Chapter 10 - The Convent of Missing Children

The convent stood beyond an abandoned railway crossing where the road narrowed between forests and old stone walls. Its chapel roof had collapsed years earlier, and weeds grew through the courtyard. Official records said the property had been vacant for fifteen years.

Someone had replaced the locks last week.

Daniel did not go alone. Mara concealed officers along the road, while Elena and Lucia entered through an underground drainage tunnel shown on one of Margaret’s maps. Daniel walked through the front gate carrying Catherine’s letter and no visible weapon.

Inside the chapel, candles burned beneath a cracked mural. A woman sat at the first pew with her back to him.

“Mother?” Daniel said.

She turned slowly.

Catherine Bell was in her sixties. A pale burn scar crossed her right hand, and one leg moved stiffly when she stood. Daniel recognized nothing in her face and everything in the way she looked at him.

“You still tilt your head when you are frightened,” she said.

He had prepared accusations. None survived the sound of her voice.

Catherine touched his cheek, then lowered her hand before he could decide whether to accept it. “I am sorry.”

“For leaving?”

“For failing to take you with me.”

She led him beneath the chapel through a concealed stairwell. The lower level was not a prison. It was a refuge. Rooms held medical beds, schoolbooks, winter clothes, and photographs of adults and children. Seven people were currently staying there, all survivors connected to the Room Nine network.

Catherine had built an underground rescue operation with former nurses, drivers, and clerks who once worked for Gabriel. They moved threatened witnesses, reconstructed identities, and collected evidence.

“Why hide from the police?” Daniel asked.

“Because Gabriel owned police commissioners, judges, and ministers. Some are retired. Their children are not.”

Catherine showed him a wall covered with names. Several belonged to people Daniel considered friends. One was the attorney who managed the Vale family trust. Another was Mara’s deputy chief.

Daniel understood why Mara had avoided involving a larger task force.

“Did you give Elena the handbag?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Did you know Vanessa would frame her?”

“I knew Vanessa planned to use the necklace as bait. I warned her not to humiliate Elena publicly. Owen changed the schedule and encouraged her anger. Vanessa chose to follow it.”

Catherine did not soften the truth to protect anyone.

She had placed the hidden phone in the bag and programmed the camera system to recognize Elena’s face. Adrian’s archive key was not only beneath Elena’s skin. Her biometric profile activated encrypted systems designed decades earlier.

“That is why the monitor turned on,” Daniel said.

“Yes. Elena did not merely carry the key. She was the key.”

Lucia and Elena entered the refuge through the drainage passage. Mother and daughter had barely spoken since Saint Orison. Elena had too many versions of Lucia to reconcile: loving parent, vanished victim, keeper of secrets, participant in Adrian’s plan.

Catherine faced Lucia with visible shame. “I should have found you sooner.”

“You found the others,” Lucia replied.

“Not all.”

Catherine revealed that nine missing children had been transferred out of Room Nine shortly before the warehouse fire. Gabriel called them the Crown Group. They were selected for unusual intelligence, memory, or social adaptability. Daniel had been one of them. Vanessa may have been another.

The final identities were encoded in the archive Elena could unlock.

They prepared to remove the data capsule surgically, but Elena refused.

“No one cuts another secret out of my body until I know what it will release.”

Catherine respected the decision. She showed Elena Adrian’s protocol: the capsule could be read externally with a device stored beneath the convent.

As they reached the equipment room, the chapel bell rang above them.

It had no rope.

Catherine looked at the security monitor. A convoy of black vehicles had surrounded the convent.

At its center stood Owen.

Beside him was Deputy Chief Simon Rusk, Mara’s superior.

Rusk raised a loudspeaker.

“Detective Quinn has been suspended. Daniel Vale is wanted for kidnapping, and Elena Ruiz is wanted for the murder of Dr. Elias Wren.”

Elena stared at the screen.

The staged evidence had moved again.

This time, it had reached the law.
