Chapter 5 - The Papers Beside Her Bed

Mark left the conference that morning, but Richard delayed him.
The company needed a press statement. Investors expected a celebration dinner. Reporters were waiting in the lobby.
“You already missed the birth,” Richard said. “Leaving now won’t change that.”
Mark should have walked out.
Instead, he stayed for the press conference.
He told himself Emily was safe because she was in a hospital. He told himself the babies were receiving professional care. He told himself one additional day would not matter.
One day became two.
By the time Mark finally began driving home, Emily had made her decision.
A hospital social worker named Denise had quietly spoken to her after noticing Hannah sleeping in a chair beside the bed.
Denise explained that a private maternal recovery residence offered temporary accommodation to mothers with medically fragile newborns. The location was confidential. Residents received transportation to the NICU, legal support, counseling, and protection from unwanted visitors.
Emily initially refused.
“My home has a nursery,” she said.
Denise looked at her carefully.
“Does it feel like your home?”
Emily thought about the house Mark had purchased in his name. She remembered Richard choosing the neighborhood, approving the renovations, and entering without warning because he possessed his own key.
She remembered how Mark controlled the accounts and called it financial organization.
“No,” Emily admitted.
Hannah contacted an attorney.
By the fourth day, documents waited beside Emily’s bed: a petition for separation, a request for temporary custody, instructions to preserve financial records, and a notice revoking Mark’s access to her private medical information.
Emily signed each page.
She did not feel victorious.
She felt terrified.

But beneath the fear was something she had not felt in years.
Control.
