Chapter 9 - Richard’s Final Move
Richard refused to accept losing control.
When the triplets were six months old, he filed a lawsuit claiming that Emily was preventing the Carter family from maintaining a relationship with the children.
His attorneys described Emily as unstable and Mark as a devoted father who had been manipulated into surrendering his rights.
Richard expected Mark to remain silent.
Instead, Mark testified for Emily.
The courtroom was quiet as he explained the missed calls, the turned-off phone, and the press conference he had attended after learning his children had been born prematurely.
“My wife did not disappear without reason,” he said. “She protected herself and our children after I proved I could not be trusted.”
Richard stared at him with cold fury.
The family attorney asked whether Emily had encouraged Mark to speak against his father.
“No,” Mark replied. “Emily asked me for nothing.”
“Then why are you supporting her?”
Mark looked toward the back of the courtroom, where Emily sat beside Hannah.
“Because the truth should not depend on who has more money.”
The judge dismissed Richard’s petition and issued strict restrictions against further interference.
Outside the courthouse, Richard confronted Mark.
“You destroyed your inheritance.”
Mark remained calm.
“No. I stopped inheriting you.”
He walked away before his father could answer.
Emily had heard the exchange.
Later that evening, she sent Mark a photograph of Noah, Benjamin, and Rose sitting together on a blanket.
It was the first photograph she had sent without being required by the parenting agreement.
Beneath it, she wrote one sentence.
They should know you did the right thing today.
Mark read the message several times.
He did not mistake it for romantic forgiveness.
