Chapter 8 - Learning Their Names
Mark’s first supervised visit lasted forty-five minutes.
Noah cried whenever Mark held him incorrectly.
Benjamin slept through almost everything.
Rose opened her eyes and stared at Mark with a seriousness that made him nervous.
A nurse showed him how to support their heads, prepare bottles, check feeding schedules, and recognize signs of distress.
Mark wrote everything down.
During the second visit, Noah settled against his chest.
During the third, Mark changed all three babies without assistance.
During the fourth, Emily watched from behind the observation window.
She did not see the confident businessman who had once answered emails during dinner. She saw a frightened man carefully warming a bottle while Rose gripped his finger.
Mark did not know she was there.
That mattered.
He was not performing for forgiveness.
He was learning because his children needed him.
Over the following months, Mark completed every required class. He rented a modest apartment near the hospital and converted the largest bedroom into a nursery.
He also began therapy.
There, he admitted that he had spent years believing love could be postponed. He had confused financial provision with devotion because Richard had taught him that emotions were inconveniences.
The explanation did not excuse him.
It only showed him what he needed to change.
Emily eventually moved from the confidential residence into a small house Hannah helped her find.
She returned to work remotely as a medical illustrator. She created a stable routine for the triplets and opened a bank account solely in her name.
The marriage ended quietly.
There was no public battle and no dramatic reconciliation.
