Chapter 1 - The Promise He Made
Seven months earlier, Mark had cried when Emily showed him the first ultrasound image.
At first, they believed they were expecting one baby. Then the doctor pointed toward a second heartbeat.
A moment later, she found a third.
Mark had laughed in shock. He lifted Emily from the examination table and promised her that she would never face the pregnancy alone.
“We’re a team,” he had said. “Whatever happens, I’m there.”
Emily believed him because she wanted to.
They had been married for six years. Mark was ambitious, intelligent, and charming when he chose to be. He worked for Carter Development, a real-estate company founded by his father, Richard Carter.
Mark had spent most of his adult life trying to prove he deserved to inherit the company.
Emily had spent most of their marriage waiting for him to believe that his family deserved the same effort.
At first, Mark attended every appointment. He researched triplet strollers, photographed Emily’s growing stomach, and painted three sections of the nursery in soft shades of blue, green, and yellow.
Then Richard offered him control of the company’s largest project.
The Riverside District development was worth hundreds of millions of dollars. If Mark secured the final investors, Richard promised to make him chief executive.
The meetings became longer. The phone calls came during dinner. Mark started sleeping with his phone beneath his pillow.
When Emily was placed on partial bed rest, Mark hired a housekeeper instead of reducing his schedule.
“You need support,” he told her.
“I need you,” she replied.
Mark kissed her forehead as though affection could replace presence.
“This is temporary. I’m building our future.”
Emily looked toward the unfinished nursery.
