Chapter 13 - The Broadcast from Vale House

Owen did not ask for money.

He asked for legitimacy.

From the control room at Vale House, he announced that the complete archive would be released to the highest levels of government unless Daniel publicly recognized him as Gabriel Vale’s biological heir and transferred control of the company. He demanded immunity for himself and Margaret’s safe passage out of the country.

Margaret laughed despite the cord around her wrists.

“You still believe the company is the prize,” she said.

Owen struck her, and Daniel lunged toward the screen as if distance could be broken by rage.

The copied archive was encrypted. Owen possessed the files but could not read most of them without Isabel’s living biometric confirmation. He had captured Margaret because he believed she knew a bypass.

Isabel did know one.

She refused to reveal it.

Mara wanted to alert federal authorities, but the archive identified senior officials who might warn Owen. Elena proposed a different approach: use the same weapon that began everything.

Public humiliation.

Vanessa had framed Elena in front of forty people because a private accusation could be buried. Owen now relied on secrecy, bargaining with powerful people one by one. If they forced him into a public broadcast, no single official could contain the evidence.

Daniel contacted the Vale Maritime board and agreed to Owen’s demand on one condition: the transfer would occur live at Vale House before shareholders, journalists, and financial regulators. He pretended that scandal had broken him.

Owen accepted because vanity was the only inheritance Gabriel had given both sons.

The foyer was restored for the event. The broken windows were boarded, the chandelier relit, and the brown handbag placed on the same marble table as a reminder. Reporters crowded behind barriers. Board members whispered about Daniel’s collapse. Rusk attended in uniform, presenting himself as the officer who would guarantee order.

Elena entered through the staff corridor wearing the same housekeeper uniform she wore on the night of the accusation.

Vanessa watched from an upstairs room, her arm in a sling. She had agreed to testify, knowing she could face charges for assault, evidence tampering, and false accusation. Lucia and Catherine remained with Isabel at the lakeside center, preparing the archive for release. Mara moved through the crowd under a false press credential because Rusk still controlled the official warrant for her arrest.

Daniel stood beneath the CCTV monitor and signed the preliminary transfer document.

Owen emerged with Margaret beside him and four armed guards positioned among the guests. Rusk smiled for the cameras.

“My brother has finally accepted the truth,” Owen said.

Daniel looked directly at him. “You are Gabriel’s son. That is true.”

Owen extended his hand for the final signature.

Daniel did not take the pen.

“But blood is not innocence,” he continued. “And inheritance is not ownership.”

Rusk signaled his officers.

At that moment, Elena placed the brown handbag on the floor and unzipped it.

The overhead monitor turned on.

This time the footage did not show Vanessa planting diamonds. It showed Owen entering the monitoring room before the gala, striking the technician, altering the time stamp, and calling Rusk.

Then came the warehouse recording: Owen opening the river gate.

Then Saint Orison: Rusk entering the lower ward through the maintenance hatch and firing the paralytic dart that killed Wren before Isabel staged the second shot.

Isabel had not killed Wren after all. She had claimed responsibility to draw Owen into contact.

The final clip showed Rusk and Owen planning the convent raid and ordering contractors to kill Elena after the archive opened.

Reporters raised phones. Live streams multiplied beyond anyone’s control.

Rusk drew his weapon.

Mara stepped from the crowd and aimed at him. “Put it down.”

He fired first.

The bullet struck the marble beside Elena. Daniel tackled Owen. Margaret threw herself against one of the guards, knocking his weapon away. Guests fled as police loyal to Mara entered through the eastern doors.

Vanessa activated the mansion lockdown from upstairs, sealing every exit except the central foyer.

Rusk grabbed Elena and pressed a pistol beneath her jaw.

“Stop the broadcast,” he shouted.

Elena looked at the monitor. Millions were already watching.

“You still think the camera belongs to you,” she said.

She drove her heel into his knee. Mara fired once, striking his shoulder. Rusk fell, and officers surrounded him.

Owen tore free from Daniel and ran toward the service corridor. Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs and locked the inner gate. He turned toward her with murder in his eyes.

“You began this,” he said.

“No,” Vanessa replied. “Your father did.”

Owen raised a stolen pistol.

Margaret stepped between them.

The gun discharged.
