necklace, Lucia with the key, and the faceless third girl.
Not Daniel.
A girl.
Gunfire began outside.
Rusk’s contractors breached the chapel while Catherine led Daniel and Elena toward the northern tunnel. Lucia remained at the terminal, searching Adrian’s files for another biometric match.
She found one.
The second key belonged to a woman named Isabel Vale.
Daniel had never heard the name.
Catherine had.
“Gabriel’s younger sister,” she said. “Declared dead at age eight.”
Margaret had given birth to two children, Gabriel and Isabel. Family histories said Isabel drowned during a holiday. In truth, Adrian discovered that Gabriel had used his own sister as the first test of the placement system. He erased her identity and sent her to another family to prove a child could disappear completely.
Isabel would now be seventy-four.
Lucia enlarged a scanned fingerprint record.
Elena recognized the pattern from documents at Saint Orison. Dr. Wren’s administrative assistant, an elderly woman who had vanished after his murder, had signed medication logs with the same print.
Her name at the clinic was Helen Ward.
Rusk’s men reached the lower corridor. Catherine triggered steel doors, sealing them temporarily. Mara appeared on a side monitor, moving through the trees with three officers.
“Go,” she ordered. “I will get you to the northern road.”
They escaped through the tunnel seconds before contractors entered the archive room. Lucia carried the external reader. Elena carried the drive containing the partial files. Daniel supported Catherine along the forest path.
At the northern road, an unmarked ambulance waited. Mara drove while gunfire struck the rear doors. They crossed into another county before Rusk’s convoy regrouped.
News reports appeared within the hour.
Elena’s photograph led every broadcast. She was described as an undocumented domestic worker who murdered a doctor, stole valuable jewelry, and manipulated Daniel Vale into abducting his elderly grandmother. Vanessa’s planted necklace had become the foundation for a national lie.
Daniel’s corporate board suspended him. Vale Maritime shares collapsed. Rusk announced a public manhunt.
The world had held Elena guilty once in a foyer. Now it held her guilty from millions of screens.
Mara drove them to an unused veterinary clinic owned by a retired officer. Vanessa, released secretly from the hospital by one of Catherine’s contacts, met them there with her shoulder bandaged.
Elena watched her enter and felt old rage rise.
Vanessa placed a phone on the table. “Before you decide whether to throw me out, listen.”
The recording captured Owen and Rusk discussing the convent raid.
Rusk said, “Once the maid opens the archive, kill everyone except Isabel.”
Owen replied, “And if she refuses?”
“Use her mother.”
A third voice entered the conversation.
An elderly woman said, “You will not touch Elena until she remembers me.”
Lucia gripped the table.
She knew the voice.
“Helen Ward,” she whispered.

Then she corrected herself.
“Isabel Vale.”
