Chapter 4 - Three Tiny Fighters

The triplets were born before sunrise.
Two boys and a girl.
Noah, Benjamin, and Rose.
They were small and needed intensive care, but they were alive.
Emily woke several hours later in a recovery room. Her first words were not about pain or fear.
“My babies?”
Hannah leaned close.
“They’re alive. All three of them.”
Emily closed her eyes as tears slipped into her hair.
“Mark?”
Hannah hesitated.
“He hasn’t answered.”
The silence that followed was different from the silences Emily had used throughout her marriage. It contained no excuses, no defenses, and no hope that Mark would suddenly become someone else.
Nurse Lauren helped Emily see the triplets through a video monitor before she was strong enough to visit the NICU.
Lauren had worked in maternity care for twelve years. She had seen frightened fathers arrive barefoot, grandmothers drive through storms, and neighbors sit beside women who had no relatives nearby.
She had also seen partners arrive days later carrying flowers and explanations.
On the second day, Emily’s phone filled with messages from Richard’s assistant.
The messages did not ask whether she or the babies were safe.
They asked when Mark could publicly announce the births. Richard wanted photographs for a company press release about the Carter family legacy.
Emily read the messages twice.
Then she handed the phone to Hannah.
“Take screenshots.”
That afternoon, Mark finally turned on his phone.
There were thirty-eight missed calls.
He called Emily once.
She did not answer.
He called Hannah.
She declined the call.
Then Richard entered Mark’s hotel suite holding a signed investor agreement.
“Congratulations,” his father said. “You just secured your future.”

Mark stared at the notifications on his phone.
For the first time, success looked like a locked door.
